    One of my favorite lines from the movie is when Donnie's mom comes to visit him in his room towards the end of the movie. Out of nowhere he says to her, "How does it feel to have a psycho for a son?" She simply replies, "It feels wonderful."
    Good answer.

      bigjonfaulkner That part always gets to me as well. It's like she learned to be PROUD of her son (especially since he was right about that whole Jim Cunningham motivational BS and the guy was a pedo creep). Plus that's the last time Donnie sees his mom in the Tangent Universe (before her plane crash), in the Regular universe the last time he sees her he calls her a bitch (which may add to her shock in the end seeing him dead, smoking, semi-calm while his sisters and dad are clearly in tears and upset). The part where we see Donnie being carted out under the white sheet and Maggie G. and Holmes Osbourne sobbing always gets to me and brings tears to my eyes along with the beautiful music (beautiful music is part of why this film is so great).

      Boss Rokstar V that's exactly the point they never met in real life. It's the memory left after the dream. She says she didn't know him but her expressions and waving hands to donnies mother explains it all. Scene explained everything without saying anything.

My friends found me sitting in front of the TV with my mouth wide open and my eyes red, this is a masterpiece, truly the best movie I've ever seen.

    Why does this film make me feel so depressed? I feel like it's not meant to make you cry but I am in tears right from when the jet engine falls onto Donnie's house. And i just can't seem to put my finger what exactly makes it so enthralling, what makes me get so caught up and moved by it. It truly is a piece of art that will remain one of the greatest movies ever made.

    As sad as this end scene is, the film wouldn't make sense without Donnie's death - it ties everything together. I love this film so much :)

    • @leonthesleepy
      @leonthesleepy 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, correct me if i'm wrong. Donnie was saved by the bunny, so that he could disrupt the new "Chaos apocalyptic" timeline right? And by doing so he had to get rid of the engine?
      If so, why kill himself? I mean, why did he transport the engine to his room?

    • @WispWarbler
      @WispWarbler 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      StrawberryRainPop To be honest, I have only seen this film once and so I'm not completely clued up on the whole time travel thing. I felt Donnie had to die to break the time loop, so that he couldn't shoot Frank and, hence, why Frank is seen living on after Donnie dies. There's also my idea that Donnie wanted to die in order to escape everything he hated about life.

    • @leonthesleepy
      @leonthesleepy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      WispWarbler That makes sense! Esp the last part, i think he was headed for destruction anyway, and he wanted to do some good.

    • @jesseseeberg-gordon7967
      @jesseseeberg-gordon7967 9 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      StrawberryrainPop Actually in the commentary Richard Kelly said that Donnie didn't have to die at the end. Notice how Frank beeps and drives away after he drops Donnie's sister off the first time, but in the second time beeps but stays to see what happens. The beeping was supposedly Frank warning Donnie to get out of bed, but he doesn't either because he thinks it was all a dream or just thought that there was something better after he died. Remember the quote "I hope that when the world comes to an end, I will be able to breathe a sigh of relief because there will be so much to look forward to".

    This movie explains the meaning of the word "Under-rated". Although it's central premise is built upon a cold, inhuman and cosmic theme of parallel universe, it still manages to infuse pathos and humanity in the story of Donnie. Amazing work by Richard Kelly. Certainly, one of the most tragic endings I have ever seen. I request those who dislike this movie to give it another chance.

    I think that the bunny (Frank's Suit and the bunny story of the English teacher) is a reference to the Easter bunny (which represents salvation and resurrection) albeit in a darker alternative. Easter is about the rebirth of Christ who saved human kind therefore Donnie, as the living receiver, acted as Jesus who will save the people in the parallel universe.

    I still get chills when watching this scene...I loved “Mad World” in the 80s and the haunting Jules version, and its perfect use here, is just heartbreakingly beautiful. Maggie Gyllenhaal’s acting in this scene kills me every single time. The absolute devastation on her face (love the detail of her makeup from her night out with Frank streaking down her face), the anger at the FAA officials, the incomprehensible loss...the look on her face just was such a punch in the gut. Brilliant work from both Gyllenhaals in this film!

    think about it this way.
    1) Donnie did know the plane part was going to collapse on him, he could of avoid it and actually live, but that will just make a loop and make him repeat the cycle ( the alternate live he just lived)
    2) Donnie knew what would of happend those 28 days, but he was scared to actually try and do the things he did in the alternate world. remeber the 2 principles FEAR and LOVE. he sacrificed himself for LOVE on his girl, but in FEAR to keep living on and finding out what will happend with his life. as he did state no one knows.
    PS: remember how he talked about the rabbit knowing the future and how he didnt fear death? welp guess who was the rabbit all along..

    It reminds me of the Matrix trilogy, when the oracle tells neo that he already made the choice, he just has to understand it. I think Donnie already made his choice, the tangent universe was how he came to understand the choice he made. He could see his path so he could change what would occur.

    This is one of the most complex, intelligent, and well written movies ever made. The ending was exceptional, and wrapped up the movie so well. Sub consciously he knows what happened like everyone except for Donnie; he knows everything that happened, and he chose to die to save the universe from being destroyed. I don’t think you can truly appreciate the genius of this movie until you understand the tangent universe theories. That’s what the director was getting across. I can go on for days.

    I know two mothers that have lost their sons, and is the most terrible thing a woman can go through, it's just indescribably, and this movie is just a temporary relief for your life, is just a fantasy, reality is that pain won't go unless you deliver your pain to GOD, God bless you

    After all this time from watching the movie and not getting it... now I fianlly get it. It wasn't planned. I was just watching Vampire Diaries and the song just got me crazy, so I searched, found the song, I liked it, and finally brought me to this ending of Donnie Darko, which I finally understood...

    I always felt like the ending where donnie died was reality. The whole movies we see is a dream where we see all of these characters wake up from simultaneously. It's one of those dreams that everybody has and never forgets, but who knows if it's ever connected to anybody else. Just my theory

    I was wondering the same thing.
    However I can answer the other two - He's laughing because he's just woken up from what he thinks is a dream in which he saved the world, but the feelings are real and overwhelming. And they wave to one another because they all have a faint remembrance of one another. It's like the thoughts and feelings from the tangent universe have left an imprint on all the characters.

    A decade has passed, and there are fresh posts to this board. I love it. Spoiler Alert !!
    The "Dream Sequence" doestn't actually tie everything together. But there are many clues there. Such as Frank's "artifact". The actual one, not the halloween Costume we see him in most of the film. Donnie's quest to find the path to God. Being in School. but alone. "The Dreams in which I am Dieing are the Best" with his Laughter b4 he calls the engine to him. Chen's subtle smile. There is so much here
