Swimming Men's 50m Freestyle - Heats Full Replay from the Aquatics Centre at the London 2012 Olympic Games. -- 2 August 2012
Swimming has featured on the programme of all editions of the Games since 1896. The very first Olympic events were freestyle (crawl) or breaststroke. Backstroke was added in 1904.
In the 1940s, breaststrokers discovered that they could go faster by bringing both arms forward over their heads. This practice was immediately forbidden in breaststroke, but gave birth to butterfly, whose first official appearance was at the 1956 Games in Melbourne. This style is now one of the four strokes used in competition.
Women's swimming became Olympic in 1912 at the Stockholm Games. Since then, it has been part of every edition of the Games. The men's and women's programmes are almost identical, as they contain the same number of events, with only one difference: the freestyle distance is 800 metres for women and 1,500 metres for men.

Watching the first few heats and looking at the times, by comparison to the average swimmer these guys are fast and people would love to have times like these. Of course they are slow by the Olympic champions standards and I am faster but these guys come from countries with a much much lower standard of training equipment and coaching, some from really disadvantaged countries, yet they can do better than many of the masters and swimmers in the richer countries. Personally, saying that you are faster and did 19.6 and you’re a tadpole or something is just diminishing the effort and commitment that these athletes go through, many of whom probably hold down jobs alongside training whereas Michael Phelps solely trained. These guys deserve as much if not more admiration and respect than the champions and they should serve as an inspiration for us all, that no matter who or where you are, hard work pays off.

The swimmers in the first 2 heats will fail to qualify to the final of inter-school competitions in my country, and my country has a grand total of 2 olympics swimming medals in the history of the game. It's unfair to those who have much better time but denied entry into olympics.

+Kristjan It's so that people from different countries can participate. I like that the Olympics allows these people to compete. It could make more people in lesser developed countries have an interest in these sports. It's not all about winning.
