  • The Fujian province of China gave birth to some of the more popular Kung Fu styles around the world. This area was the birthplace of the famous 5 ancestor styles, The Damo System, The Lohan System, The Taizu System, The Monkey System and the White Crane System. One thing in common with most of the Kung Fu systems originating from the Minnan region of China is the importance placed on the San Zhan or Sum Chien form.
The South Shaolin systems from Fujian Province teach a student the San Zhan form at the start of their training journey. San Zhan works on a concept called the three treasures of man; the body, the mind and the spirit. Through practising this form diligently a student is able to strengthen their muscles, joints, tendons and sinews, increasing their elasticity and strength. This way, coiling power can be stored and released into an opponent with devastating effect. This strengthening also serves to condition and toughen up the exterior of the practitioner, allowing them to take a lot of impact without serious damage.
This is a breakdown of our version from the Tiger Crane Combination. This was done primarily for our students but it may be of interest to other Kung Fu practitioners.

Cant tell you how grateful I am that you put this video out with great explanations. I've not long started tiger crane and we went into lockdown soon after. As we know, resources for our art are few and far between. I will use this video to help me practice. Thanks again 🙏🏻

Thankyou so much for sharing this. How does 'your' system relate to Shuang Yang? From what I've seen on your channel, it isn't so much into punching, more slapping perhaps? And does it have a staff form? There's a brief shot of Kristina using a medium length stick -- at least shorter than a bo. My interest is in sticks. I'm too old to start from scratch and roll about on the ground for the sake of being martial. So much of what I see on your channel reminds me of Filipino Eschima/Kali. While that system develops the footwork and elbow and wrist work, it is not core focused on the thoracic region. All that White (& Whooping) Crane stuff is a surprise for someone who started studying Jojutsu. Kali also has open hand slaps -- I think that is sensible combat. (I'm based in Brisbane, Australia. )

Hi Dave, thank you for your comment. The two systems that I teach are Fujian Tiger Crane Combination (Which is basically White Crane with a flavour of Taizu), and Shuang Yang, which is a Southern Shaolin White Crane Soft Fist. We have the full range of Shaolin Weapons, the first one being a staff cut down to eyebrow eye height of the practitioner. We also have the full range of strikes, open hand, punch etc. But I find in sparring without equipment it is safer to slap lightly then use punching.

Seem like that, Uechiryu's San Zhan mainly on Open hand but mine is Gojuryu which mainly on close hand.

Different traditions have different methods of internal cultivation so the best thing to do is ask your current teacher their opinion on cross training. They will be able to best guide you.
