I was there too. I live in Oklahoma but my dad lived in Independence just about 2.5 miles away from the stadium. I was visiting- we were supposed to go see my step grandparents. But my stepmom got stuck at work so we went to the game. Had no idea Bo was going to be playing. If not for that I’d have never thought about the game again. But now I’ll never forget.
What is remarkable to me is the people that have been told so many times what a great baseball player he was when he was average or below average at best. To put in perspective he only had a BA once in his career above the team average. Strikes out once out of every 2.75 AB's terrible defensive player. But hey he was fast (but did not steal many bases) he was powerful look how he broke a bat over his head & knee. But they ignore he struck out those times.
I was fortunate enough to watch him live in both sports. I don't remember an athlete who garnered this much attention in both sports, and did so deservingly. He and Walter Payton were the two most gifted football player of all time, and Bo just fooled around and happened to be a HOF caliber MLB player. Simply amazing. I'd be willing to bet that he would have been competitive in the Olympics. The hardest part would be choosing an event....

Never had a 1,000 yards in a season rushing (Ranks 2800 all time in the NFL). Could not block or catch passes. Had a hard time learning the playbook (Per John Madden) Bo is one of the most over rated athletes ever. Could care less about potential. You need to look at his actual accomplishments. Only thing he ever led the league in was K's.

We used to have the same rule about 1980 Georgia & Herschel Walker in Bill Walsh College Football. If the offensive player read the LBs correctly it was impossible to stop the option play out of the power I formation when Herschel was at tailback.

WT Hendrix I saw him play in California against the Angels when he was on the White Sox. Two things I took away from that game: I saw him throw the ball from left field completely across the outfield to the right fielder, flat footed. A drunk Raiders fan came down to the left field wall to give him shit about not playing for the Raiders (this was after his hip injury). Bo's next at bat he crushed a home run. The entire left field crowd let the drunk have it for pissing Bo off.
Saw him playing for Birmingham in Charlotte. Minor league game, around 1986... fastest player I've ever seen from batters box to first base. Remarkably gifted athlete. I'm glad I got to see him play.

I was a soldier stationed at Ft Riley, KS in the mid-80s. Took my two young daughters to Royals stadium one evening just by chance. God smiled on me that day, as Nolan Ryan was pitching. Bo hit a home run off him, very early in the game. I think it might have been one of Nolan's shortest outings ever!
You know the best part about this hit is Bo tried to beat the play at first. He was a competitor. There isn’t a professional baseball player, playing today, who would attempt to beat the play at first.
In the late 70's and 80's there was a kid named Miguel Dilone from the Pirates (had an awsome MVP type year with Cleveland in 1980). Dilone was the fastest I had seen until I saw Bo. And they were not toothpick bodies at all! Believe me, I saw Tim Raines, Rickey Henderson, Ron LeFlore, Herb Washington, Omar Moreno, Juan Samuel, Vince Coleman, Luis Polonia, Deion Sanders, Ichiro Suzuki and today's Billy Hamilton... and to me, Bo and Dilone are hands down the two fastest players in MLB history PERIOD! I also heard Mantle at his prime was really fast!
I read in the comments about Bo beating out grounders to 2nd base! I personally saw him do that a few times. It shows the raw speed that a player possesses. I've seen Ichiro, Mookie Wilson, Vince Coleman, Juan Samuel and a few other do it a few times. I even witnessed a couple of them steal a base on a clean pitch out. However, my lasting impression is that of Miguel Dilone hitting a Bunt double without a bad throw by the defense! If memory serves me right, it was against the Yankees when Dilone bunted toward no men land between the pitcher, short stop and third baseman...when the pitcher picked the ball he turned and fired to first, Dilone had already made a commitment turn to second base and was on his way, the first baseman caught the throw and quickly flipped to the second baseman as Dilone slid safely under the tag! Absolutely amazing! I have heard of a couple of players do it but I had the privilege to see Dilone do it in an actual game without any error throws by the defense! Of the two, I think Bo was a bit faster and Dilone had better base running instincts.
I don't remember Dilone and LeFlore, but I do remember Polonia with the A's. I don't remember him being very fast, fast enough to be mentioned with the other speedsters on your list.
Saw Royals at Spring Training at Boardwalk & Baseball outside Orlando, my son was 1 or 2. 1991? Bo's in RF, fly ball hit to right he misplays it, it bounces off his shoulder, ball rolls to the wall, he chases it down, then throws a seed to 2B. The guy was out by 10'. We were sitting in the front row along the 1B line. Bo hits a freaking rocket at the second-baseman, who barely gets his glove up to save his life. He knocks down the ball, fires it to 1B. Bo was already decelerating by the time the ball was caught by first-baseman. Unreal, right? Just like this video. In fact, it was exactly like this video. Except for one detail, ever been to a horse race? When Bo ran to first we could feel, through the ground and concrete stands, his foot strikes as he ran by. Like a race horse. It was surreal.

Bo ran a verified 4.12 at the NFL combine in New Orleans in 1986 but the NFL didn't keep such records at that time. What we do know is that he ran an electronically timed 6.18 in the 60 yard dash at an official NCAA sanctioned indoor track meet while on the track team at Auburn. I was at this game, sitting behind home plate, and that foul ball he hit down the left field line... it actually went over the concession stand that you see just briefly when the camera pans left. He actually hit it out of the park, that's how far that ball went, but it was foul. *Bo* was The Man!

I got to see almost all of his home games when he played at Auburn University! Those were great times with my grandfather. My grandmother would make fried chicken and make a poundcake for us we would have potato chips and Coca-Cola to drink! Great memories! Definitely the greatest athlete of all time!
I was living in Europe at this time and my roommate, a nice guy from Liverpool, England, asked me who Bo Jackson was (there was limited NFL and MLB coverage in the UK back then) and I answered "Bo Jackson is a miracle." I really did!
This man was the reason I started watching sports. I watched every game he played LA Raiders KC Royals. No one before or since Bo wanted to win / conquer with the passion he had. He was THE force to be reckoned with whether he had to jump over you, plow through a wall of determined men, pulverize the many who sought to stop him, he would not be stopped, intimidated, or swayed from his goal. I watched him pitch for the Phillies in his prime. When he was "on", which was often, he was all but unhittable. Saw him strike out the side many a time.....
I remember watching this first at bat, the powerful swings into foul play, the anxiety on his movements at the plate, the overall expectations of his 1st at bat. Then finally, the ball into play with a little hopper to 2nd base and what seemed to be an easy out, turned out to be the best sign of what Major League got us into with Bo Jackson, for the next few years. Bo Jackson and Michael Jordan are still two of the best athletes I've ever seen. And they played during the same era. The combination of athleticism, skill and hand-eye coordination was off the charts. I'm a bit too young to have watched Jim Brown in his hey day nor was I able to experience Jim Thorpe's amazing athletic career -- but Jordan and Jackson are certainly up there with the best.
Mickey Mantle was 2nd most powerful slugger all time. Mickey Mantle was fastest runner in Major League history. Look it up in "Baseball's Ultimate Power" by Bill Jenkinson. Foxx was rated 2nd because he had more 450 foot plus homers but Mickey's 10 longest totaled more feet than Foxx's 10 longest. I had Mantle as greatest athlete of all time BEFORE I saw this book. Combo of hitting, running, and throwing, Mantle was rated 1st, Bo 2nd, Willie Mays 3rd. Foxx 4th. Lots of great stuff in this book.
If Kauffman Stadium was more of a hitters' ball park, his numbers would have been crazy. Despite not having HoF numbers in football or baseball, I wish both halls would put him in as an honorary member to commemorate his performances so the younger generations know his greatness. Kids today should know he was an athlete who could outperform in any era.

For his FIRST major league hit! Think about that- how many right handers beat out a grounder to second? Apparently that was the 2nd fastest time ever recorded by a right handed batter running to 1st base. It was 3.6 s.
What's equally as impressive as his athletic ability is his humility. A true professional.

WT Hendrix I saw him play in California against the Angels when he was on the White Sox. Two things I took away from that game: I saw him throw the ball from left field completely across the outfield to the right fielder, flat footed. A drunk Raiders fan came down to the left field wall to give him shit about not playing for the Raiders (this was after his hip injury). Bo's next at bat he crushed a home run. The entire left field crowd let the drunk have it for pissing Bo off.

It's sad that some people under 30 don't even know who Bo Jackson is. He had a very brief career but there was no one more entertaining than Bo in 1989. I was a soldier stationed at Ft Riley, KS in the mid-80s. Took my two young daughters to Royals stadium one evening just by chance. God smiled on me that day, as Nolan Ryan was pitching. Bo hit a home run off him, very early in the game. I think it might have been one of Nolan's shortest outings ever!
His short stint with the Raiders was amazing, it was so disappointing when he got injured, it ended everything

In the late 70's and 80's there was a kid named Miguel Dilone from the Pirates (had an awsome MVP type year with Cleveland in 1980). Dilone was the fastest I had seen until I saw Bo. And they were not toothpick bodies at all! Believe me, I saw Tim Raines, Rickey Henderson, Ron LeFlore, Herb Washington, Omar Moreno, Juan Samuel, Vince Coleman, Luis Polonia, Deion Sanders, Ichiro Suzuki and today's Billy Hamilton... and to me, Bo and Dilone are hands down the two fastest players in MLB history PERIOD! I also heard Mantle at his prime was really fast!
I read in the comments about Bo beating out grounders to 2nd base! I personally saw him do that a few times. It shows the raw speed that a player possesses. I've seen Ichiro, Mookie Wilson, Vince Coleman, Juan Samuel and a few other do it a few times.
I even witnessed a couple of them steal a base on a clean pitch out. However, my lasting impression is that of Miguel Dilone hitting a Bunt double without a bad throw by the defense! If memory serves me right, it was against the Yankees when Dilone bunted toward no men land between the pitcher, short stop and third baseman...when the pitcher picked the ball he turned and fired to first, Dilone had already made a commitment turn to second base and was on his way, the first baseman caught the throw and quickly flipped to the second baseman as Dilone slid safely under the tag! Absolutely amazing! I have heard of a couple of players do it but I had the privilege to see Dilone do it in an actual game without any error throws by the defense!
Of the two, I think Bo was a bit faster and Dilone had better base running instincts.
I don't remember Dilone and LeFlore, but I do remember Polonia with the A's. I don't remember him being very fast, fast enough to be mentioned with the other speedsters on your list.

Bo's in RF, fly ball hit to right he misplays it, it bounces off his shoulder, ball rolls to the wall, he chases it down, then throws a seed to 2B. The guy was out by 10'.
We were sitting in the front row along the 1B line. Bo hits a freaking rocket at the second-baseman, who barely gets his glove up to save his life. He knocks down the ball, fires it to 1B. Bo was already decelerating by the time the ball was caught by first-baseman. Unreal, right? Just like this video. In fact, it was exactly like this video. Except for one detail, ever been to a horse race? When Bo ran to first we could feel, through the ground and concrete stands, his foot strikes as he ran by. Like a race horse. It was surreal.

Records of times at NFL combines only became "official" beginning in 2006. They only started using "hand initiated" electronic timing at Indy in 1999. Bo ran a verified 4.12 at the NFL combine in New Orleans in 1986 but the NFL didn't keep such records at that time.
What we do know is that he ran an electronically timed 6.18 in the 60 yard dash at an official NCAA sanctioned indoor track meet while on the track team at Auburn. He was fast enough to qualify for the National meet in the 60 in both 1983 and 1984.

@Charlie Jordan well it was and it isn't... see at the time when he ran his 40 the NFL combine used regular stop watches now they use a laser beam stop watch so the split millisecond the beam is broken the time stops which is a lot more accurate than a dude with a stop watch so Bo's 40 at that time was official but it wouldn't be official today

I was at this game, sitting behind home plate, and that foul ball he hit down the left field line... it actually went over the concession stand that you see just briefly when the camera pans left. He actually hit it out of the park, that's how far that ball went, but it was foul. *Bo* was The Man!

I got to see almost all of his home games when he played at Auburn University! Those were great times with my grandfather. My grandmother would make fried chicken and make a poundcake for us we would have potato chips and Coca-Cola to drink! Great memories! Definitely the greatest athlete of all time!

This man was the reason I started watching sports. I watched every game he played LA Raiders KC Royals. No one before or since Bo wanted to win / conquer with the passion he had. He was THE force to be reckoned with whether he had to jump over you, plow through a wall of determined men, pulverize the many who sought to stop him, he would not be stopped, intimidated, or swayed from his goal. I watched him pitch for the Phillies in his prime. When he was "on", which was often, he was all but unhittable. Saw him strike out the side many a time.....
I remember watching this first at bat, the powerful swings into foul play, the anxiety on his movements at the plate, the overall expectations of his 1st at bat.
Then finally, the ball into play with a little hopper to 2nd base and what seemed to be an easy out, turned out to be the best sign of what Major League got us into with Bo Jackson, for the next few years.
What an amazing moment, to start many, many, many more, amazing moments.

Bo Jackson and Michael Jordan are still two of the best athletes I've ever seen. And they played during the same era. The combination of athleticism, skill and hand-eye coordination was off the charts. I'm a bit too young to have watched Jim Brown in his hey day nor was I able to experience Jim Thorpe's amazing athletic career -- but Jordan and Jackson are certainly up there with the best.

Mickey Mantle was 2nd most powerful slugger all time. Mickey Mantle was fastest runner in Major League history. Look it up in "Baseball's Ultimate Power" by Bill Jenkinson. Foxx was rated 2nd because he had more 450 foot plus homers but Mickey's 10 longest totaled more feet than Foxx's 10 longest. I had Mantle as greatest athlete of all time BEFORE I saw this book. Combo of hitting, running, and throwing, Mantle was rated 1st, Bo 2nd, Willie Mays 3rd. Foxx 4th. Lots of great stuff in this book.

If Kauffman Stadium was more of a hitters' ball park, his numbers would have been crazy. Despite not having HoF numbers in football or baseball, I wish both halls would put him in as an honorary member to commemorate his performances so the younger generations know his greatness. Kids today should know he was an athlete who could outperform in any era.

For his FIRST major league hit! Think about that- how many right handers beat out a grounder to second?
