So many great tips! I’m an expanded functions assistant right now and I usually make it a point to explain every step of what I’m doing as I’m doing it. Also just offering simple gestures of kindness. I had a fairly rude new patient who was very difficult while getting her full-mouth x-rays, she was very irritated at how many images I had to take. An alarm went off on her phone and she said it was her reminder to take her medicine. I offered her some water to take her medicine so that she wouldn’t need to wait until after her appointment and she completely changed her attitude after that. She even said “oh well that was really nice of you”. Weird how something so simple and basic could change her attitude towards us.

Man, you are an angel. I was much nicer when I was younger. But these days, I don’t like around anyone who tries to feast off of my energy. Likewise, whenever I’m going to get service of any kind, I go the extra mile and just try to shrug off minor annoyances.
Well, I’m just hoping people like you get nice vacations whenever you want them so you can continue being as super as you are. People like me appreciate you. 👍🏻

I have always been nervous of the dentist my sister always used to come into the examination room with me because I was so nervous. I'm 21 now I do a little bit better now because i had braces when I was 17 and I always say to myself it's never going to be as uncomfortable as when they used to tighten the wires every time I went.

Omg. I always fear that ill come across as rude when I ask too many questions, or if i question the necessity of a procedure.
I hope all dentists understand that some of us patients dont know much about our teeth and what goes on in our mouths.
As someone with permanent vision problems and mild tinnitus in my left ear, im always afraid that ill get ANOTHER chronic issue. This has left me extremely paranoid about my health.
Unfortunately, even taking medicine with potential serious rare side-effects that will help me feel better, freaks me out.
Or doing anything that will improve my health, like getting cavities filled.
And since dentistry is a bit on the invasive side, I always fear something wrong might happen. Like an accidental movement from the dentist that may cause them to chip or damage my healthy teeth while working on a cavity. Or maybe my tongue movement might cause the dentists hand to slip.
Or the dentist accidently working on the wrong tooth.
Or anything else that might go wrong and cause me permanent damage.
Also, my mom had a dentist that offered her a procedure that my mom agreed to do, but what they didnt mention to her was that they would have to shave down one of her healthy tooth.
    Something like that would freak.me.out.
The thing is that i wouldnt even get mad at the dentist.
I just would get EXTREMELY depressed.
And i haaaaate that feeling. My health really gets to me.
Im glad you all are understanding of the dental fears some of us have, but sometimes i fear that ill get a dentist who will take things personally because at the end of the day, dentists/hygenists are people. And, well, people come in all different shapes and personalities.

@@abenaadubea279 it’s gotten a lot easier throughout the last few months since I’ve written this! It is very nerve wracking at first being a new grad because you’re by yourself essentially with a patient, but you learn really fast and will find your own pace / ways of explaining things and connecting with patients. I feel like for me there were people I’d work with who it felt like were micromanaging me but in the long run I think they were just trying to help. Now that I’ve been there a few months it’s mostly disappeared and I’m more comfortable. You will probably have times at first that you feel nervous and unconfident but the best advice given to me was fake it til you make it. The patient will never know you were unconfident if you can fake it.

Dental assistant here. I work full time with a pediatric dentist and every now and then we get difficult parents. Most of the time we explain what their children are there for and after some time the parents feel reassured. We're able to help their kids and everything is normal but every now and then we get parents that are just plain rude (it's their way or no way) even though the doctor has explained everything to them. It's times like these that inside voice me is like, "F this I'm going to get the manager" The Dr. I work with already knows my serious face do when I leave the room so does she 🤣🤣. I enjoy my career let me clarify this, but I'm also about respect so I'd rather get the manager and keep my job than the other way around period

      Go to ur dentist now.

    • @itsHangiee
      @itsHangiee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi! I'm currently a dental assistant student, but have you tried using a fluoride toothpaste? Toothpaste containing flouride will help avoid cavities because it has minerals that will strengthen your tooth and prevent bacteria from growing, therefore causing decay. You may also use a flouridated mouth rinse to flush out the bacteria as well as remineralizing the teeth. Flossing and brushing your teeth in between meals will also limit the growth of bacteria growing. If you can't, drinking water with flouride minerals will also help clean it out as well. These are some suggestions that may help you avoid it, but if sensitivity continues to persist, I suggest seeing your dentist! They will most likely place a filling to prevent sensitivity and decay; and possibly a root canal treatment. Hope this helps! :)

@@retrotoon7946 that’s insane. I’ve also had a lot of dental trauma from my childhood, but probably not as dramatic. My dentist when I was little was not very kid friendly or gentle. The shot always hurt and afterwards, it seemed like my entire mouth was numb except for the tooth he was working on. I was crying from pain, but he kept going. At that point, I wasn’t motivated to brush my teeth every day because of the trauma that I had, so you can imagine how many cavities I needed filled.
Now, i go to a much better dentist and my trauma is still there, but I’m getting better about it. I’ve actually found that the “pillow” for the teeth is actually helpful, bc it lets me relax my jaw a bit more and keeps me from having a gag reflex. But of course, it’s also because I chose to have that used, it wasn’t forced. If my old dentist would’ve used that, I would freaked.
By the way, a good dentist can totally change your view on things and help get rid of your fear, so it’s worth it to look for one.
