- As we really need something nice this Halloween (given the horror show 2020 has already been), here's something you've always wanted to see, whether you knew it or not. THE song from the short-lived Broadway version of "Dance of the Vampires" (if you're an 80s kid, you'll recognize it as something else :). It features Mandy Gonzalez and Michael Crawford. Enjoy!

In 1998 I attended the German version in Vienna and there is no comparison, the German version is so superior to the Broadway version that this version is painful to hear. There’s nothing like the original it’s like a veggie burger Vs a wagyu burger.

The problem is that the Broadway version uses pop singers. The music is by Jim Steinman is meant to be performed operatic ally preferably by real opera singers.

I saw this on Broadway with my Dad and my nephew. We laughed from start to finish. It was amazing.
Yeah I dug my nails into my friend’s leg throughout. One of the last of the great horribly delightful bad shows iMHO :)
I had a friend who was in the show on Broadway, so I was delighted to find a video of it on youtube. I never told them I saw it because I was so embarrassed for them.

It’s not supposed to be a comedy. Sure, the original has some funny moments, but overall, it’s supposed to be a tragedy.

@@scotthamp384 It’s a major point of content. Vampire musicals don’t last long on Broadway, even before “Dance of the Vampires.” Even if the show was not rewritten and starred Barton, chances are it would’ve still bombed.

I've done my research on this musical and it turns out Micheal Crawford only joined this musical in memory of his dear friend Steve Barton, who took his own life in 2001.
Steve Barton was very close to Micheal and when he was sick Steve covered for his role as Eric in the Phantom of the Opera.
So Micheal despite being 61 and not even having enough energy to walk up the stairs, sacrificed his health just to perform. It's easy to judge someone who has a history of being a diva but if you realize he's just another human who's struggling like the rest of us.
This musical was a disaster even before he got on board.
The producers, the writers and Jim Steinman were all at odds, they all wanted the musical to be something it wasn't.
The part about Michael taking over the show is a nasty reddit rumor that was started by either a joke or somebody that was jealous of Micheal. He might not look great here but the man has been working since he 17.
He is a trained opera singer, this was done 20 years ago, he's almost 90 now, he won't be with us much longer so all this moaning and groaning about misinformation, is going to be pointless very soon.
I personally love the man and I believe he has humbled himself after suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
He was a has been at this time, a low point in his life, so he literally had no control over what happened in this show.
He has a heart of gold, I didn't see it before but I do now. Don't judge people for the chapter you walked into, people are more than just one chapter, this Chapter happened 20 years ago.
Why not watch something new that you actually like?
I may be the only one who enjoyed the show in NY. A gift to see Michael Crawford.

With everything that went wrong, it essentially is. If you speak German: DeadBoyWalking made a really good video about everything that went wrong with Dance of the vampires.
The reason the US version is so messed up is because the German show is based off a film by Roman Polanski, a pedophile who fled the US & will be arrested if he ever returns, so the US version had to be totally different because obviously Polanski couldn’t have any claim to a show in a country he’s wanted for arrest in. This is what I remember from a video I watched about it a long time ago(feel free to kindly correct me if I’m wrong). I think it was on a channel called Vampire Reviews.

Take a look at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Polanski_sexual_abuse_case. And you will see that the allegations are partly true, although Polanski accepted a sentence, the judge in charge did not want to accept the agreement between the prosecution and the defense.

Michael should’ve reprised the phantom in Broadway instead of doing this mess. Easy choice. What was he thinking?

Man... seeing that count apoearing is such a turn off for me.... The american version is my less, less favorite version of my favorite musical. Like... Seriously... Why they put him in there? Wth??? Not only he does not pull that energy the german version does, but his voice is not as powerfull as well... im not liking it at all😐

This whole thing is a trainwreck.
First off, the audience is used to the song released in the 1980s, Bonnie Tyler's version. You can't get around that. You also can't get around the fact that the lyrics for that are better than whatever the hell this crap is.
Second, Crawford is too old and his voice is wrong for the part. He works better as the Phantom because it is so soft in quality and gentle with a few flashes of power. That won't work for Jim Steinman. You would need a 40 something year old actor/tenor to pull this off. Somebody who still has a little physical appeal left in him to explain "Sarah"'s attraction but who can switch on and off to show both sides of the character-including the ruthless side, the bestial side.
Third, it is Jim friggin' Steinman-where are the electric guitars?!!-PUT THEM BACK!! Rock opera is his jam. He wrote I Would Do Anything For Love and it took over a year for people to figure out the "But I won't do that" bit.
Fourth, plot: does not work well. It is supposed to be a spoof. In hindsight, it might have paid off to do it up straight, and refine the plot. Make the play less of a lampoon of old Hammer films and really go for it.
[Thinking in head] Chuck the whole "I am a helpless damsel in distress" thing and replace it with more of a sense of a girl being duped and lead to believe the mysterious dark man who visits her at night is a demon trying to hide under the guise of an angel; if you don't, it becomes too much like the Phantom of the Opera....and it is yet another boring bimbo too stupid and moo cow eyed to get on the next boat to Timbuktu where there are no opera houses.
Strengthen the resolve of Alfred to go in and fight for his girl; put her in the middle of a love triangle with one young man's love real and the other older man's motives far from pure....get deep into what a vampire really is. A creature of the night that is no longer human and cursed to wander the Earth as the living dead. A creature that possesses the gift of flight in the form of a bat, and other unnatural forms, like fog and mist. A being with the choice to completely maul and eat humans, but with a series of 3 bites, 3 feeds, can reproduce and spread his curse far and wide. Let the rules of the Bram Stoker universe apply, but add in, for an edge, what happens when a vampire bites a child. And let the audience scream when suddenly they seem to be crawling up and down the walls of the theatre.
In the middle of it all, let the professor be obsessed with proving that vampires exist. Still, somewhere, in a remote part of Europe, they exist. Let him be lured into a trap he barely survives. Let him be tricked into thinking he is an anthropologist of sorts. And let him pay the price for his mistakes.

Well make sure you watch this one before the much better German, and Russian versions. I've been a fan forever of this musical and this was such a disappointment, especially with the cast build up.

Just stumbled upon this and I'm genuinely shocked at how terrible this is. The words don't even flow with the melody, and the male singer is awful. The Polish version is on another level.

It is so odd, I can understand picking Crawford, since quite a few productions picked a former Phantom but it turns right in the other productions compared to this.

Mandy as Sarah is still quite good, but the way they decided to depict Krolock is horrible (not really the singers fault, more the directing decisions, the costume and the awful lyrics). Biggest mistake in this song was the decision to cram much of the "original" lyrics from the Bonny Tyler song, at least the refrain, into this, which has hardly anything to do with what they sing in the original German version and doesn't fit the characters at all. Steinman just reused this melody of his for the musical, it has nothing to do with the lyrics of "total eclipse of the heart". Yeah, I can see now why this version flopped on Broadway while the German musical has been a huge success in Europe.
It’s sadder than that: the depiction of Krolock was Crawford’s idea. He chose to play it goofy. He was hired largely for how good he played Phantom and instead chose to play it this way. Makes me sad.
It may interest you to know the "Tanz" libretto was written in English first, and the lyric you hear in this version of "Total Eclipse" is based on that one. So "Tanz" in English was incorporating these lyrics as well. "Tonight is what it means to be young" at the end on the other hand, no. They changed that for Broadway. If you hear the demo version of "Dance of the Vampires" in English, those are the "Tanz" lyrics.

I'm sorry i can't take Crawford serious as the count. Sure he has not the body he had at the prime of his musical career and i don't mean to bodyshame him. But the count was always depicted as tall and slender. Also the make up doesn't do him any justice either and accentuates any flaws

This looks and sounds absolutely terrible. I saw the show 4 times in Paris and it was truly amazing and a brilliant piece of theatre. Such a shame there's never been a good version in English....

For me, not really a fan of her here. It seems they lucked out on getting Michael for his name recognition. Mandy is obviously talented and attractive but her voice is very “bright” and just does not mesh well with Michael’s. It’s not their fault, of course.
@@codymays9943 well, I've heard Crawford sing with four other women, three of them having played Christine in POTO, and the one I don't like as a singer is his favorite Christine, Dale Kristien. The other two, Sarah Brightman and Mary D'Arcy, I thought matched him better. Even Mandy sounded better than Dale. I mean, to me, Dale sounded like a young girl when she sang

Well, I'm not an 80es kid - born in the 90s - but I still prefer Bonnie Tyler's version; Michael Crowford is a great man, but his singing is not so good

Jim Steinman did all the music for this show. If you like Bonnie then you’ll enjoy Jim’s other works too.
