      I’m quite familiar with Jehovah’s Witnesses. When I was younger and had more time, I used to enjoy inviting them in for discussions. I would challenge them with questions they couldn’t answer, which often led to them saying, “We’ll need to consult our elders.” Interestingly, they never returned! No, I haven’t read the book you mentioned.

    I have to say that while you have given plenty of signs of cult schools, unfortunately some of them can be a lot more subtle than that. Certainly for me, when I started in my ex Kung Fu teacher's beginner lessons, that was different from when I started going to the forms lessons and next level up lessons. I think he was really good at keeping the beginner beginners separate from the rest, then once you had passed your basic test, (this is how it worked with me anyway), he'd got you reassured this was a nice accepting place and he was a lovely person, then the difficulties kicked in once you started with the wider group. He was different when I moved up a level of lesson, but by then I was hooked on learning Choy Li Fut, and he'd got me hooked on him. I have made a number of videos where I talk about what has happened both with him and his former Kung Fu teacher. The playlist "Choy Li Fut Code of Conduct" is where most of that is, but there are other videos, such as the videos I made about his video where he fakes doing horse stance for nearly ten minutes, and then more recently an issue where after I started going to Capoeira lessons, a woman came along who seemed quite nice and friendly, but turned out to be living with a man who has been stalking me on behalf of my ex Kung Fu teacher for years. His name is Niel Willcott, but he now has erased his name from his website and TH-cam channel and calls himself Lohan Sifu. He calls himself that because he believes he is a reincarnation of Lohan, who according to our mythological history, created the exercises that subsequently became Kung Fu. I did manage to convince his students to mostly have nothing to do with him any more, so he hasn't taught group lessons for years, even before COVID, although he still offers private lessons. His weirdness about this stuff has become more obvious online since.

      @ShkarSharif-KFZ it's on TH-cam. I ask you because they don't allow crosstraining in other martial-arts. They don't like stealing students away from other schools. Or vice versa. Plus, you aren't allowed to look at the handbook because everything is trademarked. And I guess they have had problems before with other schools trying to steal their material. So if you get a chance, look it up, please. And let me know what you think. Oh, I forgot to mention that it's a hybrid system. 80% traditional karate, 20% original stuff. It includes karate, boxing , savate, wrestling, and fencing. It also teaches self-defense, verbal, and physical. Self-awareness,sparring, and weapons. Weapons include nunchaku, yawara stick, staff, escrima sticks, sai, sword, and some others I can't remember. They call themselves Chinese Karate because everyone knows karate. So far, the karate they have been teaching me is similar to American Kenpo. Like Ed Parker or tracy kenpo.

    Another sign that you are in a martial arts cult is that you dont tell your teacher that he has a sword through his head when he has a sword running through his head... just joking (kinda)... but in all seriousness, this is well though out and well communicated, thank you - there is a common thread of isolation due to insecurity - possibly because the cult's system has become a house of cards waiting to come tumbling down, and their licence to print money (or at least take it off their students for the rest if their lives) will be revoked!

    This has happened to me twice already, I joined traditional Chinese wushu schools, after a few years I reached the level of instructor and only then everything became obvious to me. At such moments, the leader's inability to trust a new significant person with the system of this school becomes clearly expressed, interference in social activity begins (prevention of contacts with other schools, third-party seminars, competitions). The leaders of such schools receive some status in various ways and then stop developing themselves and isolate themselves from external influence, forming a cult. I think it is worth noting an important point - people who go to these cults also have similar distortions as the leaders (lack of trust or similar fears) or they want to be in the company of such a powerful person and trust the "only right" path Thank you very much for raising this topic, It is not something that should be kept silent about

    So i have been doing different martial arts for almost 30 years now. And i have found the cult like behaviour is the worst in chinese martial arts. I find the teachers, particularly the ones from china, claim to have a very special chi power from training the system, one so deadly they cant really demonstrate in a sparring match or real fight. A lot of made up stories about being in street fights or underground challenge matches, and taking the crap out of all other styles or even other teachers of the same style, saying they dont have the correct lineage and teaching. I trained in one style in london a southern chinese system, all they do in a class is a few exercises, a special kind of press up, a grinding arm exercise and some 2 man sets that work on strength. Apparently training these for years gives you "shock power" so when you hit someone they will going flying back. They will never spar or try and test there skills against others. Of course training any martial art will give you some skill and strength. But not some amazing abilities to the levels these guys claim. And its followers never question or see if if this training actually works, so carry on blindly

      I think I know the school that you are describing. If it was the one in Mile end that moved to Islington , I trained there too for a few years but the school collapsed. I remember all the politics back in the '90's and agree there was a lot of arguments about lineage etc the Sifu ( I believe he is a shaolin monk now) loved winding people up so much by writing articles in Combat magazine , they would come down for a fight. I don't know of any getting past his seniors, people can say what they want about his personality and ethics but he produced top notch fighters. The seniors sparred every Friday night , they never wore gloves or pads but sometimes crash helmets , so they could learn to deliver full contact hammer fists to the head and face without hospitalising each other. The grinding arm is not to just strengthen your arms but your whole body, from the feet up , so you hit from the feet up, not just your arms. The grinding arm is just one of , I think 18 ( but I only ever learnt 4) , of these exercises to strengthen various parts of the body and condition limbs, the exercises are not unique to SPM , I have spoke to Sifus in Pak Mei, Southern Dragon and they have their version of resistance 2 person exercises, I guess they all came from the same root once and the these styles are an expression of a teachers understanding back in time . The so called "special press up " is not unique to SPM but exists in Hung gar, Pak Mei, Southern Dragon, Gojo Ryu Karate and I recently saw it in south Indian Martial arts and Indian wrestling. Who ever told you it was to give you shock power led you down a strange path. Being a close range system, it is designed to generate as much force as possible without having to chamber up and pull your hand back. The training is painful and very boring but essential for a good foundation. Without the correct power training and conditioning , none of the techniques work. Very few, including me stayed the course. As for " talking the crap out of other styles" I have heard the same being said by teachers in FMA, Silat , Karate , TKD, WC , Tai Chi etc so sadly , not unique to the southern school you went to, I wonder if it is about protecting their income or loyalty to their system? I think today a lot of people cross train and younger sifus are relaxed about it. I stopped training a long time ago, when I did , I just wanted to train, make friends , hopefully pick up something that works if I need it and stay out of the politics. What I do find depressing about Kung Fu, is that students are shown loads of forms and when they spar, stick boxing gloves on and then hop up and down and start doing awful kick boxing. None of which looks like the forms! They might as well just join a kick box club and learn to do it properly. This is as bad as belonging to a cult to me. BTW , I love Xing Yi i have seen on TH-cam but never met anyone who could use it in a fight. I don't know if it is down to the quality of teachers or quality of students. Well that is my 10 pence worth take care and enjoy your training.

      @@ShkarSharif-KFZ Thanks Shkar :) Is some of the San Zan included also? Im just wondering if this is a course that should be done alongside your main program or something that can be done standalone with no other practices until the body is correctly developed.

    • @ShkarSharif-KFZ
      @ShkarSharif-KFZ หลายเดือนก่อน

      San Zhan is not included in this program. You can do this as a standalone as it will help develop your internals for any system you practise, especially south Shaolin systems and it’s off shoots… you can also do it with my main program to help you develop the internals faster.

      It's not at all. Avoiding people that claim authority over everything is just, avoiding people that are open to criticism isn't. It's not that hard to see, it's ridiculous people have a hard time understanding this.

    Yes! I was in what I call the 'Cult of the White Robes'! Fortunately, I recognised the inconsistencies and got out! Pretty much everything you said is what I experienced: - 1. Regular Gradings. 2. Senior Students having no mind of their own in favour of whatever the "master" dictates. 3. Totally unnecessary "seminars" to move onto the 'Black Belt' level. 4. Toxic Teacher Syndrome - it was / is a family business, and that family is weird as f**k! 5. Insecure teacher, withholding tuition because he's misinterpreted something said innocuously, and took it personally. 6. Racism - White Supremacy. 7. Getting trolled on social media because I refuse to be brainwashed. 8. Students being told to unfriend / unfollow me from social media platforms. 9. Toxic Teacher talking shit about other behind their backs - me included! 10. Toxic Teacher thinks he's the best! I am glad I saw the signs and got out! Never looked back! Thank you!

    Thanks for this, i was thinking a few days ago that i’d like tips on how to classify cult behaviour. And here it is! Sometimes i think people want to act in a cult like way even if the leader or group leading it didn’t necessarily instigate it. I’ve seen that in a local education school with a particular set of values and the parents would not allow criticism of the school in any way. They ostracised those with legitimate concerns and in the end the school was shut down after very suspect issues arose. I think the people running it fell foul of not critically examining their ethics and the awareness that no one would challenge them made it worse

      Humans are tribal by nature. And once they find a tribe, critical thinking often disappears and they defend the good, the bad and the ugly.

    Oh man, I was enrolled in a martial arts school like that in the 90s before I realized that it was a cult and left. To this day I can remember the fanaticism in their eyes. It was scary.

    This is very interesting from the point of view of someone training yiquan. The founder of yiquan did incorporate some white crane into his art, and it's quite evident for me now.

    I appreciate you more advanced talks. Good for people who are at a level that it really means something and good for people who are not there yet to have things to aspire to. Bagua systems talk about rotation around the middle finger and pointing as you describe. Some taiji and qigong systems talk about using the laogong points in the center of palms. Maybe they are really doing the same thing. The only thing I find (IMHO) is that the elbows really need to be sunk and can not be outside the frame of the body. Otherwise the tissues will pull ( like qigong) but will not connect to the center. I wish you well in your on line training venture . Great to see people spreading good gong fu. Especially shaolin systems were people thing everything is wushu. Continued good luck

    Question about san zhan. The first battle is done through the yijinjing process, basically changing the body. Is the second done through the xisuijing or the energy system? If I remember well you mentioned orbits and similar energy work. Is the third spiritual battle still done through the form or it changes to seated meditation?
