They weren't even allowed to smile or laugh ! and if they took their "ghomta"(ghungat) off ,they might even be subjected to social boycott or even killings!
The reason we see most women activists coming from Bengal is because the social conditions of women were worst in Bengal and still the conditions have not really changed that much !
Still now in Bengali marriages have a tradition of husbands promising to " take the responsibility of the food and cloth of the women " ...

I am from Haryana but I have stayed in bengal during my studies at IIT Kharagpur. I learnt that Bengalis are really educated and they prefer good education especially for girls. Their girls are confident, aggressive and smart. Respect ✊

@@theunmatched1737 I am not sure about the history but I have nowhere heard of girls being celebrated like in Bengal. Girls are welcomed , motivated to go for higher studies, and become independent. I personally know a few families who had a single girl child and didn't even go for a second child citing the reason that they wanted a girl only. This is much better than north India where families get sad on the birth of a girl.

Ranking of Global innovation index of India was at 41 in 2008 but you haven't told it, you told about the rank of 84 in 2014. GDP growth was at 10.26%, you haven't told it. You havee compared the best of one with worst of the other. India was 3rd largest in economy in 2010 but you told about it when it came down to 10. Either you compare the best or the worst.
