    Here is a man that takes pride in his work. There is no one in my area like this unfortunately. They all show up and try to sell me a new boiler instead of performing any maintenance. I'm grateful for these videos to help give me confidence to get this job done myself.

    A tip I learned from Mikey Pipes - Hook up an automatic air inflator to the schraeder valve on the tank with the boiler drain open (after draining the boiler) to blow out the water from inside the expansion tank out of the boiler drain to make it way easier to remove without the mess!

    Thank you as I have to change out my expansion tank on my hot water heat system. I discovered 18 months ago when the nozzle plugged up ( I live in a trailer park ) that maintenance was using a 1.85 gallon per hour nozzle in a standard 7 gallon boiler oil fired. I asked to see the plugged nozzle while he went to the truck for a replacement. When he came back in I asked to look at the new one and said wrong nozzle. I asked if he was trying to get me to burn more oil? He said the bigger nozzle did a better job and used less fuel besides he said that is what the boiler calls for. Imagine his surprise when I showed him The manufacturers specifications sticker and pointed out it requires no larger than a 0.85 gallon per hour nozzle. He went back out and got the correct nozzle and installed it and my consumption has decreased by near 40%.
    Then he tells me that 1.85 GPH nozzle is the standard for the entire park! There are 330 units here. When I informed the owner he thanked me but said it didn't matter anymore as he had converted the entire park to propane guns. Yikes! Expensive way to fix a rising cost of fuel that was brought on by a couple of ill informed so called techs.
    I'm in derry, New Hampshire and the coldest it got was -7 for a week and my heating system kept me nice and warm burning one gallon less per hour.
    Ever run into that with your customers?
    Thanks for your informative and entertaining videos.
    Jim

    Good job. I just don't understand why people finish a floor right near a boiler. They can let go at any time and the floor is then junk, especially this engineered flooring today.

    hey steve i really enjoy your videos question
    hi, i've seen videos from expansion tank manufactures [ watts ] who say you have to match the tank pressure with the water pressure in the house. i've never seen a plumber do that infact i have ask many plumbers about it and they never heard of it. is this not necessary?

    We drill a hole in the bottom of the expansion tank, and use a Shop-Vac to suck out the water that's pressurized. Just another way of doing it ...

    steve , something as a tip that might help you when you anticipate a big water mess , try a funnel the same size as when changing the motor oil to capture more water dripping , of course if you have space to use it :)

    Is it normal to have an expansion tank installed opposite (screwed downwards)? My system came with the home when purchased about 2 years ago. I changed the circulator pump, the expansion valve since then. Prior to changing those parts my basement was flooded due to all the pressure. I did the repair myself through these videos. I did have had heat since but during the summer I must have not known how to prep for non use of system. Unsure if I am supposed to drain system when it in use and so forth. I just started the system today for the 1st time since last winter and I have my relief valve letting water out within 3 minutes. What do you suggest it can be? I know the tank is one part I have yet changed since I moved in 2yrs ago. Can it be full of water even if the previous installer placed it upside down unlike how I see them installed regularly. Thanks for your response in advance.

    Why not just push in or remove the Schraeder core then either loosen the tank enough to let air in or drill a small hole in it and drain some of the water out? Seems easier than wrestling with a full tank.

    great job but those come recharged at most 35psi others 60psi and it's suppose to be charged to the psi of the incoming water to the house.

    • @alexgift4023
      @alexgift4023 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      throttle bottle, do most residential dwellings water pressure operate between 12 psi, cause it's usually set for inlet (system) water pressure? It's design is to not allow the expansion to go back, but buffer in the tank. Just curious :)

  • @fiberzip

    what is the correct pressure that needs to be set inside that expansion tank...? is it the same as water pressure coming out garden hose ?

    • @surgio98
      @surgio98 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tank has a guide. You are supposed to match the pressure from water pressure in the same house (yes garden hose) though I have left it at factory without any problems myself.
      Essentially there is a rubber diaphragm with a space for air underneath. As water pressure builds up in your boiler/hot water heater, the air gets compressed in the tank by the expanding water. As
      the water starts moving/cooling the air pushes the water back out of the same opening. It's a safe space where the water can expand without damaging your lines or setting off the relief valve.

    One gallon of water weighs 8.3453 pounds. One cubic foot of water contains 7.48052 gallons. The weight of one cubic foot of water is 7.48052 gallons times 8.3453 pounds, which equals 62.42718356 pounds of water per cubic foot. Why not just drill a 3/8" hole in the bottom of the old tank once the pressure is off?

    can you put a valve before the relief valve, but to take the handle off so it would never be shut off, unless needed to change the valve without draining the whole system? Or is it strictly forbidden to put valves on relief valves and expansion vessels? I am only 19 yo. I am learning new stuff every day.
