I been chasing this one a while. I had passed on several 30s D-D18s because of so many repairs and wear. With the USA Luthier built collection I had decided to just enjoy. I finally caught up with the guitar. Thanks to the seller. John Arnold for giving me the courage. Even then it had to sound way above average and that was a decision that I had to make, that was the easiest part.....Thank you Shawn for confirming its ability to perform in the hands of a master player that I am proud to call you my friend......I hope everyone enjoys these videos as much as I do.....play on!

You make them all sound great, but there's just something in those old ones that cannot quite be replicated in a brand new instrument. I love my new guitars, but I pick up one of my old guitars and it's just different. Blessed to be able have some great guitars, old and new. This one is certainly a fine example of why the 30's guitars are so sought after.
@@vernonyates8408 man you are right about that. I’m amazed at what modern builders are able to come up with as soon as something is strung up, but unlike us human beings, time is definitely on the side of a guitar, and age can’t be replaced or replicated.

At least once in your life its good to play something spectacular, even if just for future reference. Mine was in 1973, still in high school. I played a 1938 Martin D-28, fresh out of the shop with a full body french polish. No, it didn’t have a huge fat neck. It did have treble notes that glistened, and it wasn’t the least bit woofy. It filled up the room even at low volume, just a treat to play it. The price was $3,000.

It was also one of the cleanest 28s that I have seen to date; it came out of a collection, and was only $10,000 lol. if it were on the market now, it would easily go for 20 times the price, and would probably go pretty quick.

@@Chris-pb4jo god bless you my brother, it is a pleasure to play these kind of things! The only time I ever started to buy a 37, I went to look at it, and man it was as rough as could be. Most of the finish was gone, or at least partially worn away, but that didn’t bother me any, I just wanted to play the thing I didn’t care about the cosmetics. The end pin had been broken off even with the guitar, and it only had one small repaired crack. I thought with having so much going on with the cosmetically, someone must have played it a lot and it would sound great. It ranked among the worst guitars that I had played lol. Talk about a disappointed man, and a hard lesson on how all of them aren’t created equal. 😂

Every person who plays guitar should be so lucky as to have a chance to hold and play something like this once in their life. Obviously, this one is way out of most people’s ability to afford it, and I have no idea what would be asked for this, which I get, but also seems sad. This is is an amazing almost holy sounding guitar. Lucky you to get to play it, but maybe not so lucky you because you know you have to give it back.

I never say anything that I feel like would harm someone’s business, but since you brought it up, I think baking wood is one of the worst ideas come up with in this century in the Guitar world. Nine times out of 10 I hate those guitars, but I tried to be professional and kind about it. However, I would sure never own one for myself, because it comes nowhere close to making it sound like an old one.
That D-18 is loud. Of those vintage instruments I've played that I've enjoyed, they were all especially articulate and balanced from the low E to the high E. I've found this quality in a few newer guitars that made them all the more sweet to play. Thank you for posting this video.

Well, typically speaking, although sometimes it does verie, I do Bert and the Calf on the intro, which is original, followed by other original stuff, purple rain by Prince, Tennessee waltz, country roads, whiskey before breakfast, let me touch you for a while by Alison Krauss, but everything else is original.
Don't know wat the piece was you was playing their I've heard it before but it was absolutely beautiful on that guitar I think martins are overated most of the time but that guitar was definitely built by a craftsman.
@@billystephens9255 you are correct, they had several great craftsman in the factory back then, all of them, or at least most of them were so highly skilled that it is amazing.
I feel these new martins which I've played many of em don't have no soul their just hollow feeling to me I think martin bred the soul out of em with machines back in the day one martin one Luthier from start to finish but sadly no more of that make em fast and get them shipped out the door thxs enjoy your videos.
