Around 05:33, I start talking about My Dress-Up Darling and at 05:57 I flash on the screen that I am about to spoil the My Dress-Darling manga and if you haven't read then the manga, then I recommend skipping around 30 seconds. I realize now that I should have made the Spoiler Warning alert much bigger and should have put it a few seconds before I said "One Day" because I should have known that most people aren't going to stop to read text that pops up for 1 second before vanishing again. If you haven't gotten to that part yet and you are watching the video for the first time, I recommed you skip around 30 to 40 seconds once you get to the 05:57 Timestamp, to avoid getting spoiled if you are interested in checking out My Dress-Up Darling's manga. To the people I did spoil, I apologize for possibly ruining your experience with Dress-Up Darling if you were in the middle of reading it, or if you were going to check out the manga, I'm sorry and I will make sure something like this doesn't happen again. 2: I've been seeing alot of comments that have called me out on the way that I pronounce the name of the show and at first I thought people were trolling me, but I'm starting to see that people were actually trying to correct me and not troll me. I pronounced the name as, "Ma-Keen", but the correct pronounciation is, "Ma-Kay-Enn". Before watching the anime, I didn't really know how the word was said and just used the way it was said in the OP because I thought that is how it was said and I heard it that way, but if it wasn't clear already, I wasn't paying full attention and because of that, I ended up butchering the pronounciation. Tbh the pronunciation part it's almost like whatever no everyone studied Japanese for 4 years to know how to pronounce every name, so I don't think ppl should apologize for those things (in my opinion). And for the spoiler part, I had no idea there were a pop up warning. I normally watch some videos in x2 velocity or just do another thing while having the video in the background so I would really appreciate if for the next one you have a pop up and say it. Not to be that guy, but actually the pronunciation is more like "ma-keh-een" from the first word of the title "make" and the -ine in "heroine", but with Japanese pronunciation. So your pronunciation isn't too far off, just missing the "eh" in the middle
The things you refer to in the 'expectations vs reality scenario', the 'expectations' part they do happen quite often in reality but sometimes only in a smaller unnoticeable scale that we only see the 'reality' around us more than what we expects. It's kinda similar to that thing where if you only do good deeds in your life but hardly anyone notices yet the moment you do one bad thing suddenly everyone's eyes are on you. Alas the intent of making stories that are 'unrealistic' is so people who chose to escape their reality can have a safe haven to return to, while the other stories exist to remind ourselves who got too comfy in our 'expectations' what is it we are escaping from.
this is a very insigtful perspective on how we look at stories we expect to go one way but focus on realism. This was very nice to read man, thank you for the comment.
that would describe me honestly. life is just sad that i want to go to delusional sea of romance animes to believe the "love" fantasy. it's kinda hard to swallow something like makeine when real life is even worse than the anime.
That's something that I noticed. While I can't say I've watched a lot of media nowadays, what I have observed: sometimes 'realistic' depiction in media- if done well, can serve as a breath of fresh air. But "unrealistic" situations- for example if two characters handle a dramatic situation very calmly and maturely, serves as a way to tell people on what's best to react to a situation, where acting hastily will result in undesirable outcomes. I personally think the contrast between "unrealistic expectations" in media and a realistic one serve as a good balance. One reminds you how things really are, while one can provide comfort and give you a good outlook on how things could've been if done correctly.
bunny girl senpai is one of my fav romance anime, i like the chracters their sacrastic dialogues with serious tone is so fun to watch, and theres no flustering they say those cliche things with straight face

having the case study of vanitas mentioned in a video about a goofy romcom show makes me so happy, need more vanitas and makeine talk in my recommended.
I know this isn’t a anime but if you’ve ever seen Regular Show, it really shows how romance works, Mordecai constantly messes up his relationships, while rigby who is initially immature, grows up to have one of the best relationships in the show. Mordecai also doesn’t end up with anyone who we’ve seen in the show, which is super realistic. You never know what happens in life.
I've been obsessed with this show since episode 1, from it's amazing animation, voice acting, artstyle, ost, and the fact its premise and plot is based entirely on cliches but still manages to feel more unique then many romance anime that try to avoid them. The comedy is also top-notch as well and flows naturally through conversation, there isn't a random episode where the story has to create a setting for the characters to have something to interact with like going to a ramen noodle shop multiple times (sorry chika, still love you though). The setting itself is beautiful as a result of being lifted from real life locations from the creeks, streets, shops, the school and even the exact look of its printer room. and there is an impressive amount of detail in the mob characters some of them even looking like they could fit in as main characters themselves. This is clearly a passion project from A-1 that got the time and care it needed to be as impressive as it is on every metric.
I didn't mention this in the video, but it's so insane that the show was announced for an anime before it even got a light novel. These are rumours I've heard but no one has verfied them. If it's true, then A-1 knew that this was going to be a success before the author even started typing.

I feel like the plot itself is pretty unique tho. You rarely see romance series focuses on the rejected love interest. Modern romance series usually focuses on the main couple and a few side couples. The rejected girls and boys usually get quickly sidelined and forgotten.
It's one of my all-time favorites! The plots and characters are outstanding, but the backgrounds featuring period-accurate depictions of Paris exteriors and interiors blew me away! Vanitas is so good that I may find myself watching it over and over. There's so much detail!

Just my personal opinion but, I don't think harem is the right word. While the story got three main female characters, Yanami seems to be the only potential love interest. And I don't think she has romantic feelings for him yet either. She still has lingering feelings for her love interest. Because of that, while she and Nukumizu's relationship may seems ambiguous, she does not have romantic feelings toward him yet. Of course, she doesn't reject the possibility that she may develop romantic feelings for Nukumizu as she said during a certain episode, she may develop romantic feelings for someone else later but she still can't let go of her feelings for her love interest yet and it is her right.
I would not say that. Look at the way she always has to be beside Nuku and the way she can get jealous if any other girl gets close to him. Her problem is she still has feelings that she cannot sort out yet in her head, but does not want too loose Nuku and keeps him within reach. I firmly believe in that last episode deep down in her heart she wanted Nuku to confess to her.
@@EBIKER56Idk how the source material depicts it, but the anime seems to make it pretty clear that Nuku and her are the “end game” and the series hasn’t so far seemed like one that is purposefully building up for some plot twist. Nuku himself said it, he doesn’t want a relationship that isn’t built upon a solid foundation to begin with, and that’s exactly what where getting I think. My guess is the series plays with the thought of other girls just enough to give some “tension” to the readers while still keeping it primarily focused on the character arcs and their own sort of stories, while Nuku and her slowly build up to something more in the background.
@@nfrance999 Well, the source material has a lot more scenes with the other girls during their arcs. The anime cuts out a lot of it to make it more for Yanami. I don't mind as I can tell in the source that Yanami would win in the end anyways.
@@JustEverton There isn't much by way of actual *development* cut out, there's just more scenes in general with the other girls. The important beats still get hit for everyone. And ultimately Anna is basically guaranteed to win, so it's not a huge deal for the anime to cut out some of the other girls' miscellaneous.
This was a blast! I feel like many people in society dull their feelings to the extent of not being able to perceive others talk about their own levels of satisfaction (kind of like how food critics have insane levels of vocabulary specifically intended for people to open up their minds on the feelings good food gives us all) with a story, piece of music, and so on. I could definitely say I am one of them, which is why, the directing behind this video (as a newcomer to the channel) was extremely spot-on in a surreal (my opinion) sense. The light-hearted music, cinematic directing, as well as your voice energizingly fit in well with what your goal in making a video - on your channel - should be (I have not fully understood the goal I am talking about, but I would stay connected to this channel in order to!). Ive been putting off watching makeine since ive been tight on time but have been following how people on yt are praising it, and lawd i gotta watch it youve really put the nail in the coffin, i absolutely love movies and shows that present you with the realistic (even if choatic) reactions, decisions and force you into the minds of the characters. I wish people would stop thinking “This anime doesn’t have tropes I’m used to seeing. That means it’s special and done right!” Tropes exist to be used people. Doesn’t matter if you’re tired is seeing certain ones. The absence of them in another show doesn’t make it inherently better. If you see tropes as being either good or bad, or base how you feel on them based on your exposure to them, you’re doing it wrong.
Good writing is good writing, there are definitely good shows that follow tropes, but imo if writing good shows without relying on well worn/recently used tropes was easy everyone would be doing it. There is no doing it wrong as far as consuming manga/ln/anime goes, and to so forcefully suggest otherwise is obnoxious.
The human brain is hardwired to dislike seeing the same patterns repeated over and over and over, its boring and painful. This is fundamental to our biology and hardwired into our conciousness. IF you like watching the same poorly thought out slop over and over and over thats great but most everyone else doesnt.

This show just keeps getting better every episode. I've started the source material and it's just as funny if not funnier although in the books the little sister is portrayed waaaay creepier imo(classic brocon sister) where in the show it just comes off as cute even if she is a tad bit clingy😅
I love this show! Might be the best this season. (unrelated) I've been obsessed with "More than a Married Couple but not Lovers" since it came out, and now also having read ahead into the manga, I think it's my favorite romance. I think it's a really misunderstood show because of the fanservice, but I think it's very peculiar and much deeper than it lets on.

I was more so comparing the early parts of the series and how they dragged after Marin's confession at the end of season 1 and then her and Gojo's relationship stalled to how quick and real the story of Makiene is.
Definitely agree. Makine to me, feels like what you'd get when you take the tropes and cliches of a romance, and play them straight without being smug or outright parodying them, while ALSO having the tropes and cliched by experienced by characters who *generally* behave like actual people. Anna is definitely the kid whose experience with love is their first love, and the thought of moving on seems foreign because they've never actually done it. It's clear she feels something more then just regular friendship to the MC, but its still just the inklings of something more, the kernels if you will. For people whove never gone through love or rejection yet, the reality that you've moved on sometimes doesn't hit until you look at someone else and find that, wait a second, you feel something toward someone else now. Teenage romance I generally find more grating then fun, because its melodramatic to the point of nonsensical, but I appreciate how Makine instead uses it to explore what love and romance feels like to those who are in the midst of hormonal and emotional maturity typhoons.
its interesting, i used to be Anna, now im Kazuhiko. i used to have a girl that i couldnt stop thinking about like anna, but i moved on and now i dont have anyone im interested in like kazuhiko at the start. ill take a back roll alot of the time and support my friends just enough. let me tell you though, its a great source of entrainment to watch act so crazy (note. im 2 years older than all of them and had my heartbreak when i was their age too, now i just get to spectate)

I've never finished a romance series because I either can't stand the main characters or there's unnecessary padding. Losing Heroines is the 1st romance that has actually gotten me invested into the psychology, growth and ambitions of the characters. Genuinely going to stick with this one and am looking forward to see how it concludes.

honestly this is one of the best romance anime I've see cuz the character here is very realistic i mea i love all the girls and i love that the mc is always a person that they can always rely on but for me the best girl is still the introvert girl cuz i love her character development and most of my friends are introvert so i must say that her character is very accurate i also love that shes a very very normal girl and her family is normal her financial situation is very relatable cuz most of us are poor or average
So it's a great romcom. Got it. But was it worth more than a possible 2nd season of 86? IMO, A-1 pictures should've animated 86 season 2, but that's just what I think

This argument about how things needs to be more “realistic” in entertainment is ludicrous. The whole point of entertainment is to give you a product that’s of the fantasy in peoples imagination. The general rom coms with the troupe of the shy boy, Perverted guy, confident guy, aggressive girl, shy girl, embarrassed girl etc. are staples in the genre cause it makes for good entertainment. It’s nice to have things that break the norm from time to time but this argument of needing things to be more “real” is destroying the entertainment we love.
I mean you aren't wrong brother, but I never tried to make a case for more series being realistic. I just said that this anime is more grounded in reality with the story it is trying to convey.
Not everything needs to be escapism. I agree that something's absolutely can be but not every story needs to serve as an escapist fantasy. I don't watch Akira or Ghost in the Shell because I want to live in those worlds or be like those characters, I definitely wouldn't want to, it's because they're compelling plots and characters. There's a place for tropey archetype stories and there's a place for grittier or more grounded realism

Cliches are but a caricature of real things. Trust me when I say Bisque Doll's romance approach is VERY plausible. Edit: Life can be harsh, but it doesn't have to be nothing but, I fail to see true realism in the tragedy of it. It matters not, because much is too different between circumstances.
the reason kaguya sama love is war has always been one of my favorite romances is because the not confessing trope is done differently. they’re doing it because they want the other person to confess first because that makes themself win, instead of out of fear of rejection or awkwardness

The Seven Domain's of Women's Health is one of the first articles that pops up when you look up "Is Love an emotion". It's an article I found really interesting so I used it for the video. I'm not saying this study and article is the one that defines the true definition of love because that would be very dumb. I do recommed giving it a read, It is pretty insightful on how people view love.

I haven't watch romance in a while and I think it'll be fun, especially since it has themes of break up and stuff instead of the usual romance anime tropes. I read the manga for this, and I really recommend sticking with it, it's incredible. Seinen romance is the way to go for the genre, you won't regret the time invested.
None of that is real or realistic. That's why we watch it, as romance IRL is gloomy and depressing. It's interesting, that you've mentioned A sign of affection, as this one IS a harsh reality check, if you want one. Watching this show it's important to remember three rules. First - anime is a very target audience-oriented medium, it knows very well what its target audience wants and likes and it's very good at delivering it. Second - A sign of affection is a shoujo, meaning the target audience is young women. And last - unlike real life - nothing in this story is an accident, all characters, interactions, and decisions - are scripted in order to follow rules 1 and 2. And now if you've watched the anime - considering all the above - Oushi, why is he even in this story?

The things you refer to in the 'expectations vs reality scenario', the 'expectations' part they do happen quite often in reality but sometimes only in a smaller unnoticeable scale that we only see the 'reality' around us more than what we expects. It's kinda similar to that thing where if you only do good deeds in your life but hardly anyone notices yet the moment you do one bad thing suddenly everyone's eyes are on you. Alas the intent of making stories that are 'unrealistic' is so people who chose to escape their reality can have a safe haven to return to, while the other stories exist to remind ourselves who got too comfy in our 'expectations' what is it we are escaping from.

That's something that I noticed. While I can't say I've watched a lot of media nowadays, what I have observed: sometimes 'realistic' depiction in media- if done well, can serve as a breath of fresh air. But "unrealistic" situations- for example if two characters handle a dramatic situation very calmly and maturely, serves as a way to tell people on what's best to react to a situation, where acting hastily will result in undesirable outcomes. I personally think the contrast between "unrealistic expectations" in media and a realistic one serve as a good balance. One reminds you how things really are, while one can provide comfort and give you a good outlook on how things could've been if done correctly.

I've been obsessed with this show since episode 1, from it's amazing animation, voice acting, artstyle, ost, and the fact its premise and plot is based entirely on cliches but still manages to feel more unique then many romance anime that try to avoid them.
The comedy is also top-notch as well and flows naturally through conversation, there isn't a random episode where the story has to create a setting for the characters to have something to interact with like going to a ramen noodle shop multiple times (sorry chika, still love you though).
The setting itself is beautiful as a result of being lifted from real life locations from the creeks, streets, shops, the school and even the exact look of its printer room. and there is an impressive amount of detail in the mob characters some of them even looking like they could fit in as main characters themselves.
This is clearly a passion project from A-1 that got the time and care it needed to be as impressive as it is on every metric.
I didn't mention this in the video, but it's so insane that the show was announced for an anime before it even got a light novel. These are rumours I've heard but no one has verfied them. If it's true, then A-1 knew that this was going to be a success before the author even started typing.

I feel like the plot itself is pretty unique tho. You rarely see romance series focuses on the rejected love interest. Modern romance series usually focuses on the main couple and a few side couples. The rejected girls and boys usually get quickly sidelined and forgotten.

Just my personal opinion but, I don't think harem is the right word. While the story got three main female characters, Yanami seems to be the only potential love interest. And I don't think she has romantic feelings for him yet either. She still has lingering feelings for her love interest. Because of that, while she and Nukumizu's relationship may seems ambiguous, she does not have romantic feelings toward him yet. Of course, she doesn't reject the possibility that she may develop romantic feelings for Nukumizu as she said during a certain episode, she may develop romantic feelings for someone else later but she still can't let go of her feelings for her love interest yet and it is her right.
I would not say that. Look at the way she always has to be beside Nuku and the way she can get jealous if any other girl gets close to him. Her problem is she still has feelings that she cannot sort out yet in her head, but does not want too loose Nuku and keeps him within reach. I firmly believe in that last episode deep down in her heart she wanted Nuku to confess to her.
@@EBIKER56Idk how the source material depicts it, but the anime seems to make it pretty clear that Nuku and her are the “end game” and the series hasn’t so far seemed like one that is purposefully building up for some plot twist. Nuku himself said it, he doesn’t want a relationship that isn’t built upon a solid foundation to begin with, and that’s exactly what where getting I think.
My guess is the series plays with the thought of other girls just enough to give some “tension” to the readers while still keeping it primarily focused on the character arcs and their own sort of stories, while Nuku and her slowly build up to something more in the background.
@@nfrance999 Well, the source material has a lot more scenes with the other girls during their arcs. The anime cuts out a lot of it to make it more for Yanami. I don't mind as I can tell in the source that Yanami would win in the end anyways.

@@JustEverton There isn't much by way of actual *development* cut out, there's just more scenes in general with the other girls. The important beats still get hit for everyone. And ultimately Anna is basically guaranteed to win, so it's not a huge deal for the anime to cut out some of the other girls' miscellaneous.
The opening scene sold me on the whole series. It's one of the funniest scenes I've seen in anime thus far.

This was a blast! I feel like many people in society dull their feelings to the extent of not being able to perceive others talk about their own levels of satisfaction (kind of like how food critics have insane levels of vocabulary specifically intended for people to open up their minds on the feelings good food gives us all) with a story, piece of music, and so on. I could definitely say I am one of them, which is why, the directing behind this video (as a newcomer to the channel) was extremely spot-on in a surreal (my opinion) sense. The light-hearted music, cinematic directing, as well as your voice energizingly fit in well with what your goal in making a video - on your channel - should be (I have not fully understood the goal I am talking about, but I would stay connected to this channel in order to!). Loved every aspect of what I saw, ive been wanting to watch Makeine for the past week, now you've sold me on it!

Tropes exist to be used people. Doesn’t matter if you’re tired is seeing certain ones. The absence of them in another show doesn’t make it inherently better. If you see tropes as being either good or bad, or base how you feel on them based on your exposure to them, you’re doing it wrong.

Good writing is good writing, there are definitely good shows that follow tropes, but imo if writing good shows without relying on well worn/recently used tropes was easy everyone would be doing it. I think comparing to Dress Up Darling isn't fair, since the most recent chapters felt very visceral and real (minus the way the tension fell away instantly lol)
I was more so comparing the early parts of the series and how they dragged after Marin's confession at the end of season 1 and then her and Gojo's relationship stalled to how quick and real the story of Makiene is.
Definitely agree. Makine to me, feels like what you'd get when you take the tropes and cliches of a romance, and play them straight without being smug or outright parodying them, while ALSO having the tropes and cliched by experienced by characters who *generally* behave like actual people.
Anna is definitely the kid whose experience with love is their first love, and the thought of moving on seems foreign because they've never actually done it. It's clear she feels something more then just regular friendship to the MC, but its still just the inklings of something more, the kernels if you will. For people whove never gone through love or rejection yet, the reality that you've moved on sometimes doesn't hit until you look at someone else and find that, wait a second, you feel something toward someone else now.
Teenage romance I generally find more grating then fun, because its melodramatic to the point of nonsensical, but I appreciate how Makine instead uses it to explore what love and romance feels like to those who are in the midst of hormonal and emotional maturity typhoons.

its interesting, i used to be Anna, now im Kazuhiko. i used to have a girl that i couldnt stop thinking about like anna, but i moved on and now i dont have anyone im interested in like kazuhiko at the start. ill take a back roll alot of the time and support my friends just enough. let me tell you though, its a great source of entrainment to watch act so crazy (note. im 2 years older than all of them and had my heartbreak when i was their age too, now i just get to spectate)

I've never finished a romance series because I either can't stand the main characters or there's unnecessary padding. Losing Heroines is the 1st romance that has actually gotten me invested into the psychology, growth and ambitions of the characters.

This argument about how things needs to be more “realistic” in entertainment is ludicrous. The whole point of entertainment is to give you a product that’s of the fantasy in peoples imagination. The general rom coms with the troupe of the shy boy, Perverted guy, confident guy, aggressive girl, shy girl, embarrassed girl etc. are staples in the genre cause it makes for good entertainment. It’s nice to have things that break the norm from time to time but this argument of needing things to be more “real” is destroying the entertainment we love.

The Seven Domain's of Women's Health is one of the first articles that pops up when you look up "Is Love an emotion". It's an article I found really interesting so I used it for the video. I'm not saying this study and article is the one that defines the true definition of love because that would be very dumb. I do recommed giving it a read, It is pretty insightful on how people view love.

This is the first video I've seen of you (It just popped up in my TH-cam home) and this is really good. I'm definitely going to check out this anime later today. I haven't watch romance in a while and I think it'll be fun, especially since it has themes of break up and stuff instead of the usual romance anime tropes. And at the end you mentioned the art style and music, and that makes me excited too. I noticed while watching how good the animation was, and I love music so so much in general so I'm excited to hear that too. Good job on the video again.

I read the manga for this, and I really recommend sticking with it, it's incredible. Seinen romance is the way to go for the genre, you won't regret the time invested.

It's interesting, that you've mentioned A sign of affection, as this one IS a harsh reality check, if you want one.
Watching this show it's important to remember three rules.
First - anime is a very target audience-oriented medium, it knows very well what its target audience wants and likes and it's very good at delivering it.
Second - A sign of affection is a shoujo, meaning the target audience is young women.
And last - unlike real life - nothing in this story is an accident, all characters, interactions, and decisions - are scripted in order to follow rules 1 and 2.
And now if you've watched the anime - considering all the above - Oushi, why is he even in this story?
