I've gotten to talk to Norman since this interview actually!
Can you ask him if he sees any kind of hope for some kind of return to a left which draws inspiration primarily from a materialist analysis? And does Norman have a theory as to how the economic and social justice are inter-related? Lots of the social struggles are easily popularized by a "trigger event" (George Floyd here, Mahsa Amini in Iran), but attempts to popularize economic justice is a bit more difficult as far as I can tell.

Do you think the LGBTQ+ community will wake up and read Marx after watching Katy Perry vote Republican in the California election, or do you think they will continue to label you as homophobic and transphobic for suggesting there isn't anything revolutionary about gender and sexuality?

Could you ask dr. Finkelstein what he thinks is the cause of the "cultural shift", where people are easily offended by truthful criticism, and somehow act like offending someone in search of the truth is reprehensible? I feel like this has become a major problem in present day time societies, for as far as I can tell.

Absolutely ... been reading him for 20 years ... razor-sharp, deeply principled, scrupulously honest & courageous ... and (like most truly impressive intellects & political activists) extremely modest, genuine humility. It's been a source of real satisfaction for me that the greatest analysts of the Left immediately saw through the Critical Theory Cult & its fundamental subversion of core Left, liberal & social democratic principles.

If finkelstein chose to keep the event obscure I’ll do the same.

It's not just Dershowitz ,but I think the state of Israel has the whole notion of "Hasbara" - to silence critics of Israel. I can only imagine they act swiftly to silence him on platforms such as TH-cam. Norman almost always is interviewed over Israeli incursions into Gaza. I love Norman, sure - i have my disagreements with him, (especially with regards to his stances on the Palestinian one-state-solution and BDS), but agree with almost everything he talks/writes about with regards to free speech and "woke" cancel culture. I also love Tariq Ali too, he's quite a brilliant writer and leftist intellectual as well, and i read the message he sent to you about Verso books refusing to publish Norman's new book, it was pretty viscous. I am kinda stunned at how combative/harsh Tariq was, especially seeing as how they not only are both prominent leftists - but have also been on many a panel discussing Israel's apartheid and ongoing ethnic-cleansing of Palestinians, and the two seemed pretty tight. Now i haven't read Norman's book yet, (obviously - it hasn't been released yet), but i have a hard tim believing that it's offensive enough and/or incoherent enough to warrant such a snide response from Tariq. If it's anything like what Norman says when discussing woke cancel-culture and id-pol, i have a hard time believe that the book was "nonsensical" drivel, which was what Tariq accused it of being. I have a feeling that this has more to do with him simply strongly disagreeing with Norman's take, and is unfortunately allowing this influence his analysis of the quality of the book. Now, it cold come out and end up being the garbage fire that Ali asserts that it is, but i highly-highly doubt it! Which is why im pretty damn disappointed with Tariq on this whole back and forth. Great interview/discussion here though!

If you have seen our videos with Vijay, we started off with Julian Assange, as the district court decision had just come in. By the same logic, we should have begun with Gaza. In America, the people who oppose reproductive rights for women also oppose any social spending to care for poor mothers or the children they will bear. It's not about concern for the children.
It is depressing to see more women, minorities and LGBTQ being just as greedy, militaristic and apathetic as the the old white males of the past instead of using their new influence to address economic inequalities. However, it's absurd to suggest that it's actually the people rehashing libertarian or conservative economic ideology under a cloak of being "anti-woke" who are being intellectually brave. Were David Duke, Jerry Falwell, Pat Buchanan or Phyllis Schlafly "courageous?" The hysterically exaggerated importance of cancel culture in social media and academia has only given traditional conservatives and a new opportunistic pundit class something to hide their class warfare behind.

This term "woke left" seems inaccurate I would say because these people are not, in the political sense, Left unless the term Left has come to mean bourgeois worldview. The disseminators of cancel culture, identity politics, "wokism", etc. worldview want wealth and power and privileges themselves. They have no issue with the status quo so long as they can be integrated into it's higher income echelons. The promoters of these politics are ultimately hustlers for the one percent. These politics were developed as tools in the ruling class' toolbox to divide the working class against itself in ways that don't threaten ruling classes. Get working classes to view social reality through these reactionary lenses instead of a class based view and critique of current social relations.
The abortion issue should be analysed I would think in the context of the material conditions of women generally most all of whom today are proletarians. Social relations, class divisions and antagonisms, private property, etc. affect women's life possibilities generally. A pregnant young single working class female is a whole other question. And attaching a stigma to abortion doesn't seem right in terms of punishing or causing more anguish to the woman and perhaps shouldn't be reduced to an individual female question but a social question. Women generally and especially working class women are pressured by things not under their control to have or not have an abortion. There's no absolute moral argument vis-a-vis abortion and in today's society in the USA the ruling class have decided that abortion is not a constitutionally provided "right" and thus state government's will decide.
Thank you Norman Finkelstein for the analyses with details of these political trends that have been around for decades unbeknownst to but dividing the working class. Thanks to the host too.

The whole “woke politics” is not stupid. It is a right wing redirection of traditional left wing views. The ideas of identity, woke, cancel culture and political correctness allows the right wing to misrepresent and demonize the left and avoid the primary issue of the left which is class struggle.
The right wing now have all the straw men they need to switch the conversation and not address the terrible overlooked issue of the impoverished working class that have been systematically repressed and impoverished over the past 40 years. At this point 75+% of the US population life from paycheck to paycheck with less then $400 in the bank for an emergency. They have no savings, no retirement savings and no future as they find their bodies falling apart from years of exploited back breaking labor. These ppl are resorting to drugs and alcohol and suicide as their remedy to their destroyed lives.
This is what the right wing desperately try to deny and avoid. The next time you hear anyone talking about woke and identity politics then tell them to shut up and go to hell. Then remind them of what real leftism is about: restoring the destroyed lives of working ppl and the poor.

I agree. In Canada, where I am, we are flooded with ideas and perceptions coming out of the U.S., where bizzarely, they seem to like to define "the left" in turns of what the neo-liberal corporatist Democratic officially embraces, or as the whatever happens to be the current "political voter base" for the Dems, and "the right" in turns of the Republican party (and Libertarian party). "Conservatives" are "right wing" now, not only because the support the status quo, including defending the poverty and disadvantage of the poor and the wealth and unequal advantage of the waelthy, but now also because they embrace the now more "traditional values" such as the recognition of fundamental human rights, while the corporate "left" are radical in their abandonment of not only "Chrisrian values", but also in their abandonment of fundamental human rights (like the right to say whether or not you receive an experimental medical proceedure), and they seem to promote and legitimatize, all in the name of "freedom and liberty", every possible way capitalists could more fully exploit and control other people... or perhaps rather, those "moral relaxations" that they tend to support seem to tend to correspond to one's which extend the opportunities for capitalistic exploitation.
I don't know, maybe I'm just tongue wagging here, but I consider myself to basically be a "Christian socialist", and I tend to like watching Jimmy Dore videos, and I guess Jimmy really hates the Dems or something, he says he hates that they're deceitful hypocrites because they're just as corrupt and bad as the Repubs, and always only govern at the behest of the ruling, corporate backed super wealthy elite, but that their even worse than the GOP because they're supposed to be for the poor and middle class.
And anyway, he and Max Blumenthal go on about how all the crazy lefties were fully onboard with "mandatory vaccinations" (for a private, proprietary, for-profit big pharma designed patented, novel technology "vaccine" for which no long term impact data was available, and which had only been granted emergency use authorization because the pharma companies effectively control the regulatory agencies involved, and because "elected representatives" are all bought and on the take, etc). And of course even Noam Chomsky makes some rediculous statement to the effect that basically, people refusing to be injected with this experimental substance, (which was admitted to have been designed soley in order to create on ongoing profit stream for the Pharma corps.), didn't, in his opinion, deserve to retain individual rights and liberties.
And most of those willing to push back against the "mandatory jabs" seemed to be coming from the "religious (and conservative, and libertarian) right", i.e. significantly, Christians.
And similarly, there seems to be more push back against arming the Fascists in the Ukraine, and escalatiing to a war against Russia, from the "right wing", while the media zombified "left",
(who, accrding the American categorization, are those who still back the Democrats) tend to believe whatever the corporate media is saying, that tend to be tripple jabbed if not more, that still seem to believe that Russia helped Trump steal the election, that January 11 was far more terrifying threat to "our democracy" than September 11, that seem to think Putin is the devil incarnate and that the Ukraine was an innocent victim of unjustifiable Russian aggression, etc.
It seems all so upside down now, with the majority of the anti-war voices coming from "the right". And then of course you have the WEF, basically representing the Western owner/ruling class, supposedly backing a socialist transhumanist (and basically evil) agenda, who, through their corporations, have basically been dictating Western government policy, and spinning out an inverted reality propaganda narative.
Yeah, I guess I'm just ranting here. But getting back to my original point, it bothers me when "woke trans-gay activism", BLM, "identity politics", "defund the police" "radicalism", "pro-lockdown and pro-mandate" are all labelled with a broad brush as being "leftist", as well as the crazy "we stand with democratic Ukraine against authoritarian and fascist Russia, even if it means going to war with both Russia and China and even it means losing everthing", when, in reality, this is all media manufactured Disney alternate reality/fantasy, and it the Ukraine that is the authoritarian Fascists, and the idiotic proxy war against Russia is an insane neocon plan to conquer Russia so that our parasitc capitalist overlords (many of whom associate with the WEF) can seize control of its people, land and resources, and eventually, do the same to India and China and everywhere.
And our governments are all the pockets of our true ruling class through the WEF, and "the West" is thoroughly corrupted and slowly imploding.
Sorry, I can't seem to help myself here, I keep on ranting. I guess I feel very frustrated and annoyed. Anyway brother, all the very best. I expect better days are coming. Cheers, peace, love and God bless.

These "defenders of life" will not let a migrant in this country but they want to "save" this human life? Foh! It's tragic no doubt that a life had to die but that's the best course if the woman doesn't want the child. There are enough abused and ignored kids in the world. They can use all their anecdotes but they aren't -touching- coming anywhere near that baby AFTER it's born but before birth, they'll defend it as if it's their child.
