  • Chimney repair - I show how I repaired the top of a chimney that was being changed from wood burning to gas, how i cut the flue and some old school techniques of cutting flues, also added in a block chimney that just needed some outside patching, this is part 5 of how I repair chimneys, all my videos are my ways and ideas, I always recommend that folks doing their own repairs to consult professional help. www.amazon.com/shop/mikehaduck

Great Work Mike! My father loved repair jobs. He would always say "this is our bread and butter" Regarding his Mason trade, I honestly believe he enjoyed repairs more. There were times I was blown away on the things he fixed! He being from the Old school, my Dad could do wonders with a Brick hammer. "Step back!" as he would say! He always found a good way to repair things. Awesome Video's! Thank You for sharing! To this day, my Dad says he misses it, good times.

This is a very informative video Mike. Could you please tell me how much of the clay pipe can protrude above the mortar cap ?? Would a 22 inches be to high for the chimney Sir ??? Thanks for your information and knowledge you give away freely. Thanks again Mike, you ROCK !!!!

I worked for a chimney sweep for many years. We also installed chimney caps.
So I can tell you this.
A multi flue cap is the best. It covers the entire crown. The normal height of one is 8, 10, and 12 inches. 10 seems to be ideal. So clay liners need about 4 or 5 inches of clearance. Depends on your local codes. Most states I think are about the same. But check anyway. Thus a 5 inch high flue needs a 10 inch high cap.
If you want single flue caps, the height can obviously be much higher, but can be cut if they're already installed to accommodate a multi flue cap. Without a cap, the chimney will deteriorate much faster especially in the snowy states.
      Hope that helped a bit.

Mike, do you just stack the flue tile dry and fill in around it or do you mortar them together before filling in around the sides? Thanks, another great video.

    • @MikeHaduck
      @MikeHaduck  8 ปีที่แล้ว

they have this flue compound that we were told we were suppose to use, and many times I did, but I never seen a difference when I tore them down, and I will not build a new chimney, everything is going to stainless steel. only repairs, and when I repair them I always suggest they install a chimney liner, i hope it helps, thanks mike

Hi Mike, I have to put a new crown on my cobblestone chimney, very similar to the one done in your video. Similar climate, in the northeast also. I got both Quikrete commercial mortar type S, and Quikrete commercial crack resistant concrete mix. Which should i use for the top row repointing and cap? Thank you for your videos, they are a trasure trove of info for a first time homeowner!

    • @MikeHaduck

The concrete mix has stones in it which is no good for laying brick, I can't explain what to do unless I was there to see it but the other videos in the playlist should help, thanks Mike

If someone has a chimney fire, that means there had to have been an excessive creosote buildup. Thus the homeowners fault.
The liner could also come crashing down with or without fill.
Thus people need to have their liners swept by a professional on a timely manner. That depends on how much or how old or neglected the chimney is.
I've seen old 150 year old homes with less creosote buildup in fireplace flues than 50 year old homes.
I've certainly seen enough of that crap. I was a chimney sweep for many years.

Hi Dave, every one gives a different opinion on this, but I usually use "s" mortar which contains portland, everything depends on the situation and what your trying to achieve, and the area of the country you live in I hope it helps, mike

Mike Haduck Masonry, thanks Mike for your quick reply, actually there’s a bit more damage than the one in your video but not beyond repair.....it’s in the attic...so no one will ever see it, so appearance isn’t a problem...I’m after 100% strength...I was thinking maybe some Portland with a bit of aggregate and mesh cut to shape....not a bad idea maybe ?

Mike did the cement on the very top used to shrinkage crack like this back in the day, or is the "new" technique easier because you just skim it after the cracking? I always wanted to experiment with a very dry cement mix but haven't gotten to yet. I have used fiber reinforced with good luck that way.

Hey mike im grinding & tuck pointing a stone chimney now & some of the stone are falling out cause the mortar is disintegrated behind the stone & turned to dust & theres a big hole going down between the flue & the stone. When i put mortar in it just keeps falling down the hole, what could i do to plug up that hole? I was thinking of screwing a wire mesh to the flue & bending it so i could put the mortar on it & it wont drop down the hole. What are our thoughts & ideas? Oh and ive tried plugging it with pieces of brick & stone & mortar but it just keeps falling down from gravity. Thanx

Hi Mike when you said you used rich Portland on the crack is that the same 3 to 1 mix you used before or a different mix. Also my single flue block has some hair line cracks in the mortor where the mortor meets the block. other than that the mortor is fine. Should I cut it out with the diamond blade. Or just fill it with portland. Thanks

Someone caulked the cracks & actually put spray foam in the bad joints & thats why the mortar turned to dust i told the owner. The chimney is going to have to be rebuilt from the roofline & up but for now owner just wants it pointed up but even some of the joints have big holes in them to whete when i keep putting mortar in it just keeps going in & falling down behind the stone so i just need help figuring out how to do it without going through a bunch of mortar & time to try & fill those joints. Thanx

Too bad i couldnt send u a picture. Basically i thought there would be brick around the flue going up the whole chimney yhen the stone around it but there isnt any brick just open space between the flue& the stone cause the extra mortar crumbled & turned to dust from laying the stone back when they built it. So when i replace the couple stone that are bad & tuck point it theres nothing to hold the mortar up from falling in that empty space between the flue & the back of the stone. When i would throw mortar & pieces of filler stone&brick in where the 2inch thick piece of stone came out of, the mortar would drop all the way down the chimney. Its basically hollow between the stone & the flue. I thought about using backer rod for the joints that are washed out so the mortar just doesnt keep falling in. But where i gotta replace the stone the gap next to the flue is way to big for the backer rod that's why i thought screwing mesh to the flue then bending it at 90° so it holds up the mortar then i would b able to push the 2inch stone back in against the mortar. I know u would have to see it to understand but im trying explain best i can. Thanx
