Wow he teaches yoga like a maths teacher in India! If it was India , I’m sure he would have used a Kane! But we love our maths teachers, don’t t we! I love his dedication and passion in teaching yoga! Wish We learnt yoga from such a teacher!!

How come 3 towels are giving natural shape to spine ? What exactly is being acheived by towels ? If we need to support the lumbar area which is lordotic so we need put more padding on lumbar area, here more padding is going on thoracic kyphotic area which is not needed. Any yogi will explain whats going on ?
Hi! The lumbar as you know has a lordotic curvature, and creating this steps helps one to position the pelvis to the lumbar spine in the natural manner with the blanket. The aim of this is not to create a hyper-lordotic curvature but maintain what is natural. Yes if a person has loss of lordosis at the lumbar spine you should add padding, but again you must know that people with a C shaped spine have difficulty in lying down with too much padding and this should be done over time as the thoracic kyphosis also needs to be corrected for that matter. And as you spoke about the manner in which the blankets are being stacked is creating more padding a the thoracic region here, notice the fold of the blanket is made long so that it goes along with the spine that helps to push the thoracic curvature that is kyphotic, to lift the chest and and the arms fall to the sides additionally allow the chest lift action. This brings about horizontal as well as vertical opening the the thoracic cavity to help one take deeper breath during the practice. Try it yourself and see you will understand it better once you practice it.
As a yogi I will not do this padding it hurts my lumbar region. I believe he mentioned to help expand chest to learn pranayama. He explicitly states it. I will not risk my spine in this position for a minute.

So much adulation for him is disconcerting given how abusive and patronizing he could be. We yoga practitioners need to be more honest in our thinking. Yes, he did a ton in terms of his contributions aaaand, he was abused and passed it on. He did not transform it as one would have hoped. Such real transformations do not happen automatically just by doing the practice; we have to be deliberate in healing abuse so we do not pass it on. I just re-read this comment from some time ago and stand by it.
Tough master... most will take it abusive but true students will find it a blessing.
