The idea of prototypes is so cool. Think of Leo’s Strat prototypes which were given to musicians to be trialed and played in clubs and bars before they went to market. Players giving feedback about what works, what doesn’t, ideas that make more sense etc. It just seems so great! Especially when the prototypes are kept afterwards, to show the timeline of how things evolved. I remember the Strat prototype had a different trem cavity, before the idea of a a trem cover came into his mind. The journey is as important as the destination, and when we appreciate the things that were kept or dropped on prototype guitars, we get an idea of what could have happened!!!

I bought one of the Gibson USA Curleigh era 2019 Original Collection Les Paul Standard ‘50s Humbucker Gold Top prototypes that appeared in their Reverb Demo Shop when it was initially launched. It’s practically mint and in better shape than many production examples after hanging on the sales walls at G.C.stores. Obviously it’s not a one or two off for a concept model that never made it into production, but it’s still a Les Paul Gold Top from the beginning of a rebirth era that history may look back and smile on down the road. Nonetheless it’s more exciting to have a prototype, even of this boring(?) kind, than any random production example that came from it, and it’s still more unique than one of their Custom Shop guitars, yet it cost less. It’s a Gibson, so I’m not concerned about it’s general value. I’ll always get my money back out of it.

At the ‘08 Summer NAMM show here n Nashville, Taylor debuted a very limited edition SolidBody Classic with a highly figured Bastogne walnut body, that was close to the stump, so all 60 of the bodies had various inclusions to them, meaning chunks, dings, scars etc in them that are just the way the tree was in that section. Through the help of Aaron Dablow at Taylor, I scored #2 in the run, that was featured with the prototype on the back cover of Wood&Steel. Awesome guitar, that I had to sell about four years ago and I still regret it. I’m a sucker for limited edition and prototype instruments.

Could be good or bad but at least rare. I have an offset carved neck prototype that plays like a dream. It seems like that is a mod that didn't catch on. It's still a cool guitar in my rack.

It's the same in the car world. You don't want to buy the new model right away, give them some time to work the bugs out and make the recalls a part of original production and you'll save yourself a lot of headaches.

It’s true. I loved my 99 New Beetle. Years later with a friend we’re discussing our first cars. She has no happy memories of her 1998 New Beetle; nothing but problems. 😔

I've never owned a prototype but I have low or limited production Gibsons. J-29, ES-235 (2) Junior Tribute DC, 2014 Les Paul Melody Maker. They have all increased in asking prices but they are all keepers.

      @cageliner ปีที่แล้ว

@@InjectBleach The biggest annual total Gibson production number I can find is 170,000 units, so no, not millions of any single model per year. The Tribute DC was only produced 2019-2020.

I never think of the resale value. I will hopefully buy a guitar & keep it. I really don't like selling a guitar unless I have an issue with it, & I make sure the issue I have is well known to the buyer.

@Casino Guitars A love song, well, more of a Poem about falling in love at Casino Guitars! It doesn't have correct song structure really but hey, Enjoy!
Orange Gretsch! by Bob Whiting AKA Manmade
I need me an Orange Gretsch
Send my dog out to fetch, me, one.
When I see one I am done
I just gotta, get me one
    Play it, day and night!
Sleep with it, instead of my wife
I just gotta get one, in my life
Orange Gretsch I need you so bad
I'm lust filled, you drive me mad, mad, mad, mad, mad!
    (take it down now)
I'm, gonna go out and go into debt
And she'll be orange and shiny, you can bet
She'll sing like an angel, to make you cry
If I can't have her I know I will die
Orange Gretsch, I need you in my life
Thick and curvy, just like my wife
Lightning and thunder, at the tips of my hands
Sits right in the mix in my new band
I'm gonna go out and go into debt
And fall in love, although we just met
Is this the end, of our love song?
Lady Gretsch, how did we go wrong?
My credit card is full again
I'll come back and play with you, next week end....
    At Casino!
I love you my darling my
    Orange Gretsch
    Girl, Friend...

I liked that Tulip Guitar Gibson released a couple of years ago. I think there were maybe 20 of them. I held out hoping the overlords at corporate would see the logic of releasing something around the cost of a SG. That and there were only 20 of them and I was broke, AGAIN. Still it didn't happen, and I haven't seen one ever.

Bought a 70th Anniversary Broadcaster early in the release. The fret ends are greenish, under the lacquer. Clearly rushed production not letting them completely set before finishing.

I have 3 Fender prototypes that never made it to production. 2 of them I play all the time, but the third, a Flame top Mustang with humbuckers just doesn't do it for me.

    • @caiusmadison2996

Then sell it to me. Nobody understands waiting 50+ years for a unique Mustang... nobody can set them up like me though, where they can compete with their siblings and then some.

      @michaelborn3318 ปีที่แล้ว

@@caiusmadison2996 I would certainly entertain a trade! I so dislike putting a price on stuff like that, but an interesting swap for an amp or guitar would be thought-provoking.

A few years ago in a local overpriced vintage guitar shop I saw a prototype of a guitar I own '86 Gibson Explorer 3, it was absolute junk,it obviously had been a test bed guitar- lots of screw holes and a wonky trem that did not make it into production not worth the £1800.00 they were asking.
