For the ninth episode of Creepy Moments, the featured game is a farming simulator. how could a farming game possibly instill any kind of fear? Well, let me show you how!

So remember kids, if you buy something expensive with your hard earned money, everyone will hate you irrationally until you get rid of it. Seriously though, I don't really understand why the entire town would despise you for buying the best lumber. It is especially bad that there is no warning so you can waste all of that money and then have to throw it away because the town gets jealous very easily.
According to another comment, they only get peeved if you let one of your animals die. I assume as a sort of "Oh, you can't be bothered to take care of your livestock, but you'll gladly buy yourself a log-shaped hunk of gold?" thing. Lub Lub probably been a bit more clear about it, but since he did mention the animals can die, I reckon it was a case of catching the Checkhov's Gun.
COCONUT GUN Oh okay. Still doesn't make a ton of since it makes it seem like the towns folk are so obsessed with your life that they not only routinely check your farm while you sleep, but also keep track of your animals and when and how they die.

Simaginary Friend Okay so the game does mention it... on the TV which I hardly ever use in a Harvest Moon game except for the weather. Still seems unfair.
This event reflects a part of Japanese culture quite well. They're mostly humble people that don't flaunt wealth of success. The success of one person is the success of the group. The people in Mineral town are all struggling in their own ways, and for you to senselessly flaunt your wealth with something so wasteful, it really offends them. So it makes sense. But that's tough shit to put in a kids game, tbh.
They should have had some paint or something to make Golden Lumber not offend the townsfolk.

But be fair, circlejerking and bullying is one major case in Japan and this kinda reflects it, like having an outstanding grade in school and you might end up having the entire class surround your table and say "Don't get to cocky you little shit".
Japanese are certainly humble people but when they are mad, they are really crazy mad about it.
I thought you were going to mention the Kappa. For those who don't know it: If you enter your house at exactly 12AM and check the mirror repeatedly, the Kappa will briefly appear as your reflection and disappear in a flash, then there will be a loud noise outside your home (loud enough that even your character gets surprised and looks around). Nothing else happens... Thankfully.

I don't get it, I understand that if you steal everyone start calling you THIEF, it's a lesson for you, "Don't steal!" But why every single person should insult you for something that you bought with YOUR money and put in YOUR farm?!

Harvest Moon is notorious for having many of their NPCs be unforgivably rude shits. I've always been frustrated with gift-giving and constantly have to look up the wiki in order to find out who likes what. Most of the older games give you absolutely no clue what certain NPCs like and even the newer ones are annoyingly cryptic at times. They throw a fit if you give them a gift they don't like instead of refusing to take it like a normal person. I know the whole point of giving gifts is to increase heart points faster than just talking but do they have to be so bitchy about it?

Well because back in the day we weren't assisted players, in FPS games we had to find a medikit to heal and now you just have to cover for a while and you're good to go again. Exemple: Metal gear solid 1 = Rations to heal, MGS5: TPP = don't take damage for X second then you heal. In HM it's like IRL, you can't look up a guide to know what people loves what so you had to try multiple time in order to find what gift someone loves and what gifts you should avoid.

You can't. If they even have a line of dialogue mentioning something they like, it's random if you actually wind up seeing it. You have to either use trial and error or look up the wiki, like I said.
Yeah, I could say it's not so much _"Friends of Mineral Town"_ as _"Assholes of Mineral Town"_. Especially when literally everyone in the town come to your house to scream that they hate you for having a nice fence, and then in the same day say how much they need you and your farm, despite peppering their dialogue with insulting names directed at you. If there was an option to, just upping sticks and letting those two-faced scumbags rot would be good.

Eh, what to expect from people unable to grow their own food, their jealous of you from the VERY beginning of the game, that's why they check on your animal, trying to dig out the tiniest bit of dirt on you, just to rub your face with it when the time come (I bet they have a "moron signal" hidden in the mayor's house). When Git say taht there was an other way to escae than suicide, I though that it was possible to burn the village to the ground for more farmland and use the corpse of the villagers to make food for your crop.

dont quote me here but if my memory is good you can have the last laugh in some games go to the harvest festival and drop a lv 100 poison mushroom in the pot and enjoy the credits even if it dosnt work in some games its just fun to ruin the events when you can for fun try dropimng anything that dosnt sound good in the soup and use your imagnaition

The Golden Lumber can be obtained from the Mayor as well, as a reward for gathering a rare item for him before 7 PM on the day he asks you. It seems kinda silly that he hates you for showing off something HE gave you.

I thought it was neat that this game had a "Don't be greedy" lesson, but it seriously wasn't done right. The only thing this taught me is that if you become a big success in your work, people will hate you because you're a success and wants you to get rid of your stuff you worked hard for.
Agree the way this game puts this hate to the golden lumber isn't done right. They should of aleast done this with you buying the golden lumber and everything would be normal but if you like let your animales die by sickness or never gift your wife stuff etc then the town should hate on you for making stupid errors but have the money to buy a lumber made of gold.

lampgirl100 actually you can do that in Harvest Moon Ds and DS cute having golden lumber as the material to build your basements, bathroom and other buildings but mayor Thomas same mayor that of mineral town who hates a piece of golden lumber fence won't say anything about you having a golden barn etc. He seems perfectly fine even if your basement is made of golden lumber like I don't get it you have a shimmering gold barn/coop/silo basement/bathroom all the sheds etc. And he dosent say anything but put one as fence and he goes ape shit

In this game, if you don't make sure you will have enough money to cure every animal once they get sick, you shouldn't even get one. When I first played FOMT I got myself a chicken at the start of the game, which died 2 weeks later because I didn't have the money to cure it's illness.

They actually do that in Harvest Moon? That's like if in Animal Crossing if you got the King's Crown item, (the most expensive item in the whole game) all of your animals hated you until you sold it or buried it. And then the next day even Tortimer hated you for it.

I think the reason also could be, that you don't buy stuff to help your animals, BUT instead waste money to get an overpriced piece of golden lumber. They treat you like you should care better for your animals instead of paying money to get lumber.

It happened to me when I cheated the Harvest Goddess's Minigame where I got the Gold Lumber.
What's more ironic that if you play harvest moon ds or Ds cute the mayor of mineral town mayor Thomas is responsible for your shipment in that game and he's perfectly fine if you own a frikin barn or any buildings made out of golden lumber but can't tolerate a single golden lumber as a fence

Imagine an ending in the game where the player character eventually gets tired of all the berating he/she has for owning the golden lumber that she secretly buys tons of golden lumbers and places all of them in every other characters home overnight. When all the villages wake up to the sight of everyone having golden lumbers except the player character, everybody constantly argues with each other, eventually turning into a full-scale riot. As the chaos ends and everybody's lives are in ruin, the player character is shown moving to a new town while Bob Dylan's 'Like a Rolling Stone' plays in the credits.

Wow....I didn't even know HM could get THAT dark (and I played HM DS, which is really more dark to the player than the character. I could never get into A Wonderful Life though).
but of all scenes, that was SO messed up, I was like "Wait...WHAT!?" Seriously, you kill a Cow and people are all, "Well that sucks...try to prevent it from happening again." but you buy Golden Lumber and they're all "See you 6 feet under as your soul descends to the netherworld!" Hehe, given the things you can do in other games without the towns people caring, this one is almost funny (You've seen how to marry the Witch in HMDS right? They can still forgive you after that). OH and on top of that, the SAME MAYOR Thomas gives you Gold Lumber as a PRIZE for giving him an item to win some contest in DS. I guess Flower Bud Village is less condescending than Mineral Town.You can poison those fools for 5 years straight and the just look at you funny for a day.

It is a game mechanism yo prevent cheating/hacking to get a lot of money. As you know that Golden Lumber is most expensive thing in the game, if u can buy it, the game probably sues u for cheating
