Forging a campfire cooking tripod - basic blacksmithing project

  • Summer is right around the corner and that means camping and cooking over the campfire. A simple forged tripod is a great blacksmithing project as well as a great way to cook over the fire.

    Nice job! If I remember correctly You are a retired firefighter too? I became a farrier early in my career. Ive done some blacksmithing but mostly shoeing and training horses. I love your work. Blessings brother! I was a city of Bellevue firefigher in Washington state. local 1604. One things for sure you are always welcome at my campfire. I'll make sure the coffee is on.

    Finally got to this project. Made the tripod, the adjustable trammel hanger, a coffee pot trivet and a heavy fork, spoon and ladle, all hand forged at the anvil. Camping gift for my doctor who spends many hours camping and cooking over the campfire with her family. Pointed the feet and off-set the points with a fuller mark all around. Thanks again, John!

    20+ yrs. ago I worked full time as a blacksmith at an historical forge. I made so many of those I thought I'd never want to see one again. Lol - Now, I just smith at home and make things I want to make rather than things I have to make. It's fun again! I really enjoy your channel, John.

    A few years ago, I was next door to a lady smith who I bet didn't weigh in at over 160 pounds in a wet sweater. In the end, she forged a tripod of 5/8 square stock, and did some gymnastics press, lifting herself over top of it. Needless to say, I was impressed! Very cool, and sale worthy project for this time of year. Thanks John!

    What amazes me about blacksmithing is how relatively quickly and simply you can make some really cool and useful things. I mean the fact that with a hunk of steel on the end of stick you can put together something like that is amazing.

    Us Romany Gypsy people used those a lot. The other thing that we used was something, usually made out of rebar that looked like a shepherd's crook. This could be driven into the ground at a 45 degree angle and hold a kettle over a fire.

    A one piece gypsy hook is better. They are not as heavy as tripods and quick to set up. It rains a lot in the UK so speed is a priority. You just have to stick it in the ground and your done. Its also easy to take your pot on and off the curled end. You don't see them often. But if a blacksmith starts making them snap one up. They are simply a curled top spike. But they work. I have used one for years here. I only use a tripod if I have made one from sticks and I am using a really heavy pot. its simple to whip one together. And you can use them for fuel once you have finished cooking. They are nice and dry by then. But if you want something forged, then you want to look up Gypsy hooks. I am sure you would enjoy making one. They look simpler to make and you use less iron.

    In Japanese homes before gas or electric stoves, a rope terminating in a chain hung from the rafters. A wooden handle with a hole was threaded near the knot between the chain and the rope. It acted as as a pot holder to swing the chain closer and away from the fire without burning your fingers. Oddly enough this handle was fish shaped to ward off heat since fish are the masters of water, and water plus fire do not mix. This fish was always where it was needed and did not require looking for. If used in this camp setup, it might need longer supports to keep from tipping them over. If long enough you could even leave a flashlight dangling near the top pointing downwards. A blacksmiths glove would be great as a way of grasping the handle of the pot provided the pot has not become too hot.

    So I have watched this several times and love the build. I am wondering if there were a way to make the legs folding and locking in open length. I am thinking of those that don’t have the room in their camper or whatever to take full length legs but want the full length while using the tripod? Can’t seem to find anything that explains or shows how to do that. Thanks John and as always 👍🏼

      Most rebar is an alloy steel, so its harder to work with. Projects like this work perfectly with mild steel and don't require the additional characteristics of the alloy. Additionally, rebar will always look like rebar and I feel that really detracts form the appearance of any finished product.

    Why not rebar?

    • @BlackBearForge
      @BlackBearForge  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suppose my number one reason is that I don't like the look of rebar. But since it is a medium carbon steel it is also harder to work with and more expensive to purchase than buying mild steel.
