That $2500 is not only money well spent, it likely put money in your pocket! By the time you had built some sort of cantilever system to hold 5 tons of load (which means built for 15 tons minimum) you'd have spent way more money than that, spent a few weeks building it, and a couple more tearing everything down. I know y’all talk about the various hootis contraptions, but watching y’all run the rigging out on the ground before using…amazing. Anyone that knows, knows that is a critical step people skip so many times. It is critical for pre-use inspection, untangling, and proper shackle placement. Hats off and much respect Cap’n Crock…much respect.
After college (1973) ,I worked for Brown & Root, I was one of 2 of the first women in the Oil Fields here in South Alabama/North Florida . This operation we just watched reminded of my oil field days. I love construction..I like being outside. That was great to watch . Jim and Lydia I figured you would use a crane to lift them up there. Are you going to put a beam and posts in the center of the span to help support the weight of what you are putting in them? It wouldn't be hard to do. You could drill and anchor the posts to the slab. Nice work Lydia. I hate ladders and heights like that but you made it look so easy. Lydia you probably get tired of hearing this but your gorgeous smile is one reason I keep watching yall. I love your content but your smile brings a smile to my face. My 2 cents, I’d dig and bury 2 40ft containers cover them in black tar, then cover in thick black plastic, then cover it with rock the soil 3ft below the frost line, tunnel to acces secret escape tunnel Also 2 containers weld together pond liner and have a pool With used motor oil have a barrel oil burner and the vent would heat the pool

Congratulations on the lift ! Looks good. Let me take a wild guess as to how you might be getting up to the top containers.. Why not build a 6, or 8-foot wide mezzanine - kinda like an indoor porch that runs the length of the inside container. Then you can build two sets of stairs - one along the walls of the two lower containers. Then you can sit, relax and drink some Iced Tea on your upper deck porch in the shade. :)

I think you all did a great job of laying out the project and not to bad on rigging, with the exception of backing off the shackle pin, thats a definite no no. Great job using a bowline for the tag lines. Overall good work.

lol I have to laugh at Jim’s “ on top of a rickety board “ because just last week at work I was working on top of 3 tiers of scaffolding with 2x8’s on top and still had to use my 6 foot ladder on the top of that and they flax as you move around! My boss walked in took a look at me and said nope I see nothing and walked away! 😂😂

Another quality installation. I see containers stacked all of the time but normally they would have the top contsiner overlapping one of the lower containers on the end that doest have doors. After being a certified National Crane Operator for 17 years, I agree you made the right decision. I ran a hydraulic just like the one you used. I was glad to see you knew crane signals ---- I would show up on job sites and people would have no clue. I didn't understand the container hooks, when a screw pin would have done the job for your purposes, and eliminated another point of failure. I lifted many and never used them.
When you get done with all of this, I'd love to hear your opinion on building homes out of containers and if you think the value proposition makes sense.
I did a design which took in two 40' high roof's with end opening doors, then two 20' with double side opening doors high roof also, put into a rectangle with central courtyard, here the containers are in good secondhand condition about $20Kaud, you are going to spend twice that again to complete the build, doing it all yourself, personally though I still like the idea of building a 45'x 30' shed style structure with a 20' high walls so you can put a mezzanine floor in covering 2/3rds of the bottom floor, giving you about 2250sq ft, obviously you can go bigger for extra space
I bet that was fun. Im like a little kid when it comes to cranes and heavy equipment. I woulda had a blast watching that whole process. Glad yall went that route. I was a little worried you would do what Jim was saying and try to build a hootis to make it work. Thats a lot too much weight to be messing around with... not that I doubt Jim's powers. I would place steel beams every meter on the bottom of the upper containers, and support with vertical steel beams on the lower containers.

After being a certified National Crane Operator for 17 years, I agree you made the right decision. I ran a hydraulic just like the one you used. I was glad to see you knew crane signals ---- I would show up on job sites and people would have no clue. I didn't understand the container hooks, when a screw pin would have done the job for your purposes, and eliminated another point of failure. I lifted many and never used them.

I did a design which took in two 40' high roof's with end opening doors, then two 20' with double side opening doors high roof also, put into a rectangle with central courtyard, here the containers are in good secondhand condition about $20Kaud, you are going to spend twice that again to complete the build, doing it all yourself, personally though I still like the idea of building a 45'x 30' shed style structure with a 20' high walls so you can put a mezzanine floor in covering 2/3rds of the bottom floor, giving you about 2250sq ft, obviously you can go bigger for extra space

I was a little worried you would do what Jim was saying and try to build a hootis to make it work. Thats a lot too much weight to be messing around with... not that I doubt Jim's powers.
