As I mentioned in another comment, I tried looking into other SF units besides the SEALs and SAS, and while I'm sure there is inspiration drawn from them all to some degree, I felt the SEALs were very close. I'll have to research Delta more, and Gothic Serpent. :-D I'm still new to this type of content and not very savvy on equipment that isn't guns.

kinda wouldnt be suprised if hunk wasnt some advanced or mildly altered form of BOW, just for the eyes glowing red behind the lenses shot. i could see a company as big as umbrella tweaking their personal staff to increase their survivability but not stand out overly among normal military/ QRF troops, plenty of other highly trained groups didnt make it out of Raccoon City, but hunk managed to nearly alone.

So I mostly agree with your assessment of the original 1998 version of HUNK. I personally wouldn’t rely too much on the in-game model because the low poly-count can be misleading. However I would use it to see key design details the game developers wanted to emphasize so that his in-game model would be instantly recognizable, even through the limited graphics of the time. The unique red lens, uniform color, etc. Primarily using his portrait in the inventory menu and the art in the epilogue, I came to the same conclusion that yes the USS do in fact use Avon S10 respirators. In the epilogue you can clearly see the unique ridge around the edge of the mask that’s missing from the FM12/CT12 respirators that the newer remake model appears to be based on. You can also see that they are wearing the unique tinted red lenses as well. I also agree with the Pro-tec bump helmets. The developers seemed to be inspired by US Special Forces of the era. Specifically Delta Force during Operation Just Cause and contemporary VBSS operations at that time (Force Recon, SEALs, etc) You can also see the same bump helmets also being used by Delta during Operation Gothic Serpent (Black Hawk Down). To my understanding the bump helmets came about because operators hated bumping their heads whenever they raided the inside of a cramped dark ship.
I bet if you had been able to tour Capcom's office during the development of RE2, you would have seen the same or very similar reference photos pinned to the walls.

I think he's around 35-40 ish. which means he is already past the age of 30 when he joined Umbrella. Lets assume he joined the Navy at the age of 18. That means he got at least 12 years of experience in the field. Hmm... His dad could also be a Vietnam Vet... An interesting character is an understatement

I started building a Hunk cosplay in 2020 during the first Covid lockdowns and spent copious time poring over his model in the Resi 2 remake and trying to match whatever gear I could find available to buy online as closely as possible. The (almost) finished article looks pretty close now, if I do say so myself. I never bothered to research if his original look was modelled on a particular unit/loadout/photo though, and since it's from 1998 I imagine it's much harder to find sources from the Eighties/early Nineties than it would be for something released now, based on contemporary gear.
@@Richardwells3 That is a good shout, and it so happens I have a P83 battle jacket! I also have a tan/coyote LBV that I partly dyed to match his. I'll have to try the rest of the kit paired with the battle jacket and see how it looks.

For my money, the U.S.S.'s gear is clearly modeled on the "black kit" used by the UK's Special Air Service, right down to the gas masks, which closely resemble the Avon S10 used by the Regiment on CT ops (especially from Resident Evil 4 onwards). The look was popularized in the public consciousness by the footage it being worn during the Iranian Embassy Siege in 1980; it's worth noting that even in the Resident Evil movies, the Umbrella special forces troops in the first movie (who are clearly meant to be an homage to HUNK and his team) wear Avon S10s during the scene where they first breach + clear the mansion, which absolutely smacks of the SAS to me.
Can I just say for someone who is suppose to be a typical jobber, HUNK is a goddamn Chad for a security guard. I wonder what his paygrade was before Umbrella shut down.
Have you made a video on Leon's Silver Ghost? I definitely want one for myself. Also the semi auto rifle he uses in re4, which i believe is one of two guns in the game that look realistic but aren't based on a single real gun.
When I was with Marine Recon 3-3 we used the same head gear, tatical vest witch was equipped with armor, our Kavalar helmet or boony hat with the similar gas mask worn by British SAS teams. Combat field jungle boots, web belt with K-Bar, 2 canteens, 2 M14 pouches. I used a rook sack or but pack with suspenders. I had 2 45 pouches on my web belt to. I used a M12 combat nylon holster on a drop leg shroud. And that was all black SOPS. I used a HK 308 G3 sniper rifle. I used HK UMP 45 ACP or M-4 Carbine in unit Assult's. I used my Sig Sauer P 220 45 ACP as my side arm this was 1987 to 1991. We had good stuff back then all Nylon soft light and never made me sweat. Hoorah!
I think in remake 2 Hunk and the U.S.S. are wearing Individual Integrated Fighting System rigs. Edit: Nevermind I'm dumb, it's probably the ALICE SOE lbv

I was under the assumption that it'd be the older S10, given the time period of the game. I guess my research could be wrong, but I though the FM12s didn't see fielding until 2000.
@@hunk5472 RE2 takes place in '96 while I'm sure there would be some FM12's out there by the Racoon City incident but I doubt that the U.S.S. would be the first to adopt it.
Umbrella was also a pioneer in military tech, so it wouldn't be too surprising if they gave their boys some of the newest stock before they even hit shelves.
Thank you for showing this video but because of the scene where you point out the red eyes of hunk about to be attacked by William Birkin I think we might have actually just figured out hunk's actual identity in part. Because of his loyalty to umbrella and unwavering loyalty at that his uncanny level of strength and speed and his near emotionless response to everything combined with the red eyes I think it's safe to say that hunk has at least been given the progenitor virus by Spencer and is in fact a Wesker. That's right out of the eight Wesker children Alex and Albert aren't the only two hunk is a third one
Better for Hunk to maybe have a history with Delta Force/Green Berets, not the Navy Seals as they talk too much, write books and make movies and shit, Hunk isn't anything like that, he's a stoic man of few words and an absolute badass/professional soldier/survivor. SEALS don't fit that description.

those are special lenses for the s10 gasmask to prevent being blinded by flashbangs

Great theories! Those seal pictures probably inspired a lot of character designs. Metal Gear literally put them in the game as XOF soldiers.

HUNK wears an Avon FM12 Gas Mask. Not an s10. His mask also has an extension on the front called a VPU.
