I used to work with a German fellow who had worked in tank maintenance & recovery in the east, he had one of those tracked motorcycle things fall on him, it crushed his right leg, which got him out of the war. Remarkable man. Great video as usual.
The fact that his newsreel is in color makes it special. It was such a rarity for anything to be filmed in color in the 1940s - especially during the war. The color tones appear different, and probably better, than film that has been colorized from a black and white print.
German film companies closely tracked the developments in the USA. Also, ther French had been tinkering with single-strip colour fim sinc eteh early 20th century..I mention "single strip" because techniques like "Technicolor" use special cameras the run THREE synchronizes strips of 35mm film. Each strip gets a different image via a beam-splitter and precision filters. Thus you end up with THREE different but complementary, negatives. Kodak in the US and Agfa and others in Europe came out with "single-strip color reversal film in the late 192-'s / early 1930's The US Kodak model was the famous but now sadly-defunct "Kodachrome. This was pretty amazing stuff because the film itself contained its own "color filters and the deal was that the actual color dyes were added at the Kodak lab, thus guaranteeing the best color rendition and PERMANENCE. Hence Kodachrome's reputation for excellent, even "vivid" color palette. The Germans did a whole "production package" deal, with Arri developing the amazing 16mm Arriflex "S", primarily for the German armed forces. This was the first movie camera that combined a true "reflex" view-finder with a body form that was ergonomic to the point that it was (and remains) capable of being held steadily in one hand; handy if you are bouncing around on a torpedo boat or in a tank going cross-country. Once the color film from the camera was processed, it was a simple matter to make color and monochrome copies, in both 16mm and 35mm. In the US, it was the US Navy that did a LOT of general and actual combat filming in color; hence the same stock color shots keep turning up in documentaries and feature films. The Army had different priorities and budget=ts, often shooting in monochrome 35mm. If you see any actual color film of US actions in Europe from 2944 onward, it is probably lifted from the "home-movies" of George Stevens, who took his private 16mm camera to war "just because". There is a book covering this, titled; "George Stevens ; From D-Day to Berlin" Worth finding a copy, if you can. Steven's son discovered a large stash of cans of processed 16mm film in his father's attic after he passed away. Probably all over the internet by now.

Interesting to see at 16:36 the Savoia-Marchetti SM.82 in German livery. Wiki check says “between 1942 and Spring 1943, FliegerTransportGruppe "Savoia" operated 100 Savoia-Marchettis. After September 1943, SIAI kept on producing SM.82 for Luftwaffe, delivering 299 planes. Other Marsupiali were captured after the 8 September armistice.”
I hope people now understand that German soldiers were not Nazis. They were just soldiers and couldn't choose their fate. The stupid and fat type of war films of the 50s and 60s is stupid propaganda. Pray that American and British soldiers do not have to go through what the German soldiers experienced on the Eastern Front.
You are absolutely right. The German soldier mainly fought for the same reasons American GIs fought in Vietnam: They were ordered to and there was no legal alternative. The expression of Nazi (= member of the NSDAP) for German soldiers in general is misleading. The following must be said. The law of defense of 1935 states in § 26 (Politics in the Wehrmacht): (1) „The soldiers are not allowed to engage in political activity. Membership of the NSDAP or one of its affiliated associations is suspended for the duration of active military service.“ That wasn‘t changed until late 1944.
I would not have been born as a German if my dad had not been taken prisoner of war by the Americans in 1944 when he was 18 years old. The prison camp was near Marseilles in southern France. He only had kitchen duties, some also drove trucks. The Americans didn't have enough drivers because they were all needed at the front. There was probably a soldier as a companion there too anyway better if in touch with French civilians. Nobody wanted to escape the camp anyway. The POWs were also able to write letters home via the Red Cross. The commanding guard Sgt often said don't sign with the Foreign Legion. The French will then send you to Indochina (Vietnam) or Africa. You don't know what jungle war means. Dad was sent home in the fall of 1945. My grandparents needed daddy for the harvest. Since that time he smoked Gold Dollar Cigarettes. Died in 2010 at the age of 84. Btw there were German war crimes but afaik behind the easter front lines and secret commands.
Mil gracias...
