It will never cease to amaze me how that by sheer coincidence of addresses and whatnot just so happening to line up when performing this incredibly specific set of actions, Game Freak basically left a built-in "Catch Any Pokemon" code in the game by total fucking accident. If that isn't the coolest programming blunder of all time, then what is?
since he is breaking the rules, he should change the title. A Mew gotten by a glitch that is not supposed to be there, purposely abusing a glitch, is not legit.

I had a Mew that kept popping up in my hall of fame after doing the masingo glitch on Pokemon Blue so i knew he must have existed within the game. It has bugged me for around 18 years wondering how to catch it. Now i can die in peace. Thank you
This isn’t how you catch him. This is a glitch. You don’t catch mew in game you had to go to real life Pokémon events and they would give you a mew download.
If you already fought the slowpoke guy, you can fight the first swimmer in Mysty's gym. While fighting either of the trainers, if you *growl* at their last pokemon *6 times* , the mew will be level 1. Check the stats of it and see the amount of exp needed for it to level up. Gain less than the exp needed, then BAM. Level 100 Mew before the 2nd Gym.
@@tigertank06 there's a list of specials that correlate to the ids of the pokemon you'll find through this somewhere. Find the ID, get one of your mons Special to that number, then fight a ditto after flying from the trainer but before you trigger the glitch proper, and let that ditto transform.
I got Mew back in 1999 legally on my cartridge. Nintendo came to my local mall and you had to give them your cartdridge and they would give you mew and a pokemon TCG, only for the first 50 people or something like that, it was amazing.
That’s interesting. I was playing this game in ‘99 but I didn’t even know that. Had no idea how to get new until now. And I had 150 Pokémon. I guess I just thought he wasn’t in the game or something.
A friend of mine won a Mew from Nintendo through a Toys R Us promotion. There were sticker sheets and you won if you saw a mew underneath a sticker on the back of the sheet, and he got one. Same story, he had to bring his cartridge to the store and a Nintendo rep added a Mew to his lineup and gave him a Charizard card.

For those that can't get the timing right with the pause menu you need to get up above him and you want to make sure that you press Start AFTER pressing down, not during. It helps if you use the same finger because if you press start too early it won't count it. Also, if using an Advance or newer Game Boy you it really helps to change the resolution to the original.
I used my lvl 18 Magikarp to whittle it downand surprisingly only needed 3 Pokeballs.Oh also if you use growl 6 times, you will get a Mew at lvl 1 that can lvl up to lvl100 instantly.
A helpful tip; hold start when moving down into the space where you are spotted. It took me a few attempts to move down and press start simultaneously before getting spotted and going into combat.
I’m 29 and there was always a rumor that you could catch him around the SS Anne via glitch or something, but I could never do it. Seeing this is like a dream come true. The nostalgia is taking over I must play again!
That was a rumor that turned out to be false, and it wasn't through glitching, it was through trading a Pokemon to your save with cut so you can skip the SS Anne until you had access to Surf and Strength, coming back to the SS Anne, and using surf to find a truck that you normally would have no way of accessing, since the area becomes unavailable after the SS Anne leaves. It was said you would use strength to move the truck and Mew would be under it. Like I said, it was a false rumor and doesn't actually work

This 100000% works! I did less than 5 mins ago! Incredible! 2 decades later I have my mew. Thank u for this vid. 💓 the only difference I found is when I went back over the nugget bridge after starting the glitch. Instead of the menu popping up, a text boxed popped up and said ' oh, stomped under foot' and the mew battle began. The method works perfectly.. only hard part was catching an abra......
Just imagine knowing this trick when you were 9-14 years old. You could have bribed kids at your school and caught a mew for them without letting them know the trick in exchange for Pokémon cards! 😈

You can also battle the first trainer at the gym, his Shelder has the same special stat for Mew. I actually literally just tested to see if you can still catch Mew after blacking out by losing to the Shelder and you can! So technically you can get an infinite amount of Mew since when you black out you can fight the trainer again.
Back in high school the only way to get Mew on any Pokemon game was off this kid who had a Gameshark device for the Gameboy Color. In all seriousness though back in those days there was TONS of bogus stories/methods/rumors going around of how you could catch Mew in either Pokemon Red/Blue or Yellow and NONE of them ever bore any fruit so in the end you were left with no other option than to cheat!!

Truth be told, I'm kind of partial to having illegitimate/hacked pokemon over ones obtained legitimately, especially when I go about crafting them to be perfectly identical to the legitimate pokemon that there is no way to tell the difference. I feel the same way about diamonds too. I think synthetic diamonds grown in a lab are much cooler than natural ones, even if naturals are worth more, but I'm digressing here.
Wow, that’s crazy, just got my analogue pocket and started over my blue version. And this actually worked, it got me thinking, can this be done later in the game. You can avoid the youngster who has slowpoke and still meet Bill and you can avoid the guy in the grass who you need to initiate the glitch. Catching Abra, was a pain.
It can be done later in the game as long as you don’t fight the first trainer and that trainer with the Slowpoke. There’s also a trainer in Cerulean gym with Slowpoke. I firmly believe that this glitch was intended to be in the game from the beginning. It’s not coincidence that Abra is located here and is a crucial part of the glitch. It’s an Easter egg. Not sure how someone stumbled on it.. probably a leak from Nintendo employee
True, not really into the glitch idea. Then again I made sure to beat the elite four first before working on the Pokedex. I can't even capture the legendary anymore but developers really wanted us to stop at 150 at the time. Replaying again for nostalgia sake. Props for footage and how to do it but I think I'll pass. I told myself I had to catch Mew by the time I was 30 when I was a kid as a joke but I actually did it. Crushed through it in 2 nights with open emu and the fast forward button.

Yo, I know you may not believe me, but I actually encountered Mew by COMPLETE accident in Rock Tunnel when I was eight years old. I was near the end of Rock Tunnel when it happened, and had nothing but very high level Pokémon with me so I was unable to catch it. I now will use this method to catch Mew as I have always wanted to. Thank you for this video!
You have to have someone trade you a pokemon with strength and swim .. when you get to the S.S Anne, in the bridge before you board on the ship you use surf and go off to the right. You'll find a small piece of land with a tractor. Use strength infront of it, push it and a battle with Mew will start

Hell yes just caught Mew using this. Some more specific instructions concerning finding and catching Abra before hand would have been nice. Took me bloody hours! You need to have a levelled up (17) Butterfree with sleep powder to catch one. Then the only place I could find Abra was in the little patch of grass early on route 25 (right before the kid with slow poke).
Decided to pick up my Pokémon Red Version and just did this method literally just a few minutes ago and it worked. I was even lucky enough to catch an abra with 1 Pokéball throw lol. Took me 5 Pokeballs to catch Mew as it kept missing and I didn’t do any damage to it to potentially kill it since I only had a lvl 24 Charmeleon. This is my first Mew I ever got since I got this game like 20 years ago. My inner childhood is very happy. Thank you!
You can use this glitch to catch any pokemon in the game. It depends on the special stat of the pokemon you battle in place of Slowpoke. Mew is just the most common because its the one thats unavailable otherwise and its easy to get early game. But the glitch makes it easier to get the trade evolutions or version exclusives if you only have one system. Also if you lower the Slowpokes attack stat while in battle it will lower Mews level if i remember correctly. It will lower it to level one if you do it 6 or 7 times. And since no pokemon in this gen was supposed to be level one, if you level it up with under something like 50xp it will jump to level 100. So you could have a lvl 100 Mew before even getting your second badge. Another glitch. Also if you lose to the trainer you make sure that this glitch can be done over and over because the trainer can be battled again. You need a trainer that will see you from the edge of your screen and those are very limited in the game. I remember only 3 and one is on the water route which makes it a pain. The other one is by lavander town. Oh and if you are going to lose to the trainer, spend all your money first. You lose half of it each time you lose.
Oh there's one to the left of lavender and on the route below lavender. So 4. I believe it's easier to get gengar at these ones because one of the trainers pokemon has a special stat that correlates to gengar if I remember correctly. It's been so long

Downloaded Pokemon Red to try this out, totally works. I wanted to push it further and see what other pokemon you can get.. If you trigger the glitch and fight the trainer AFTER the one in this video, you come across a Lapras. If you do the next trainer, the miner (or hiker maybe) on the bottom, you come across a Gengar! I'm gonna keep capturing these awesome Pokemon :D

Thats how people found Mew in the first place. its based on the last pokemon you fight. I think you can get a level 100 nitoking before brock if im not mistaken.

Damnat I wish I figured this out, back in '98. I had all 151 Pokemon except Mew, tried like 6 hacks that people had brought up on the internet back then. But none of them ever worked. Ended up grabbing him with my Game Genie. I'm glad this hack was leaked. Pretty cool.
Finally. I dont know why but I have tried it once around 2016 and the 'walk down to the trainer + press start before he can attack you' just did not work. Now I tried it again in 2021 and FINALLY it has worked. Thank you!

Heres a great way to get mew and in fact to also break the game a little bit. You pretty much do the same thing you did except instead of defeating a slowpoke if you fight the first trainer in misty's gym who has a shelder, the shelder has the required special attack to summon mew during the glitch. And as an added bonus if you growl at the shelder 6 times it sets what level the pokemon will appear as. for each growl itll reduce the level of the pokemon. So by growling 6 times itll set the mew as level 1. Since 1st gen does not normally register pokemon as level 1, when you catch the mew and then this is critical! DO NOT get the exact amount of experience it would take to level up, instead get just enough experience to where it would not level up and the game will automatically boost your mew to level 100.
Well that was a glitch made by the guys who made the gen 1 games, nobody knew until they told us some years ago for the 10th aniversary acording to a guy.
Pff, a lot of people knew, they just didn't make a youtube video on it. I learned about the ditto glitch (though not mew in particular), back in 2002 or something. What happened is they tried to pause the game before a trainer battle to see if it was possible. Then when they managed to pause it, they tried to fly away, and they managed to do so. After learning that was possible, they probably started playing normally again and randomly encountered pokemon not native to that region at all. Then they figured out it was a glitch. These things take time to discover, but most likely the first time it was just by accident.
After you teleport the first time, go into the gym and battle the first trainer there on the right. Kill his first pokemon and on his shellder (his second pokemon) use growl 6 times. This is important. After you knock out his pokemon (after using growl six times) you can heal your pokemon and go encounter Mew. It will be level 1. This is amazing because the game isnt made to have level 1's in it. So after you catch it, look at its stats and see its experience needed to level up. Go into a battle with mew in the first slot then withdraw him for someone else and MAKE SURE you get less exp than Mew needs to level up. This will make him level 100 automatically BUT ONLY IF YOU GIVE HIM LESS EXP THAN HE NEEDS.
Pro tips... You can use an escape rope instead of teleporting with abra If you blackout vs the slowpoke you can repeat the glitch and get two mews or more If you use growl 6 times against the slowpoke the mew you encounter will be lvl 1 but immediately level up to lvl 100 as soon as it gains any xp
Escape rope doesn’t work, also if you black out vs the slowpoke then mew will not appear, you’ll trigger the JR trainer battle “I saw your feat from the grass” once you try to cross nugget bridge.
I wish stuff like this was actually possible to discover by accident, like if I’d accidentally caught a mew somewhere I knew I shouldn’t have and couldn’t replicate it again or tell anyone how

Just make sure you have a space in your party for the mew. Otherwise, the game will freeze if you try to withdraw a lvl 1 mew from the PC.

You can also battle the first trainer at the gym, his Shelder has the same special stat for Mew.
I actually literally just tested to see if you can still catch Mew after blacking out by losing to the Shelder and you can! So technically you can get an infinite amount of Mew since when you black out you can fight the trainer again.

After almost 30 years, I can finally get a mew in pokemon red and blue.
Back in high school the only way to get Mew on any Pokemon game was off this kid who had a Gameshark device for the Gameboy Color.
In all seriousness though back in those days there was TONS of bogus stories/methods/rumors going around of how you could catch Mew in either Pokemon Red/Blue or Yellow and NONE of them ever bore any fruit so in the end you were left with no other option than to cheat!!

Truth be told, I'm kind of partial to having illegitimate/hacked pokemon over ones obtained legitimately, especially when I go about crafting them to be perfectly identical to the legitimate pokemon that there is no way to tell the difference. I feel the same way about diamonds too. I think synthetic diamonds grown in a lab are much cooler than natural ones, even if naturals are worth more, but I'm digressing here.

Wow, that’s crazy, just got my analogue pocket and started over my blue version. And this actually worked, it got me thinking, can this be done later in the game. You can avoid the youngster who has slowpoke and still meet Bill and you can avoid the guy in the grass who you need to initiate the glitch. Catching Abra, was a pain.
It can be done later in the game as long as you don’t fight the first trainer and that trainer with the Slowpoke. There’s also a trainer in Cerulean gym with Slowpoke.
I firmly believe that this glitch was intended to be in the game from the beginning. It’s not coincidence that Abra is located here and is a crucial part of the glitch. It’s an Easter egg. Not sure how someone stumbled on it.. probably a leak from Nintendo employee
I really hope they don't remove this when they port these games to the 3DS next year.

This may be a glitch, but it's currently one of the only known ways to get a Mew. Those events have been over for years.

Yo, I know you may not believe me, but I actually encountered Mew by COMPLETE accident in Rock Tunnel when I was eight years old. I was near the end of Rock Tunnel when it happened, and had nothing but very high level Pokémon with me so I was unable to catch it. I now will use this method to catch Mew as I have always wanted to. Thank you for this video!

Actually this glitch is true....
You have to have someone trade you a pokemon with strength and swim .. when you get to the S.S Anne, in the bridge before you board on the ship you use surf and go off to the right. You'll find a small piece of land with a tractor. Use strength infront of it, push it and a battle with Mew will start

I lived in the countryside at that time in the middle of nowhere lol. Not magazine stores for a while so never saw it.
Hell yes just caught Mew using this. Some more specific instructions concerning finding and catching Abra before hand would have been nice. Took me bloody hours! You need to have a levelled up (17) Butterfree with sleep powder to catch one. Then the only place I could find Abra was in the little patch of grass early on route 25 (right before the kid with slow poke).

Decided to pick up my Pokémon Red Version and just did this method literally just a few minutes ago and it worked. I was even lucky enough to catch an abra with 1 Pokéball throw lol. Took me 5 Pokeballs to catch Mew as it kept missing and I didn’t do any damage to it to potentially kill it since I only had a lvl 24 Charmeleon.

You can use this glitch to catch any pokemon in the game. It depends on the special stat of the pokemon you battle in place of Slowpoke. Mew is just the most common because its the one thats unavailable otherwise and its easy to get early game. But the glitch makes it easier to get the trade evolutions or version exclusives if you only have one system. Also if you lower the Slowpokes attack stat while in battle it will lower Mews level if i remember correctly. It will lower it to level one if you do it 6 or 7 times. And since no pokemon in this gen was supposed to be level one, if you level it up with under something like 50xp it will jump to level 100. So you could have a lvl 100 Mew before even getting your second badge. Another glitch. Also if you lose to the trainer you make sure that this glitch can be done over and over because the trainer can be battled again. You need a trainer that will see you from the edge of your screen and those are very limited in the game. I remember only 3 and one is on the water route which makes it a pain. The other one is by lavander town. Oh and if you are going to lose to the trainer, spend all your money first. You lose half of it each time you lose.
Oh there's one to the left of lavender and on the route below lavender. So 4. I believe it's easier to get gengar at these ones because one of the trainers pokemon has a special stat that correlates to gengar if I remember correctly. It's been so long

Downloaded Pokemon Red to try this out, totally works. I wanted to push it further and see what other pokemon you can get.. If you trigger the glitch and fight the trainer AFTER the one in this video, you come across a Lapras. If you do the next trainer, the miner (or hiker maybe) on the bottom, you come across a Gengar! I'm gonna keep capturing these awesome Pokemon :D

Damnat I wish I figured this out, back in '98. I had all 151 Pokemon except Mew, tried like 6 hacks that people had brought up on the internet back then. But none of them ever worked. Ended up grabbing him with my Game Genie. I'm glad this hack was leaked. Pretty cool.

Heres a great way to get mew and in fact to also break the game a little bit. You pretty much do the same thing you did except instead of defeating a slowpoke if you fight the first trainer in misty's gym who has a shelder, the shelder has the required special attack to summon mew during the glitch. And as an added bonus if you growl at the shelder 6 times it sets what level the pokemon will appear as. for each growl itll reduce the level of the pokemon. So by growling 6 times itll set the mew as level 1. Since 1st gen does not normally register pokemon as level 1, when you catch the mew and then this is critical! DO NOT get the exact amount of experience it would take to level up, instead get just enough experience to where it would not level up and the game will automatically boost your mew to level 100.

Well that was a glitch made by the guys who made the gen 1 games, nobody knew until they told us some years ago for the 10th aniversary acording to a guy.
Pff, a lot of people knew, they just didn't make a youtube video on it. I learned about the ditto glitch (though not mew in particular), back in 2002 or something. What happened is they tried to pause the game before a trainer battle to see if it was possible. Then when they managed to pause it, they tried to fly away, and they managed to do so. After learning that was possible, they probably started playing normally again and randomly encountered pokemon not native to that region at all. Then they figured out it was a glitch.
These things take time to discover, but most likely the first time it was just by accident.

You can also get Nidoqueen, Lapras & Cubone using thia glitch by fighting other trainers then teleporting
After you teleport the first time, go into the gym and battle the first trainer there on the right. Kill his first pokemon and on his shellder (his second pokemon) use growl 6 times. This is important. After you knock out his pokemon (after using growl six times) you can heal your pokemon and go encounter Mew. It will be level 1. This is amazing because the game isnt made to have level 1's in it. So after you catch it, look at its stats and see its experience needed to level up. Go into a battle with mew in the first slot then withdraw him for someone else and MAKE SURE you get less exp than Mew needs to level up. This will make him level 100 automatically BUT ONLY IF YOU GIVE HIM LESS EXP THAN HE NEEDS.
I can assure you that it will work.

You can use an escape rope instead of teleporting with abra
If you blackout vs the slowpoke you can repeat the glitch and get two mews or more
If you use growl 6 times against the slowpoke the mew you encounter will be lvl 1 but immediately level up to lvl 100 as soon as it gains any xp

Escape rope doesn’t work, also if you black out vs the slowpoke then mew will not appear, you’ll trigger the JR trainer battle “I saw your feat from the grass” once you try to cross nugget bridge.
I wish stuff like this was actually possible to discover by accident, like if I’d accidentally caught a mew somewhere I knew I shouldn’t have and couldn’t replicate it again or tell anyone how
