Class of 2000 here, this movie was such a moment. It was close enough to what we were experiencing to be relatable yet fantastical enough to give escapism.
Let me take you back to the magical year of 1998… I was a senior in high school, 18 years old. Unfortunately, I got caught with my friends’s mother (she was 36). There was some drama at my high school and within our group of friends. Let’s flash forward a year, time has healed most of these wounds, and the group of friends go to the movies and see American Pie. We are crying we’re laughing so hard… until the Finch and Stiffler’s mom scene. It got very quiet and they all turned almost in unison and looked at me.
I give props to the Director & all involved for allowing *LEVY* to improv his lines. That decision & the title choice were key in turning this movie from good to great!!

They were some of the best chilidogs I’ve ever had. Also the interior of Yesterdog is similar to Dog Years, only a lot of it is wood paneling and it’s covered by decades of people’s signatures. It’s charming
Absolutely loved (and still do) this movie and the 'original' sequels. Being from Michigan, and graduating from HS around the same time as these movies came out...the local connection was important to us. We knew it wasn't actually 'filmed' here but we still took the connection to heart and it DID feel authentic for the Grand Rapids and Lake Michigan area (for part 2). My two sons are 'almost' old enough for this film, and I'm looking forward to sharing it with them too!
I think some people in this world need a reality check. American Pie was first and foremost a teenage comedy/drama that was meant to be taken that way. The film was released in 1999 which is hard to believe was 25 years ago, and for people who try to cancel it and want apologies for its content, I would tell them to relax and have some warm apple pie.
I rented the unrated version when it was newly released to the delight of my younger cousins. Not so delighted was my grandmother, since we watched it at her house.
I was going to be a senior in high school when this came out in the summer of 99. My friends and I loved it as we all related to it. I still love the franchise as I can relate to growing up, going to college, marriage, and reunions.
I was 18 about to be 19 when it came out, so just out of high school so I can relate. I love them all but the first and reunion are probably my favorites.
Same. I will always remember the controversy with kids trying to get in and movie theaters starting to ID people. I turned 17 that summer, so I guess I had good timing. Before that they would just ask you for your dob if you were trying to get into an r rated movie
@@topchief1 ha Same! My friend couldn't get in because they had an August birthday so they wouldn't let her in. So we all went to a different theater across town where they didn't care about checking IDs
Love ya Minty! Your closing statement is right on: "It's just a movie." People need to lighten up. Pretty easy: If this movie isn't your cup of tea, don't watch it. Thank you to you and your everyone on your crew!
Born in 81, class of 99... my friends and I loved American Pie. It's so weird that it's been 25 years and like the movie, I still remember so many things clearly. One thing that isn't talked about, is how much 99's music you hear in the Soundtrack. Blink 182, Harvey Danger... the music is such a testament to the times also. America Pie wasn't just a movie. It was a testament to the culture at the time. It's crudeness, has always been crude and still is crude in nature. High School kids are loud, obnoxious, sexualized young adults, trying to figure things out and screwing it all up. My own adventures with friends were similar to American Pie. Sexcapades, trying to lose my virginity; with just as many mishaps. The social life of a Senior in High School. I think American Pie could be made today. Just give everyone cell phones to hold, throughout the movie and bam. 2024!
As a 16 year old in 1999 we had just great coming of age movies like this, Road Trip, Kevin and Perry, which followed awesome childhood movies like Goonies, Stand by Me and others. Makes me wonder if other generations had their movies? I find it hard to believe they were better than ours.
@dalebaker9533 It absolutely is! The purity standards the woke mob calls for is virtually verbatim to the Puritan witch hunts. Anything that fails to be absolutely lockstep with the “correct” school of thought is canceled, threatened, and hounded into seclusion. The Puritan witch trials only ended when the mob accused the mayor’s wife. I wonder what it’ll take to end the current purges.
Bill Murray as the dad would’ve been totally different and probably would’ve had a sub plot that focused on him. I was surprised he only had like 3 lines in the new ghostbusters

I went to see Pie in a half empty screen by myself and broke y shit laughing throughout the whole thing, I'm an 80's child and it was great to see the sex comedies of the 80's live again, but with great characters and a lot of heart. This movie came out just the right time for me in 1999 when I started my senior year of high school. It was like, these are characters that are my age. Several movie posters, new and old, would even copy the American Pie logo like Revenge of the Nerds 2 in order to cash in on the popularity of this movie as if to say, "If you like American Pie, watch this movie."
The next AP should go really bold and call it American Pie: Funeral or American Funeral. The series is about facing life head on, death is a part of this. Plus the odds of getting laid at a friend’s funeral are pretty high.
If they do this at the funeral scene they need to have Will Ferrell just be standing in the background talking to a woman. Let him reprise his role of Chazz Reinhold from Wedding Crashers.
Shit brick losing it in the women's bathroom has to be the funniest scene I've ever seen. You can even see Eddie Kaye Thomas trying to hold back his own laughter while on the thrown.
Thanks for playing laid by James. Id forgotten bout that one. Also, I grew up in East Grand rapids , and and yep. Ppl were screwing cantaloupe and doing teachers and college people. Bandcamp was just a hookup. If anything this movie was tame, but they got the parents stuff right. Everybody's folks were nice and just let us chill. Most of us turned out ok, the half that are left
Anyone that hates this movie either had a boring or terrible experience growing up, or they take life WAY too seriously! This film was written in a way where each character was either a piece of ourselves growing up, or someone you knew. I thought this held true in the sequels as well. They captured that "best friends trying to figure out adulthood together" mixed with growing just a touch apart as life pushes forward but still holding each other close at heart
Definitely true!! Even those that have not seen the movie have quoted: “This one time at band camp…”, or “MILF” being chanted for years thereafter have cemented this movie as a blockbuster!!
The title is also a play on words. There is a metaphor in the US to describe something that is very “American” by stating that “_______ is as American as apple pie.” ***BONUS*** In the US the green plaid wallpaper design in Jim’s room is now officially named “American Pie.”
I was class of 2000, and even today when I watch these movies, it brings back so many memories of my buddies and I back then. That was us in every way.
By far one of my favorite movies growing up. I saw part one the day before part 2 came out because all my friends were going to see part 2 in the theater and found out I had not seen part one yet lol
The late 90s to mid 2000s was such a magical and unique time to be a teen. The music and movie scene were on fire. I absolutely love the original 4 American Pie films, I have to watch them every year with my favorite drink at my side. It sucks that those movies and so many others will never get the love they deserve and a 4K upgrade because our feminist overlords refuse to allow our society to have a sense of humor...
One of the best franchises in cinematic history (excluding the spin offs). Harmless, outlandish fun, and totally relatable. At 46 years, these have still been my go-to's. Wedding is my personal favourite.
I think it was on the Late Show with David Letterman where Bruce Willis said he did the voice over for the pie. They showed the clip with Jim on top of the pie, and Bruce was screaming for help.
Is that your kitty cat????? So cute!!!!! And you know that in the US our flute is different than the one you have. Ours has a lot more....um keys...LOL! And it's played horizontal not vertical so it's just different LOL! And yes, I went to band camp for four years and had a friend that was a flautist (what a flute player is called)- but we never used our horns "after hours" LOL! But you have a really cute kitty!!!
Fun fact: when she was in Scary Movie the following year, she was originally supposed to play a different character. But she was determined to play Buffy
this is an iconic legend that never gets old...and you know, they had a director's cut recently for its anniversary. Everyone was worried because of the way things are, and it just slipped by quietly, and there is a new one coming next year apparently. Stiffler and his crew are now adults, marrried with children and they plan thier usual antics as they go for thier old reunion.
I grew up in the 80's & 90"s & this movie along with the other teen flicks help make my teen year memories more fun. But I feel the biggest teen movie then was Varsity Blues. Minty PLEASE DO VARSITY BLUES!!
My daughter always says in conversation with us “this one time” and myself and my mrs always follow up with “at band camp” and she’s never see the movie haha. It’s a classic and I love it.
Ahh, this movie… 1999, my first year of uni… I was doing a music degree and I was there for classical flute. I thought it would be a great idea for me and all my new uni buddies to go out and see this new movie everyone was raving about… /sigh. All through the movie, they kept teasing me for how similar to Michelle I was… and then she said it. She said that one line that has been plaguing flautists for 25 years. I wanted to crawl under the seat and die!! Even now “oh, you’re a musician? What do you play?” “Flute” “This one time, at band camp…” “Haven’t heard that before…” That being said, I did love and still guiltily enjoy these movies (not including the direct to video ones). They’re a bit of fun.
Man, this one brought back the memories. I saw this in theatres when I was 18. Bought the VHS when it came out and bought the CD (Movie Soundtrack) when it realeased. I still have the CD.
Chris Klein said he was doing a stage show at West End, London at the time but he also didn't think The Wedding would be popular so he started in London & he said he's regretted it ever since
I loved this series, I even had a few of the other ones as well. But the American pie ones with the og cast were the best. I'd love to see a new one with all the og cast to see what they are upto now.
Man. Iconic. You remember that one time? At band camo? I mean can say it many ways and it was oversaid by us all lol. And it was like 👍 👌 as a teen lol 😆
American Pie was brillaint. Made at a time when the western working class were thriving and that shows. Would love to see movies like this return. Our culture needs it.
Don't get it twisted, Bill Murray is a cinematic legend! Ghostbusters, What about Bob, Osmosis Jones, ect.... he has a great IMDB resume! But I think he was just too Big for this movie. He likely would've overshadowed all the other more unknown actors. Levy was the better fit😂
The characters in this movie were what sold it for me when I first watched this in theaters. I knew some one from my High School that represented every character in that movie. And people truly need to take a chill pill. Movies , comedy, games, music, books whatever, are entertainment. And need to be treated as such. Since when did all of our entertainment turn into work?
The spinoffs were gold. Highly recommend. The first spin off “band camp” is the worse one. The naked mile is probably the best one beta house is a sequel to naked mile. I think they came out with a girl version on Netflix a few years ago that was ok
I absolutely love the main AP movie franchise! So many good memories. Mr Levy totally nailed it as the dad! Never before had Minty said words more true than about Levy in this video. Always had the hots for Hannigan, so even another reason to watch these flicks. And yea, there'll always be Stifler's mom...😁😁 And then there's the later on in the movies featured Matt Nathanson's version of the song "Laid", which has become the distinctive theme tune for the franchise...❤ ..probanly more to ne said , but I won't bother..
I remember going to see American Pie at the cinema with a group of friends. It was completely packed! None of us knew what to expect, and we didn't stop laughing from start to finish. Also, the cinematic version had Jim standing with the pie, while the home video "unrated" version was him on top of it. Not sure what the other changes were, though I seem to recall both showed the destroyed pie aftermath.
Hilarious movie! Will never forget someone got a bootleg copy and it was passed around to all the co-workers. We called our friends and had an American Pie viewing party that was gloriously funny!!
American Pie is easily one of the best series of comedy movies (not including the spinoffs)! The first one is a timeless classic with a great cast, soundtrack, quoutable lines and even an appearance by Blink-182! The other three are great too but out of the four, the 1st one will always remain my favourite!
Class of 2000 here, this movie was such a moment. It was close enough to what we were experiencing to be relatable yet fantastical enough to give escapism.
It would be EXTREMELY difficult for me to picture anyone else as Jim's Dad than Eugene Levy.... He IS that movie.
The guy who played Gaylord fockes dad in meet the rockers could have pulled it off also but I do agree Eugene Levy was great in this movie series

This film was written in a way where each character was either a piece of ourselves growing up, or someone you knew. I thought this held true in the sequels as well. They captured that "best friends trying to figure out adulthood together" mixed with growing just a touch apart as life pushes forward but still holding each other close at heart
I was 16 in 1999. Saw it in theaters and had it on vhs
you still used VHS in 1999? I was on dvd's by then.
Minty you had me at "this flute tastes different" haha
Definitely true!! Even those that have not seen the movie have quoted: “This one time at band camp…”, or “MILF” being chanted for years thereafter have cemented this movie as a blockbuster!!
I just bought the blu ray of the 4 theatrical releases a few months ago.... always enjoyed all of them
The title is also a play on words. There is a metaphor in the US to describe something that is very “American” by stating that “_______ is as American as apple pie.”
***BONUS***
In the US the green plaid wallpaper design in Jim’s room is now officially named “American Pie.”
Jim's dad is the goat
Regular or fainting variety?
These films are brilliant. Every time I watch them it’s like a breath of fresh air
This movie was just fantastic. Right movie, right time, right cast. The music, the humor, the atmosphere. This is a classic for sure!
This is my generation's Dazed and Confused, extremely accurate portrayal of what was going on (except for the pie.)
Whether you know it or not, someone in your friend group must definitely fucked a pie, a donut, a long John, or something like that... Trust me.
Nadia in the uncut version was an absolute 10. Please take me back to 99. ❤
I was about to start my sophomore year of high school when this movie came out. Good times, great memories!
Same here.
Dope video Minty - FYI the film festival is pronounced ‘CAN’
Very interesting article, helps me understand more about American Pie!
OMG ... I finally finished watching every single vid on your channel!!!
I think it was on the Late Show with David Letterman where Bruce Willis said he did the voice over for the pie. They showed the clip with Jim on top of the pie, and Bruce was screaming for help.
Stifler is an absolute LEGEND lol😂
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Is that your kitty cat????? So cute!!!!! And you know that in the US our flute is different than the one you have. Ours has a lot more....um keys...LOL! And it's played horizontal not vertical so it's just different LOL! And yes, I went to band camp for four years and had a friend that was a flautist (what a flute player is called)- but we never used our horns "after hours" LOL! But you have a really cute kitty!!!
"When i was 15 i wasn't very clever-" immediately cuts to "Casting Pie-ssibilities" 😂😂😂😂
Strange thing is, the band camp line was also referanced in an episode of Yugioh GX. The character Cyrus says "This one time, at duel camp."
That intro cracked me up! This is what he does - been doing it so long he's starting to lose his mind, crazy Minty! 🤣
The sound tracks were always pretty good, particularly the second film.
🤣😂😱OMG MINTY, YOU DID NOT JIST DO THAT WITH A FLUTE..........😂🤣WELL DONE SIR
Your flute jokes are cracking me up 😂
I still miss Shannon Elizabeth 😆
One of the rauchy comedies of all time, cool video as always Minty, you take care and have a nice day sir
What do you play?” “Flute” “This one time, at band camp…” “Haven’t heard that before…”
That being said, I did love and still guiltily enjoy these movies (not including the direct to video ones).
@minty
Hey what version of “calling your name” is that?
I ask because I used to have it till BS Apple Music deleted my library
Hey Minty! I noticed you couldnt get out of that camera fast enough after the "I hope you all have a slize of a warm apple pie" ^^
Since when did all of our entertainment turn into work?
even the music and the fact that blink made a cameo, etc. shows its mainstream output
I like all 4 American Pie movies. I never seen any other those spin offs tho. Didn't know Eugene Levy was in them.
And yea, there'll always be Stifler's mom...😁😁
And then there's the later on in the movies featured Matt Nathanson's version of the song "Laid", which has become the distinctive theme tune for the franchise...❤
..probanly more to ne said , but I won't bother..
Classic example of the 1990's- the theme, the music, the realism.
This move (both 1 &2) are 100% great teen movies, and always will be.
I appreciate that you used the movie's soundtrack in the background of the video. Very cool detail
American Pie is easily one of the best series of comedy movies (not including the spinoffs)! The first one is a timeless classic with a great cast, soundtrack, quoutable lines and even an appearance by Blink-182! The other three are great too but out of the four, the 1st one will always remain my favourite!
