While some argue that Bob's techniques are too simple and don't allow much artistic development, I feel that bob's purpose in his paintings is to show that the threshold to good, clean, and fun painting is relatively easy and that once you past that threshold the canvas is now your oyster.

In which case, simple is better. We're not after originality.:) Lets not forget, Bob was making more $$ selling paintings at lunch than from the military. :) Of course, efforts at home will take a good few hours, as probably won't have 17 of each brush clean, and you haven't done that painting at least three times before/during the show :). I've never gotten under 2.5 hours yet. Much rewinding and playing ahead. Practice clouds and waves.
And cabins.
For a newbie, I wouldn't worry. It's not going to be that good starting out, or maybe they'll find waves or clouds tough, so they'll improvise. That's what I did and I've only done 2 oils ever so far. The idea of cleaning oils with some miracle soap or anything not flammable (Turpenoid, odorless paint thinner or Gamsol is a lie. For me, at least...just kills your brushes)

I don't think any of us are out to be technical painters. I paint for the enjoyment. Bob's style is easy for anyone that wants to try it. I use a lot of what he does, but I use my own also. The whole idea is to paint something that I like looking at. My painting is for ME. If you like it...great. If not...not my problem. I paint for me. I love making something come alive in color. I miss Bob Ross.

The show is called "The joy of painting" not "The pain of painting!"
Bob gets really deep halfway through the video. No war, no pain. Just the world the way it should be. The very essence of art itself. Portraying the world through your own sentiments. Also, so far this is the only time (I think) that Bob mentions his time in the army.

It makes me happy to know that so many young people have found Bob and get the same joy that I did when I used to watch him in my youth (and now). I think I was 14 when he started painting on tv and I was instantly mesmerized.
When he passed away I was devastated. It was almost as if losing a family member as he had been a part of my life for over a decade.
Can you imagine if he was still painting today? In this video he said he’s painted probably 20,000 paintings. He would probably have surpassed 75,000 or more but more importantly, we’d have been able to have him in our lives for so much longer.
I don’t think any artist (of any kind) has affected people emotionally as much as Bob ❤️❤️ and the nuggets of philosophical insights that he brought out metaphorically with his teaching are timeless.
He has helped me to overcome many obstacles with his wise words & beautiful paintings😌

Never sold a painting, only donated them to charities or public TV stations. Also never got paid for the shows he did. His payment came through selling his products, which have done VERY well over the years, yet he was never in it for the money or fame. Good man through and through
I know there are so many hyper-realistic painter on youtube but bob is the original and his intention is quite simple... He just want to teach us how to paint the simple way and be happy while doing it.
His greatness as an artist is such that he can paint a most wonderful skyline but instead of just ending it there he suddenly covers much of that colorful serene sky with trees, water, hills , etc. that captures, in the end, what HE intended to convey as the painting's purpose or theme. In the end , the finished product is almost always a truly beautiful and outstanding painting. He's very talented.
Bob is like Valium, for my stress and anxiety. I always feel soothed by the end of his show. Soothed and in awe! Such a very gentle soul.

I've been painting for years. And find it very fun ,relaxing. I think that is what Bob was trying to show. You see as a kid I was told I could not paint. That I was no good . But in my adult years I have found joy it painting. And I have proven that I am good enough.. I'm a happy accident 🙂 that paints happy and sometimes mysterious painting...

Man, he REALLY got wild this episode. Every idea was revolutionary for him, every stroke a fun Lord of the Rings level adventure. He was practically jumping in place the whole episode!

I've done 2 oils so far. Took about 2.5 hours each.
My mistakes: Not springing f or odorless paint thinner. He was right. Regular "will drive you out of the house."
Not buying several of each inexpensive brush. (Hair, not nylon).
Not practicing ahead of time: clouds, cabins, waves, trees.
Learned you can pull paint off canvas with a paper towel. It will pull the shine off, too.
Buy a very stable H frame easel. There's a reason the cheap ones are 20.00 (they tend to not hold up well or not hold your canvas up)
Yeah, you'll need flammable solvents. I've yet to see water work, myself.
If anyone ever went to heaven, it's Bob.
I was driving the other day and looked up at the sky and saw these colours and started saying alizeran and thalo blue...etc...now I see nature in Bob Ross's eye's and colour palette..

Once you learn the wet on wet technique, you can do as Bob always said, create your own world on the canvas, just the way you want it. He did not teach us to copy what he did. He taught the technique.
