I've studied some Edwin gordon and he explains how it works, will try to roughly paraphrase. Learning lines and progressions in 12 keys requires you to evolve from thinking in isolated notes/contexts into pattern learning. If you know your Maj 7 arppeggios really well then C E G B and G B D F# are 2 bits of Information (8 notes/bits of info if you don't know them well!). The underlying pattern is 1 3 5 7 and that remains one bit of information throughout all 12 keys. In order to play patterns over moving harmony in all 12 keys, you really have to hear how each pattern and chord movement relates to each other, this is what really improves your aural ability, hearing the relationship of notes, patters and chords to each other. This is also one of the main benefits of Solfa (with a movable Do). Do Re Mi is the same in every key, the emphasises is on the relationship of notes and become apparent almost immediately if you start kids singing songs in different keys, that way pattern learning becomes far more intuitive and starts much sooner. People like myself who haven't grown up with Solfa only really learn to understand patterns and relationships after we start tackling things in all 12 keys.

It’s reassuring to know that the world apparently still recognizes a great musician when it hears one. So awesome the lifestyle this guy is living with his music. Well deserved too.

One definition of learning is "pattern recognition." When one learns patterns in 12 keys the brain groks the intervallic relationships in the patterns. "Pattern recognitions" are more likely to be retained that rote repetition

One of the best things to do. Parker tunes are great for this, especially his blues tunes. The real challenge is not just learning them in all keys, but making them sound just as "slick" in all keys. C# just as smooth and hip as C. That is what I find is the thing to get out of this. Starting with a metronome SLOW...speed will follow. Parker's tunes already have chord substitutions built into the tune many times...learn in one key then without writing them down, use your ear and learn in another...great stuff, thanks!

Right on the money Chad. Tried and true. I´m 73 now and When I was 16 the older players were telling me to play everything in the keys. One of my favourite
things to do if i don´t feel like practicing. As soon as i start in the keys, it´s fun and i get so much out of it. Thanks for putting it out there.

Thank you for the willingness to share your knowledge on the subject, your approach is very logical and common sense based, I can already see improvement in my own ability to memorize tunes in general because of this approach. I still have a lot of work to do, but this is making my work easier and more fun

I bought your package all your standards and practice stuff. OHHHH my... my ear opened up. I have been practicing in all keys already, but on your warmup book, I start in Db then work my way around. I was doing it before, but your warmup book and memorizing standard book is making my ear wake up. Thank you for this. I am looking forward to more progress in the future.

Second, from Yorkshire England. Nice sound also. We find that people don't know tunes anymore. Especially the young.

Thanks, Chad. I have heard "Learn the tune in all 12 keys" from just about every great jazz player. Yet, for what ever incredibly strange reason, I just don't do it. I too "shy" away from doing it and have no idea why. I even bought your course that talk about hear and LOVE it... but have yet to really USE it on a regular basis. VERY strange, huh? LOL. All I can think of is that I never feel like I am playing the material well enough in the one key so why bother complicating it further by dividing my time further and trying it in all 12. I know though that that is the whole point... practicing in ALL 12 actually and paradoxically and magically SPEEDS up the whole process instead of slowing it down! Your video here has once again inspired me to start going through your course one progression at a time. I know I can do this! :) thanks for the inspiration.

yes indeed. it's easy to avoid because it's *hard* and takes a lot of concentration, especially at first. but yes it gets progressively easier and much faster with time

Thanks for sharing all this good stuff. I'm working on these progressions along side the 4 tune learning package, approach note etudes. It's a very good layout and worth every penny. I'd love to see one on triad pairs!?! Thanks again!!

12 keys. I agree, so why won't any jazz channel on TH-cam create some jam tracks for the most popular standards in all 12 keys? It is a lot of work but as it's so important, it should be a priority. All The Things You Are 12 key workout would be a good one to start with!
