The Story of Genki from Kyoto Zoo

- Genki was born at Kyoto Zoo. She currently lives happily with her husband Momotaro and her 2 beautiful sons, Gentaro and Kintaro. However, she has lived a rather tragic life. This is her story. 02:38 After Makk died they brought a new silverback named Gon. Gon was born sometime in 1971. He was moved to Kyoto Zoo following a breeding recommendation with "Hiromi" (31 years old) and "Genki" (18 years old). This was not successful and Gon never had children.
2:57 Although Genki and Gon mated they did not have any kids together.
03:04 Genki is moved to Ueno Zoo. On March of 1997 she was moved to Ueno Zoo following a breeding recommendation from the Japanese Society of Zoos and Aquariums. The Silverback at that time was Biju. The move was rather traumatic for Genki, and she lost 43 kilograms of weight which equals 95 pounds.
03:24 Genki & Biju. Genki got pregnant with Biju but unfortunately, she had a miscarriage.
03:33 Momoko. Early in 1999 they brought Momoko, who is a dominant female, to the group and Biju became more interested in her than in Genki.
03:44 Self Mutilation. After loosing her baby Genki was heartbroken. She was also experiencing severe stress due to her reduced position in the hierarchy of the group. As a result she bit off the tip of her finger in one of her hands. After that Genki was moved back to Kyoto Zoo in 1999 for her own good.
04:01 Hiromi dies. On November 24, 2008 Hiromi died after receiving multiple severe injuries in an altercation with the silverback Gon.

04:18 After Hiromi and Gon died, Genki was alone at Kyoto Zoo until Momotaro arrived.
04:27 Born on July 3, 2000 at Ueno Zoo in Tokyo to Silverback Biju and Mother Momoko. Momotaro at 1, 10 and 20 years old.

04:48 Genki meets Momotaro. Prior to his arrival, Genki was shown videos of Momotaro who moved in on October 18, 2010. Interestingly, Momotaro was the son of Biju and Momoko. It was instant attraction between Genki and Momotaro.
05:11 6 Months later Genki is pregnant for the 1st time.
05:19 About 8.5 months later, her first born son, Gentaro was born on December 21, 2011.
05:47 Genki wanted to be a good caring mother. She did everything that she was supposed to do. However, she was not able to produce milk.
06:04 Unfortunately, the zoo decided to take Gentaro away so they could hand feed him. This was not done out of malice but to save his life. Genki was heartbroken and would never forget that they took her baby away from her. You can see her frustration when she hits the wall in the video.
06:42 They were reunited when Gentaro was 10 months old. Right away Genki was seen snuggling him to sleep and playing with him. He took to Genki very well right away.
07:03 Momotaro also wanted his little boy back. On the right, you can see him peeking through a door at Genki and Gentaro. He did everything he could to make Gentaro comfortable with him and not be scared.

07:33 The Old Enclosure. Prior to 2014 this was the enclosure for the gorillas at Kyoto Zoo. It was very similar to the old enclosure at Higashiyama Zoo where the Shabani family lived.

07:51 The new enclosure opened on April 2014.
Some of the new features are as follows: * They have a covered area by the fence in order to imitate the tree life of western gorillas. * They set up poles and ropes in the enclosure so they area able to utilize the space in three dimensions. * Tempered glass is used for the indoor exhibition room and the outdoor exhibition hall. This is so the voices and smells of the public cannot be felt by the gorillas. * They set up a multipurpose room so they can observe the training of each other for health management. * An observation corner is set up on the rooftop to support behavioral surveys and backyard tours. * Environmentally friendly facilities include rooftop greening (19.6㎡), solar power generation (2.3kw, 0.6 times that of ordinary households), and one solar outdoor light.

08:38 On December 19, 2018 Genki gave birth to her 2nd healthy son. It was soon obvious that Gentaro had a baby brother. This baby would be named Kintaro. Perhaps remembering how Gentaro was taken away from her, she would not put the baby down. This made it difficult for the staff to take a look at him and assess his health status. It would be 7 months before Genki relaxed her hold on Kintaro. But it was slow going. She would hold on to his leg while he played with Gentaro. Of course, Gentaro also tried to “loot” baby Kintaro ever so often so you can’t really blame Genki.
08:58 History repeats itself. As soon as Genki was pregnant the zoo started giving her a tea to drink which was supposed to encourage milk production. However, Genki was not producing enough milk this time around either. At 7 months, as you can see in these pictures Kintaro still looked like a newborn. Genki also looked much too thin, and you could see her ribs and hip bones.
09:13 This time the zoo was able to implement a plan that did not involve removing Kintaro from Genki. They started giving Genki more of the special tea. They also started feeding her separately from Momotaro and providing more high calorie foods for her. Kintaro also started getting extra baby milk, sweet fruits, and other soft foods to help him gain weight. They were successful and soon both started to gain weight.
09:32 On March 13, 2019 there was a small earthquake in Kyoto. The roar you hear is the sound of the earthquake. Gentaro immediately climbed higher. Maybe because he felt the ground move. However, Momotaro was the hero. He immediately ran to Genki who was holding baby Kintaro and guided her to where he thought she'd be safe. Afterwards, he went around the enclosure looking around to make sure it was safe.

09:55 Genki is finally happy. She has a husband and two sons that love her very much. She also lives in a nice zoo that takes very good care of all of them.

Another great video Gisel thanks. Genki's had some ups and downs in her life but she seems to be happy now. I've heard that she's mating again, I don't know if that's true but I'm sure another baby would make Genki a happy girl.

When Momotaro ran to usher Genki to safety near the door, I couldn’t stop smiling. Wow. The most amazing intelligent beautiful creatures on earth.

Thank you, Gisel for making such a beautiful documentary about Genki and the Kyoto city zoo. I read about Genki recently on a book written by Chisato Abe (a famous gorilla artist) that when Genki was small, the zoo thought she was a boy. It was a few years later when they noticed she was a female. Usually the name 'Genki' is given to a boy in Japan. In addition, Genki was a super naughty child gorilla just like Gentaro.😂 Genki was a handful.

Genki is one of my favorite gorillas! She is so beautiful like her mother! Even at 1year old Momotaro was a big muscle Babyback! I love this family!

I was so impressed and touched by that as well. Afterwards he walked around the enclosure in his best silverback posture to make sure everything is ok and the threat is gone. Genki also immediately deferred to Momotaro and did exactly what he wanted her to do. They are a team. A very loving team.
Thank you for sharing their stories. I had always found it so odd that Genki would not put Kintaro down when he was born, I thought maybe in the gorilla society, this was how all mothers were? But in watching other videos from other zoos, this did not occur with other mothers. But, now that I know the back story regarding Gentaro being separated from her (for his own good), I totally understand why she would not let go of Kintaro. If someone had separated me from my newborn baby for 10 months, I wouldn’t let go of my new baby either. Genki is such a good mother and loves her family very much. Momotaro is such a loving father and husband too. I love watching them and watching their family grow. Genki deserves to be a happy wife and mother. I feel so sad that she wasn’t always happy.
When i saw the pic of Momotaro at 1yr old i was like "holy cow Momotaro you were ripped even as a baby"
Thank you for this upload, i already knew a little bit of Genki's story but i never knew at least 80% of it, Genki has had a tough life.
I have always wondered about Genki's half missing finger but i wasnt prepared for how she actually lost it, that really made me cry, she had to have been beyond depressed to have done that to herself, just goes to show yet again just how similar we are to each other.
While it was sad at the time for Genki to have lucked out with 2 partners and to have been alone for quite a long time, i really think in the end it worked out perfectly for her, Momotaro is the perfect mate for Genki and a perfect dad for their sons. Towards the end, the footage of the earthquake and Momotaro immediately going to save his wife, melted my heart so much, whata man!!! 😍🥰😍
I wonder if Genki's age when she had Gentaro played a huge factor in her not rejecting him when the zoo gave him back to Genki at 10mths old, if she had been younger, less mature, less wise, less wanting of a baby would she have still taken Gentaro back???
We will never know i guess, its just a thought, either way not only is Genki an AMAZING mother, she could sure as shit teach quite a few human mother's a thing or two.

Genki is my fave, her story is so heart touching, she has been thru so much - self-mutilating, depression, loss of her mother, miscarriages, lost her rank as the dominant female, so many things she went thru and still kept going now look at her she has a family, 2 sons, etc…… she deserves everything she has right now, she’s paid her price. Gisel Simon has done a valuable public service with her expertly done video biography of gorilla matriarch Genki. Well researched and accompanied by a detailed narrative, the film is riveting from start to finish. I became a fan of Genki’s when the pandemic gave me the time I needed to indulge my interest in apes via TH-cam. That’s when I became a regular watcher of Gorilla Today. Simon’s film gave me added sympathy for the Genki I had grown to know and love through the MOS video updates. Seeing how much trauma Genki endured over the years has made me love her all the more. I also have gained additional respect for zookeepers and their hard work to anticipate Genki’s needs. Their professionalism is evident in the way they modify their approach to her care based on experience. Her good health and thriving family owe much to their efforts. A big thanks to each and every keeper, from one Genki fan to another.
Wow, SamUndJet, that is pretty high praise indeed and I am very thankful and touched by it. I did want to point out the things the zoo and the caregivers have done for them. It is easy to criticize based on videos that show only a small area at a time. They are obviously well loved. 🥰

@@GiselSimon In my opinion Gorilla's need better enclosures.. For me it is just unacceptable we take these beautiful animals out of the wild and breed them in such enclosures that barely mimic/simulate their natural habitat. Gorillas especially should be afforded large, wooded, terrain. I know you cant simulate a rainforest perfectly in Japan, but Gorilla's travel a lot in the wild. No wonder so many of them are obese in captivity and die from heart disease. Its exactly why Mountain Gorilla's cant live in Captivity at ALL... I just cant believe these types of enclosures are the best Humans have to offer Gorilla's. And I am not saying they are not loved or well taken care of, but I am saying they deserve better habitat to simulate their natural habitat.
@@JonHop1 hi Jon. I just read your comment that gorillas are obese in captivity. This view probably is biased on how we humans see obesity in our own species. After I did extensive reading and research to learn more about gorillas I learned that their bellies are always going to have bellies larger than their chests.
Gorillas have many feet of intestines, because their diet is herbivore except for a few ants, etc. Way more feet then ours, the cellulose needs a very long digestive track to break down, and a chemical process in their blood with bacteria turns it into muscle mass as well as nutrition for other reasons. That’s why they need to eat a lot. Momo needs at least 60 lbs. of food a day. Their chest will always be smaller than their belly.
You are correct in their wild habitat. Zoos have come a long way from the pre-1980s. But they cannot replicate that, obviously.
The pictures at 2:30 are stunning! 3 year old Genki is like an exact replica of what Kint looks like right now and then the 8 year old Genki looks exactly how Gentaro looks now!!! They all have the same facial features. It’s so cool. Very beautiful animals. Love Kintaro and Gentaro! ❤️
Thank you so much for Genki's story. I knew a little bit about her past, but you joined all the pieces of her story together in your video. She had such a heartbreaking life for awhile, but Kyoto Zoo brought her to a happier place in life. She is the best gorilla mother I've ever observed. And, OMG, Kintaro looks exactly like Genki at 3 years of age. Again, thank you for sharing.

Extraordinary historical systematic documentation. I used to wonder what happened to Genki's finger. She stressed to the core when lost her first baby. Most horrible tragedy till the end in human being too. Also understand why she is so much protective of Kintaro; she doesn't want to lose another anymore. What a great mother; lot of respect to her. Genki was restless, worried always, harsh at Gentaro and Momotaro on Kintaro, when he was a baby. Genki's health is very good now; shiny thick, clean fur, looks beautiful and relaxed. Kintaro resembles his mom's child hood days.
This story is so tender and at times heartbreaking. Genki has become the ultimate loving mother. She has such a gentle way about her. Her boys are her world and Momo is her protector. Gentaro was such a stinker when Kintaro was a baby but now, the boys are best friends. The last part of the video made me smile. The earthquake scene tells us how much Momo loves Genki and willing to help her. What a wonderful gorilla family.

It’s funny that the Silverback ( Momotaro ) who she loves and is the father of her two sons, happens to be the son of the female gorilla ( Momoko ) who took away her high status rank and her husband ( Biju ) away, and caused her a lot of misery and stress.
It’s funny how nature comes to a circle.
This is a great video that truly explains a lot about her, through her ups and down. Of all the gorilla mothers in zoos, she’s truly top of the list when it comes to raising her boys.
Let’s also give a lot of credit to Momotaro, he has also been a great help to her in raising those two boys.

Momotaro being the son of Momoka is an interesting turn in the story. She had to wait for HER silverback but she got him in the end.
Momoko didn't really take away her rank. The move to ueno was hard for genki and she stopped eating. She was a skeleton. A lot of people blame momoko, but momoko was very nice to genki. But, of course when momoko came she was a beautiful healthy female compared to genki. So biju lost interest in her. Also, she didn't loose her husband, they are gorillas, you can't treat them as humans.

Only time she had any rank is when she is the only female, which doesn't matter because the silverback doesn't recognize ranking in the females.

I feel so bad for Genki. All around she just didn’t have a good life after being moved from Mom. Then add she couldn’t feed Gentaro, it’s just so sad and had to feel overwhelming for her. I know the zoo did what was best for Gentaro and put him back as soon as they could. Genki is an amazing Mom and Dad is becoming an amazing Dad. Both had things happen to them that could have been detrimental, but that pushed through and now have two amazing babies. ❤️❤️

Thank you for telling Genki's story. I've read various sources during my search on her. She is one tough cookie who carries herself with grace. She has survived horrible, sad times but like a Phoenix she has risen and is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥!!!! I guess that's why I'm so defensive of her when others make fun of her weight and/or how much she eats. She deserves some pleasures.
I was glad to finally happy to see a pix of Hiromi (hard to find online). She was gorgeous, and Genki looks a lot like her. And I was happy to see the story of her and her babies, especially Gentaro. From the video it looks like she showed up everyday all day to check on him. Her treatment of the 2 sons has been the same--lots of love, cuddling, patience. I read the reason Genki hates blankets is because she associates them with having her babies removed.
Sorry for the long comment, but I'm always in awe of Queen Genki, and Momotaro who has stood by her thru the ups and downs.💖💖💖💖💖

This explains so much about Genki, why she acts the way she does. We think "oh she was way too harsh on Gentaro for wanting to play with Kintaro a lil early" and when she becomes very nervous when Gentaro and Momotaro get too excited, but she saw her how mother killed by Gon, became incredibly stressed enough to bite her fingers off, etc.

Genki has certainly had her share of challenges and heartache, but has persevered to become a loving, caring parent to two challenging sons. She enjoys spoiling Kintaro. I hope this gorilla family continues to flourish.

This is the most beautiful video, it brought tears to my eyes. I couldn't believe how Momotaro ran and protected Genki during the earthquake, absolutely amazing. I absolutely LOVE Genki and Momotaro and the boys and can't wait for the new baby in 2022 with all our fingers crossed.

Genki is my favourite gorilla in the world. Her emotions are so easy to read. I love how she is with her sons and the way she tells her husband off. Even when they try to mate, if he tries and doesn't succeed, she looks back at him as if to say that's it, that's all you got. lmao Her family are the most entertaining gorilla family and you can see the love between them. Prince Kintaro can do no wrong, such a sweetheart, so kind to his mom and family. Gentaro is so smart, just incredible to see him do his homework. Momotaro, big daddy, such a sweet silverback. The way he was when he first met his kids and how he plays with them, is pure love. I would love if Genki had another baby but I fear with the kids always around, that'll never happen. lol A little female next time would be great.
Hiromi, was beautiful. Her features are exquisite. She passed on those eyes to her daughter.

Gisel, so very beautifully done! Plus, outstanding information about Genki and both family histories, the zoo’s map and description, the excellent care, and the answers to so many questions. I think Kintaro at three looks more like baby Momo, and Gentaro more like Genki. It broke my heart to see her coming to the bars, so wanting Gentaro back. Genki barely has a tooth left in her head because of decades of being fed inappropriate grasses. Though I appreciate the explanation of some changes made by the zoo, it is still obvious the space is too small for a gorilla family of 4, 3 of them males. And the everyday grasses are still nutrition poor. My heart breaks for Genki.

Isn't that amazing. The reaction was quick and protective and Genki followed his instructions without hesitation. Personally, I might have argued with my husband about where the best place to stand is in that situation. 🤣

🇨🇦 I can certainly see that the zoo takes excellent care of this gorilla family. It's very good of them but I still don't understand why Momataro and Genki weren't released into the mountains? I think the people at the zoo mean well but does no one believe that mother nature has taken care of these wild animals long before humans? These animals are not meant to live in cages.

I think she is a beautiful Gorilla & has the most amazing capacity to love
She simply adores Kintaro with every fibre of her being & now i understand why
So many attempts at motherhood & she has been so desparate to be a mother yet she has suffered just as human mothers do when no babies appear or theres still birth or miscarriage no wonder she clung to Kintaro

Yes there's great affection between Beautiful Genki & that handsome husband of hers Momotaro.
I too feel such sadness when Gentaro is pushed away, there was one video where Genki pushed him hard & all he was doing was sitting quietly gazing adoringly at Genki but because Kintaro was just a few months old her protection of him was fierce
Anyway just after she pushes Gentaro he falls back onto his elbow & his other hand comes up to put across his eyes as if he was so grief stricken he cried tears
Oh dear dear, i was so cut up
I just wanted to hug Gentaro so much & he still adores his mum
Absolutely loves her so much
He doesnt take it out on Kintaro either, he adores his little brother & is so gentle & caring
Wanting to only be a part of his mum & Kintaro
I really love him & hope he soon get a his own wife & a bunch of fine sons & daughters
As some commenter said, Gentaro will make a brilliant dad
I hope he gets the love & affection he so readily gives out is returned to him when he gets his own family
The Momotaro family are my most favourite darling Gorilla family
So near to humans more than any other primate,
Such great personalities & characters, extremely clever & have such love & affection for each other
I still think Genki is the best mother of all the combined primates,( & compared to alot of human mothers who could learn alot from Genki) the looks in her eyes are utterly facinating & spend hours daily watching my favourite non human family on Earth.
Im even coming to Japan later in this year for a long stay & its mainly because i want to see my darling Momotaro every day.

I have my PhD in Primatology and I find having both parents of the lovely Genki kinda disturbing (my opinion sorry) probably why I didn't study Gorillas as I was more into the behavior patterns between the Macaque and Orangutans in Borneo and Sumatra. I absolutely love this video because of Genki! I always said she the matriarch of all matriarchs and hope her & Momotaro can have at least 1 more off spring because of her age and milk production. They really deserve a girl not only for the troop and the Zoo but for the species as a whole. I'm sure glad I got on TH-cam this morning because I find Genki really interesting to watch and observe. I seen her in real live a few years because before Kentaro was born and have been wondering how they have been doing since specially with COVID-19
