    A stage scene from Gregory Doran's 2012 production of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, starring Ray Fearon and Paterson Joseph.
    Act 3 Scene 2
    Mark Antony:
    Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;
    I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.
    The evil that men do lives after them;
    The good is oft interred with their bones;
    So let it be with Caesar.

    I've seen Marc Antony angry, sad, sarcastic and furious. But I've never seen a Marc Anthony so clearly in despair, still mourning the murder of his friend. "He was my friend, faithful and just to me". That line never carried so much emotion as it was said by this man. Because of this random 4 minute video that popped up in my recommendations I'll have to watch the whole thing. I'm hooked...

      I come back to watch this every so often, and I am struck by that line every single time. THAT is how it should always be performed. This performance was stellar.

      @Holden Mcgroine To me, this is the most emotional version I have seen. He certainly was choked up. I love it. I like Brando and Heston and others I can't remember, but this is my favorite now. I like emotional art above all so no surprise.

      I teach Shakespeare at the University level and I agree. This is the best production of this play ever done on film, by far. And since I teach at an HBCU, it's even better!

      @williammartin2593 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@karlinguk In movies I liked Brando and Heston and others I can't remember, but this is now my favorite. There are so many nuances to this speech. When one fine actor stresses something it seems so natural. When another fine actor stresses something else, or some other emotion, it too seems natural. Was Shakespeare human? Discuss.

    Wicked interpretation. I love the crowds reaction. They agreed with Brutus’s mentions but slowly grew completely silent when they realised the venom in its repetition, which comes across as sarcastic but carries that despair.

    A fine (all to brief a glimpse) interpretation. Antony's speech superb. Diction and phrasing doing justice to the poetry of Shakespeare. Even the crowd playing the scene to the max.
    And to Mr. Singleton, didn't the bard himself write in this play. " How many ages hence shall this our lofty scene be acted oe'r, in states unborn and accents yet unknown?"

    I have been going to The RSC at Stratford for over thirty years. I have seen many productions of Julius Caesar there, and elsewhere. This is my favourite interpretation by far. Setting it in a 'modern' African country works brilliantly and highlights the play's relevance in today's world. Ray Fearon's speech as Anthony is a 'tour de force' of acting - perfect! Credit also to Paterson Joseph as Brutus, and Cyril Nr as Cassius. You need to see the whole play to appreciate it's brilliance.

    • @alexanderziemecki2892
      @alexanderziemecki2892 ปีที่แล้ว

      For some reason, the speech just sounds more natural in an African cadence than a regular English voice. Like - no one still talks like that in the English countries. But in Africa, it makes sense. They still speak formally and, I guess, without contractions. So it's closer to what Shakespeare would have wrote?

  • @robbyschwartz

      MARK ANTONY
      Eros, thou yet behold'st me?
      EROS
      Ay, noble lord.
      MARK ANTONY
      Sometimes we see a cloud that's dragonish;
      A vapour sometime like a bear or lion,
      A tower'd citadel, a pendent rock,
      A forked mountain, or blue promontory
      With trees upon't, that nod unto the world,
      And mock our eyes with air: thou hast seen
      these signs;
      They are black vesper's pageants.
      EROS
      Ay, my lord,
      MARK ANTONY
      That which is now a horse, even with a thought
      The rack dislimns, and makes it indistinct,
      As water is in water.
      EROS
      It does, my lord.

    Just had the opportunity to watch this production on Amazon and I was enthralled. It's been a long time since a production of this play has brought tears to my eyes but Ray Fearon's soliloquy with Cesar dead on the escalator ripped my heart out. And the funeral oration was heart rending, as well. What an outstanding job this company delivered. I'm not typically a fan of alternate settings/time periods for Shakespeare's plays, but this was so extraordinarily well done that I have nothing but praise.

    I like the effect of the accent on the sound of the text and the third world emotional sharpness and obviousness of an oral culture (Walter Ong). And yet the hypertext of the play, as is always the case with these things, begins to obscure Shakespeare himself. In taking Shakespeare out of his time into our's, we left little bits of the man from Stratford in the text, unexposed to a critical, thoughtful sun. Nevertheless, seems better than other such higher-text projects.

    Just saw a clip with someone else performing it with RSC. They were good, but it reminded me that I still haven't seen anything as good as this - and I'm not sure if I ever will in my lifetime... 😅
    So many people play this with emotion and passion, but this actor plays the audience on the stage and off the stage like an instrument! His speech is almost musical but still authentic... It doesn't just make me feel for him, It makes me want to take action.
    So so good!!

    DThis is fantastic! Having recently read the description of this event by Appian... this feels authetic. I feel the sadness of having lost a grea friend, and the sarcasm of saying Brutus is an honourable man. However, I stil feel the Brando version is the closest to not only the original Shakespeare but alos the actual history.
