Depending on your humidity and rainfall if you wait for the rainy season you can also just stick them straight in the ground after letting them sit in a glass of water for an hour or two to perk up. Remove only the last two or three sets of leaves on the stem. This way they get a better start as all the leaves remain intact and side branching will be easier for it, this way you don't get a skinny top cutting that is likely to wilt in the heat, even i the shade . If you want a clump do a few close together or you can also stick in a pot and put in the shade. If your's is a dry climate take the cuttings remove the same only very lower leaves then drop the entire cutting in a bucket of water. Let it soak for a few hours then stick them in a pot, water well and cover in a plastic bag, old large zip lock bags work well, or a humid green-house. These bags you can wash and recycle over and over no need to throw away. "Coleus" and a few other very easy things to root work the same. Try and always avoid taking cuttings in dry hot weather, the plants will be stressed already and so will your cuttings be. Rooting powders etc are not needed and in fact can cause rotting problems with these soft stem cuttings. If in a big hurry add a couple of teaspoons of seaweed emulsion to the soaking water this has natural rooting and growth hormones in it. Not only will your cutting root but it will start growing at the same time. Just make sure it's the right Kelp in the sea-weed extraction, not all kelp has the same properties, that from Tasmania Australia and Southern Africa is the stuff, the rest are best just for fertiliser. Watching this another little tip comes to mind, find yourself a sharp knife, lol. Sharper the better. Victorinox does very handy florists pen knives, and cutting or grafting knives (make stunning presents) simple small palm of the hand one blade pen-knives in bright lively colours that can slip safely into your pocket, even the tightest jeans, curved or straight blade up to you. The reason sharp blades are of the utmost importance is to get the cleanest cut possible, razor blade sharp in fact. This counts when you remove the lower leaves as well, quicker to root and avoids rot at the cut. Jagged, rough, bruised edges will always die back before rooting starts, rather than just sealing over with new cells as with a clean cut, this dead tissue can rot and your whole cutting could die or be set back. Scissors, secateurs etc crush before they cut, same problem with these very soft stem cuttings, though obviously extreme sharp ones will be better than nothing. If you are handy with a scalpel these also work very well just make sure it has a safety cap of sorts.

I received a cutting about 10 inches 2 weeks ago. I cut the cutting in half and removed the leaves leaving about 2 leaves on top. I cut the 2 leaves in halves. I planted directly in soil. Left in the window sill with bright indirect sunlight. Temp in the house is about 70 degrees F. The soil is moist at all times. 2 weeks later, both stalk look so droopy and slightly wrinkly, like they are going to die . There is no sign of new growth but the tiny little leaves that I didn’t remove don’t look like they’re dried up yet. Is this normal ? Does it take more than 2 weeks to see progress ?

I stick them in water before I put them in the ground, never in the ground as the plant goes into greater shock in my opinion. How did they fair?

    • @BirdofParadise

So I haven't grown it from seed before, but I wouldn't be surprised if the new leaves are green. I've noticed new foliage tends to have a different hue with most plants
