    My husbnd Derek, a brilliant pianist and organist, heard this music on radio. It was the last piece he shared with me before he got dementia, so reminds us of the wonderful years we had living in Scotland. i would like it to be played at his funeral. Beautiful, and so lovely played by the guitar group.

    My daughter walked down the aisle to this lovely music. It was an outside wedding in a redwood forest with the trees towering above like a cathedral. Pure magic.

    So richly gorgeous! Two favorite moments: 2:38 -- Bill's face -- how many times I've had the same emotion during a beautiful musical experience! And at 3:06 when Bill and Scott sing to each other -- emotions of hope and love! Thank you LAGQ!

    It is wonderful to see guitarists playing together. It is usually such a lonely instrument, so it is nice to see it successfully integrated into an ensemble.

    I've just sat through half a dozen guitar versions of Sir Peter's guilty secret thinking he was right to compose it for piano. But then I heard this...magnificent!

    I realise that this was written for piano, but the arrangement (and playing!) here is absolutely superb.

    I don't know who LAGQ are or what else they have recorded, but after this I want to find out. 'Farewell to Stromness' in the usual piano version has beauty but can have monotony as there are so many repetitions of the same 7 note phrase. Here, it avoids that as different guitars come in at different points. This is lovely.

    This was PMD worrying about the possibility of a uranium mine being developed on Stromness in 1980. It didn't happen, but it left us with a lovely melody.

    Always been enchanted by Sir Maxwells own piano version, but the four guitars provide us with a delightful alternative. Live on Sir Maxwell through your music.

    This is definitely the best version of this piece I have heard. It might seem weird but to me its actually like the guitars are singing to each other? If that makes any sense at all? Especially the section after 3:05 :) Just beautiful!

      The piece was originally written as part of a review. This was a protest against the development of a uranium mine in the Stromness area. PMD was foremost amongst the resistance to this, and the community won and the project abandoned.

    @ukeplayer91 What you've written makes perfect sense.
    That musical technique when the instrument take turns is actually named "call and response."
    I think it can be quite beautiful and moving when used well.

    4 dislikes, ... one of them surely must be Andrew. I don't know why Scott, Bill, and John disliked this. They're still in. Anyway, 4 dislikes is a hell of a coincidence. :)

    can someone explain me what does stromness means plz?

    • @gilltennant9237
      @gilltennant9237 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Stromness means headland in the tidal stream. The harbour is called Hamnavoe, both have Norn or Norse origins, as Orkney and Shetland were both part of Scandinavia until Orkney was relinquished as part of the unpaid dowry of a Norse princess who was to marry the Scottish king.

      He wrote this tune outraged that open cast mining was planned without a care of the land or for its people who'd have been displaced. Amazingly, the plan never happened.
