  • In this video I summarize the cost of living Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), but this time i did it in a different way showing prices and expenses of living from a perspective of a true local.
Be aware: someone that wasn't born there could probably never live in this place as the locals live.
How much does it cost to live in Dar es Salaam for a local? Check it out...
I travel the world investigating the costs of living in different places. I visit shops, gyms, offices, talk to local people to find out the expenses for an average person.

I would like to remind everybody that this is only one part of dares Salam. This is the not so wealthy area and my intention with this video was not to humiliate or mislead anybody but to show how some people can live with a very low income. I admire these people that eventough live in a very difficult situation keep on going. Dares Salam downtown is very different from what's shown in the video. I called the video "living with 80 USD a month" because that's what it is and if you're from dares and are offended by that you really don't know certain parts of your country and the people that live in it.

Most of the angry comments are from people who never been there to DAR nor seen the reality of most areas .
It would be boring if you have had filmed this video in Masaki , Coco beach or the expensive small ward of DAR nor it will fit the tittle "living on 80 USD in DAR" .
A bedroom apartment could cost up to 2500 USD in Masaki .
Who cares about how the few riches live in Dar es Salaam. Personally am not interested watching Swimming pools or heavily guarded houses , mansions or Embassy in Masaki.

I went to Tz, Dar in summer 2018, was 23 at the time, didnt know anyone from the country and knew pretty much nothing about the country except that it is sopousedly "relatively safe". I flew from sweden 2 weeks after deciding I wanted to take a trip somewhere but didnt know where. I decided Africa and between Gambia and Tanzania I chose the latter.
Walking around as a white alone, day or night, is no problem at all as long as you're cool and not a "victim type" or what you can call it, hakuna matata. I just wanted to say this cus you say a white man can't walk around alone in Dar it is far from the truth. Ofcourse you have to be cacious and not naive.
I spent 1 month there living in a "cheap" ($25/night) hotel by Bagamoya Road. I met new people, three I would today call good friends. The second time in 2019 I came and live for free at these 2 friends house, one in Mbezi and the other in Kariakoo.
There wasn't any point where I felt threatened except for once when my friend almost rammed another guy's car outside a club because his gf was getting into somebody's car and he accidentally hit our other friend. Everbody around started gathering and screaming in Swahili, I only understood the cursing so I was getting a little on edge but it was all solved peacefully when people found out we were there together as friends.
    The nightlife is also AMAZING!
Note that this is just my random person's perspective from my 2-3 months in total spending time there and living completely free. In my mind I refeer to Tz like the wild west, it's amazing.
    Bless you, great video.

I am a black man from America who just returned from Dar Es Salam on the 11th of January 2020. I fell in love with this country and its people immediately upon interacting with them. I did not get the impression that Dar was a poor "trailer park" type city. People walking the streets were typically better dressed than I see in Texas (and definitely better than I was), respected everyone else and were extremely proud of their city. Just greeting random people resulted in meeting accountants, students, chefs, real estate professionals, law enforcement, bankers, musicians, historians, engineers, doctors, IT professionals, teachers, and entrepreneurs. These are people just walking the streets or hanging out and they were everywhere! There was a great deal of energy, beauty, and culture everywhere that you looked. I personally discovered that my American sensibilities did not apply in Tanzania and discarded them for the duration of my visit. In many ways, Dar was heaven compared to Texas and I still think about it during every spare moment. What he is showing is an extreme situation that most definitely is not the norm. These are conditions that you will find in any country and there are more of them in America and this guy's country than people realize. Do not believe that these are the typical living conditions in Dar.
The fact is that you are in a different country and you must put everything in the context of where you are, not where you come from, how you believe things should be or what you think you need to show to get a check from TH-cam. If you are going to show one extreme you should also show the other so that people can be informed rather than manipulated into believing the worst. When in Tanzania learn to appreciate the country as Tanzanians do (this means to ask questions and actually listen to the responses). If you attempt to judge by a standard that likely only exists in your mind you will create a damning and unfair picture of others just like the drama queen that posted this video has managed to do.

Europe became rich because of the industrial revolution and enlightenment. African colonies benefitted a few families which treated whites poorly too. Read a history book.

You never see people promoting the ghettos of America on an international stage. It naturally assumed that every country has some unfortunate level of poverty. Therefore, you would generally promote it's potential, and the progress its making in the context of it challenges.

Most of the tourist prefer to have the A List Experience of your typical Vacation, when they visit Africa but the best and most exciting experience is staying in a home in a community. Doing this , will help you understand the African Culture better,( spolier alert) though risky at times, but if you take the right precautions, you'll have a befitting experience. Also you might be an answered prayer to most of the families here, especially the poor ones who work hard and still suffer.

They make up at least 40% of the city dwellers and generally speaking they live in shanties and slums like the one you have seen. It would have been nice if he showed the middle class too. I consider myself middle class and me and my family live in an apartment that cost roughly 280 USD or 600,000 tzs per month (rentals). Now that i truly understand how the economic system works i cannot watch this entire video , even the Europeans who shot this video are unaware of the inner workings of this monetary system that their ancestors spread through the world and how other countries are tied to the main currency now the dollar but in the past the great Britain pound and how other countries have to devalue their currency compared tot he dollar , this creates inequalities in purchasing power and debt to the nations on the top enabling those nations to come in with their higher currencies and purchase natural resources for low prices (example the 35 dollar haircut that in this country would be 1 dollar), they are then able to take these natural resources, refine them into finished products and sell it to their own population to give the countries at the top a higher standard or living ...and.. here is the kicker..also resell the finished product to the resoruce rich but money poor in exchange rate countries.. a economic win win, also some sap who doesnt understand the big picture brings a NON PROFIT AID company into those countries giving away free stuff to needy locals who not knowing that their organization is further destroying the local small business or possible entrepreneur because that person cannot sell to a local when a foreign non profit is giving away that same product free..creating afurther cycle of dependance.. the only hope to this is that throughout human civilization what we call "MONEY" has always changed, we had barter at one point.. so one day there will be another system.. hopefully one whith mo equality built into it, not a have and have nots who both dont understand why one is on top and the other is on the bottom. DO NOT GIVE FREE STUFF TO US "POOR COUNTRIES" instead teach a man to fish and be self sufficient pass along ideas and knowledge or if you give anything give resources that will help that person to make more money when you leave! TEACH THAT MAN TO OPEN HIS OWN GYM AND CHARGE 20 CENTS OR TO TRAIN OTHERS AND GET PAID HE LOOKS LIKE HE IS INTO PHYSICAL FITNESS

"Without him [my guide] it would have been impossible to walk around alone" what precisely do you mean? I lived in Cambodia, Vietnam, etc and never had a problem walking around alone, virtually anywhere. And I do not mean the richest or even middle-class areas. The only contexts where I was careful was if I was using a camcorder (which I rarely did), so is it because of this? What I do in these circumstances is I take my time. First I certainly visit very briefly and certainly without a camera. Then I do as you did, come with a local (who lives in the neighbourhood, as indeed you did). Get introduced to the local leaders - pastors, school teachers etc. Make sure to buy from the local merchants. Not handing out gifts but participating in the enterprise of local commerce. Then the second or third time I might bring a camera, but usually not. Try to build rapport before offering money. But that too, later.
Additionally, is it my imagination or are you avoiding taking video of people's faces? Your choice of how you frame your video is well, cautious. It also seems that 80% of your subjects are male and they are not keen to be photographed. Is there something going on here that I don't understand? Is it you or them? Where are the women and old people?

But because this is new to you and because you are judging them with your Western privileged lens you are trying to create another picture, one of misery, of poverty and dissoluteness where there is none. You are painting an image that says that these people are missing something, that they are deprived of something. And that you being there is a miracle!
