I just discovered you and your videos this morning. After binge watching several different kinds, I am so glad to have found your channel! Thank you so much for sharing everything from folklore to recipes found only in our dear part of the world.
I'm from Northwest Georgia and am grateful to God for my heritage. Sadly I've discovered many people from these parts (including some family members) are embarrassed because they were born and raised in our culture.
After having literally traveled the world as an Air Force brat I was happy and blessed as an adult to decide to live here, in the little Georgia town where I was born.
To me, there's no more beautiful place than our lush green hills, and our sparkling creeks, rivers, and lakes. Our people are a kind, giving lot, tough as pine knots and gentle as children. It's a blessing to live in such a lovely place.

I love this! I never had a wedding shower or reception when I got married, and therefore inherited cookware and utensils from both grandmas and my mother. Some pieces are really old but have stood the test of time and I use them daily. I didn't always but now feel blessed to have these older kitchen items with such good memories attached.

I have a favorite ladle: a "monoblock" pressed out of a single piece of stainless steel sheet metal: the handle and the bowl of the ladle are not welded together, as is usually the case, so there are no difficult-to-clean spots at the contact surfaces and the ladle doesn't get gaumed up with food residue and mold, so it's very easy to clean due to its smooth contours.

I have several kitchen items from my grandma on my Mom's side. I can remember then from a small child in the late 40's & 50's. Thanksgiving day 2022 I was making real whipped cream for our pies that I was taking to my daughter's for dinner. My cheapy little mixer wouldn't thicken the cream & I was just beside myself. I took Grandma's egg beater & went to work. Very soon I had the cream whipped & it made beautiful peaks. :-) I'm like you Tipper. I just love having my grandma's things. I had her rolling pin & my Mom's & mine. I'm so thankful for them.

Tipper, this was a fun video for me, I love seeing you talk about your tools. They are treasures for sure! My kitchen tools are like old friends. Living alone I don't cook as much as I used to, but I still have and love all my old utensils. I have an old wooden handled spatula that we used frying eggs when I was a child...and that's a long time ago! The much-used kitchen tools become like a part of the family. Love your videos! I'm attracted to old things too! To this day, I use a big pastry board that my carpenter grandfather made for my mother. She made all her pies and pastries on it. When age caused her to abandon making pie crust in favor of store-bought graham cracker crusts, I asked if I could have it. I've made all my pies on it for over 30 years (and will later today when I make another blueberry pie!). I wouldn't part with it!

Ms. Tipper, you are an *antiquarian...* like I am! I LOVE old books and *tools,* kitchen or otherwise. They seem to hold a bit of the essence of all those meals, all those wires and branches clipped just. so., transferring, perhaps, a bit of the wisdom of times past.

Thanks for sharing! My favorite biscuit cutter used to be an empty mushroom can with both ends cut out. I bent one end into egg shape and left the other end round because I needed an egg shaped cookie cutter one year for Easter cookies, so it became a dual purpose tool. Some helpful soul tossed it in the trash a few years ago, I think, not realizing I was keeping it on purpose. I have several of the one piece silicone spatulas and I love them, too. I have some stainless turners/spatulas made by ekco, as well as a couple of the square holed potato mashers, all from back in the late 1960s & early1970s. They are my go to utensils, along with some stainless restaurant spoons & ladles I picked up at rummage sale.

I have most of the same utensils, some exactly alike and many similar to yours, some from Mom-mom and some from Mom when I was growing up. If I may, I would recommend a Microplane zester/grater. This utensil is perfect to puree raw garlic, finely grate ginger , zest all the citrus family, finely grate hard cheese like parmesan and freshly grate nutmeg from whole nutmegs. I think nutmeg done this way is more fragrant and has a less heavy nutmeg taste in custards and baked goods. Microplane is a brand name, but others are available on-line, just be sure the word zester is used. Care must be taken, as with a mandolin, as the teeth are very sharp, but I wouldn't be without mine.

Sentimental kitchen utensils, I think most people from our generation has a few of them. When my mom passed away I had already lived out on my own for a very long time, but she had a few utensils I wanted and thankfully my sisters were fine with me taking them. One was her potato masher which she got when she got married in 1954, then there was her soup ladle and her mixing spoon, I also took her popcorn serving bowl, which we all had fond memories of. My daughter was married earlier this year and she constantly asks when she will get the rest of the utensils that belonged to memere', my sisters thought I should gift them to her for her wedding, but I just wasn't ready to let them go, especially the heavy weight mixing spoon that doesn't bend in cookie dough and the popcorn bowl. I did let her take the masher though. I'll let her take the rest when she tells me they are expecting, which fingers crossed will be soon. Love seeing your kitchen treasures, thank you for sharing.

One of my recent purchases is a pair of oven mitts. The reason I like these so well is because they fit like a glove with individual fingers. It makes getting my batter bowl out of the microwave easier and with a better grip. I use the batter bowl to make peanut brittle and you know how hot that sugary syrup has to get. This feels much more secure when doing that or when I’m gripping an iron skillet.

Loved this! I too have gotten attached to my utensils and love that they have memories attached to them. Some of the neatest I have gotten were from my Mom. She worked for a rural electric co-op and every year they had an annual meeting. At these meetings they gave all attendees some sort of kitchen utensil with the name of the co-op on it. Of course my Mom got extras and would give them to family members. I use them still and that’s been 50 years ago. Things were definitely made to last back then and I’m pleased about that!😊

My favorite knife in my kitchen is one that was made by an older man where my grandparents lived. He was my grandfather's age and quit school when he was twelve to learn blacksmithing from his father. He made the knife for my great uncle who told me one day that he'd either give it to me or sell it to me for a nickel. Apparently it's bad luck to give someone a knife? I told him I wouldn't pay for something I could get for free, but it was a very nice gift. The knife has a walnut handle with three brass rivets and the blade is about 8" long. You can 'carefully' bend the blade until it's got a deep curve in it and it will return to straight again every time because it was made from the leaf spring of a model T truck. The down side to the knife is that it has to be washed and thoroughly dried immediately after each use because it will sit there and rust. It holds a pretty good edge though, I've cut myself with it more than once.
BTW, I think your ruler is a 'scale'. One edge has an inch ruler but the other edges will have a 1/4 equals 1 foot and other fractions of an inch equals a foot scales. I was a carpenter for 40 years and had one around close by to scale drawings, which you're not supposed to do but I did anyway.
    Really enjoy your videos.

You said it was a Texas ware range which of course doesn't exist in England. Anyway I got onto ebay and there were quite a few for sale. Considering they were old and evidently still wanted the prices reflected this. I got quite excited until I noticed how much shipping would cost! You could pay about £20 for the bowl but then anything between £30 to £50 for shipping! I will just admire yours. Thanks for the video and I am looking forward to the morning and the next installment.

I recognized the ice cream scoop right away because my mom has one. I just have a regular style ice cream scoop, which I use for everything from ice cream to scooping out a perfect 1/4lb of hamburger for the patty press to scooping out cookie dough to make giant cookies. It's stainless steel and cleans up really well, so I'm not worried about cross contamination. I have a nice pastry blender similar to yours, in that it doesn't get all wonky with use. It's actually my son's but currently I use it more than he does (he's a gourmet cheesecake baker, both as an employee at a local coffee shop and as a cottage industry profession). I could go on, but this comment is long enough already!

You have an interesting variety of utensils, Tipper. Thanks to your demonstration of it in an earlier video, I now have (and am very fond of) a Rada tomato knife. In addition to tomatoes, it does a great job slicing fingers. Ouch. When I got my three-sided ruler, which is decades older than the one you have and made of wood, it was known as an architect's rule.

Your Fillet knifes in the leather case is like the ones my late husband and I kept in our tackle box for cleaning fish, my husband love them.

LOL, I have that same ruler! Mine was my dad's (who was an electrical engineer). It's kinda too 'math-y' for the kitchen, but I love it because it was his.

Loved seeing this. I was just complaining to my husband that I’m not happy with new spatulas….I like my old one and can’t find another like it. It’s funny how we get attached to those things we use daily. I think I need to visit some yard sales to see if I can find another like my old one.

I have an old biscuit cutter of my grandmothers. It has the word Rumsford imprinted into the metal handle so it must have been a baking powder promotion from long ago.

I really liked what you said about old utensils being friends. We still have my great grandma's butcher knife, it's like one of the family. I have always been drawn to old things too. I can't say i trust folks that always have to have the newest stuff. Truly

Tools, yes. I have a few very old utensils too. But like you I do like those one piece silicone spatulas. They're tough! I also have flat wooden ones that I tend to use a lot. One of them has holes in it. Not sure what that's for, maybe stirring soup? That little triangular whisk you have as always caught my eye, and I will go look it up. Thanks again for a good video.

Enjoyed your tool review. The biscuit cutter...love them. My m-i-l & her sister would use a drinking glass but I grew up with the metal one like yours. I would also use it to chop up strawberries...just enough to break them up & macerate with a spoonful of sugar. Find it's quick & controllable. Yum!

My favorite favorite cooking utensil is a short handled medium width wooden spurtle. I use that thing every day. I love wooden spoons for mixing and stirring (making a cake, etc) too but so many of them are too big and chunky. My fav sort of "wooden spoon" is actually a wooden rice paddle. The size is perfect. The handle is short and it's not bulky.

Having a great time tonight watching these videos. I could say so much. I still have my g-ma's spatula. It's got a round shape and a chip in the plastic handle, perfect for pancakes. I have her box grater (don't use it anymore, on display). And aluminum colander I use almost every day.

What we called a corn cutter was an adjustable piece of wood that fit over a bowl with a blade and a carved out area that fit the corn, made it real easy putting up corn every year, just swipe the ears down it all around and it was done in no time.
And I don't know why folks say you can't use a metal spatula or egg turner on cast iron, our whole family has done it since as far back as I can remember, evidently it's the younger generations that assume that cause you ain't supposed to use metal on them no stick skillets that poisons your food that they think you can't use them on any skillet, which don't make no sense, else why would they have made them for so many, many years.
So many kitchen knives got passed down over the years that many were wore down, they were made better and lasted longer.
Seems like folks nowadays don't use graters anymore cause they buy pre shredded cheese that don't taste or even melt like cheese and buy pre shredded cabbage in plastic bags.
Nowadays folks use electric mixers instead of tater mashers, but I tell ya right now, I could always get them taters smooth with an old tater masher, and a bunch of folks would get me to mash the taters for the meal from their kitchens, I just don't get what the big deal is.
A rolling pin didn't get much use around my house, just used my hands to pat out biscuit dough, only ever used one for cookie dough, pie crust or keeping the husband in line.

You can't hardly beat rada, can ya? I have several knives and the vegetable peeler.
I have the scalloped chopper and I've used it to make coleslaw for almost 50 years now, best household shower gift ever. Everytime my husband eats someone else's coleslaw, he whispers to me, "somebody needs to get them a chopper thang" 🤣
(it makes small pieces of cabbage)

Fantastic! I was blessed to inherit my husband's grandmother's Revere Ware. Everytime I use them, I wonder what all has been cooked in them. She got them when she was married in the 1940's.

Ms. Tipper, those fillet knives are the best. My Grandaddy used them exclusively. And, let me tell ya, he could get them sharp enough to shave hair. I feel like they were Swedish made and high quality. Thank you for sharing and thank you for bringing us all together once again.

My mom had those Tupperware measuring cups. I remember orange, green, and gold.
My pastry cutter is from my great grandma, and I have a big cast iron skillet from my grandma.
One of my favorite Christmas memories was from when I was in my early 20s. I thought I was being so classy by giving my sister a marble rolling pin. Mom insisted that we open our gifts to each other at the same time. Turns out, my sister had gotten me a rolling pin as well. Mom got the biggest laugh out of it.

I’ve loved vintage kitchen tools since I was a young girl. My favorite piece is my tomato knife. It has a very long, skinny blade and the handle is probably fake Bakelite. It will slice a very ripe tomato in a heartbeat!
