  • This video demonstrates the "Science Kit" Analogue Meter Clock.
This project was inspired by the "Analog meter Arduino Clock" by hamblin.joe on Hackaday.

This version of the clock uses a basic clone Arduino Nano (with USB C), DS3231 real time clock module, two 5V analogue meters,

The total cost, including shipping, taxes, additional components (acrylic, RGB LEDs, etc.) and other sundries came to approximately £10 to £15.
The meters are mounted in a custom clear acrylic laser cut frame that has been formed to provide an upright stand for the clocks.
The advantage of using the 5V meters is that the resistor values do not need to be modified. However, the faces of the meters were replaced to provide clear representation of the current hours and minutes and to apply the custom styling.
A short strip of WS2821B RGB LEDs (made popular by Adafruit's Neo Pixel branding) have been attached to the rear of each meter to allow custom light patterns to be displayed and illuminate the clock faces. In the default configuration this provides a cyclical rainbow pattern which completes every 60 seconds.
The Arduino Nano is programmed with custom firmware that allows a variety of modes to be set using jumpers on the Nano itself. These include configuring 12 or 24-hour mode and the colour of the LEDs.
When connected to a computer, the clock sends its configuration data via a serial connection and can be set by sending the desired UTC UNIX timestamp to the clock. The code converts the time to the current UK time, automatically adjusting for daylight saving time and switching between GMT and BST as appropriate.
The components are wired together using a custom harness allowing easy modification and reconfiguration.

Science Kit is a "brand" that I sometimes use for my more polished projects. The name is inspired by Radio Shack's "Science Fair" brand and the legendary Heath Kit company.
This project was gifted to a colleague, who brought the hamblin.joe clock to my attention.
