The seventh group had only 3 teams and only one team qualified from that group .. Result = 13 teams from Europe in finals + Spain the hosts ..

First football I really remember watching was Aberdeen vs Real Madrid final ('82 I think?) and the World Cup Finals in 1982. Don't remember the qualifying matches at all so this will be interesting.
True. Back then the Scottish league was very competitive it wasnt just Celtic and Rangers but also clubs such as Aberdeen, Dundee United were competing equal for domestic and European titles. Also every best English club of that era that won a cup, league or European title (Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Leeds, Ipswich, Tottenham, Aston Villa) had at least one Scottish international in their squad. I think today if they improve Scottish league structure and become more competitive for more clubs they will have strong teams again in Europe and strong national team.
Scotland 1982 squad was brilliant. The Soviet Union match was unreal. Should have been 2-0 even 3-0 Scotland at half-time, then we let them back in it with that howler between Hanson and Miller. Had we faced Poland and Belgium, that would have been interesting, although Poland had a great side then, too. Hopefully, we see Scotland will be at ALL the Euros and World Cups from now on but the competition is so fierce now, it's anyone's game these days.
Both were quite poor at that time. Scotland were definitely the best side in that group. To be honest, it wasn't the strongest qualifying group for that WC.

was thinking that myself mate so did a little research , Scotland were the first national team to do this, it started in 1979 in a friendly against Peru and was the idea of SFA president Ernie Walker after he was in the states watching NASL games. Think the NI game was probably the last game they did this until it became the norm in the early 90's

Played for a great Liverpool team in two spells and Ipswich Town in two spells,the first time in a great Ipswich team,the second time not so much. He also was in the movie Escape to Victory ✌

Two things I miss are the pipe bands and most of all the square goal posts.

Whilst Hansen wAs great for Liverpool, Hewas average at best for Scotland. Miller, McLeish and Narey were much better defenders for Scotland.

Surprised to see players' names on the back of their shirts in 1981 [v NI]. Thought it didn't start until years later...
