    so is this technically a dco (digital controlled oscillator)?

    • @JHJLIM
      @JHJLIM 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess technically yes!
      But in the same way that an analogue oscillator being frequency controlled from a quantiser or digital sequencer is a DCO.
      The pitch controls are all analogue. 1V/Oct summing with shared analogue references which can then be biased via parallel digital controlled offsets.
      Audio signal path is entirely analogue which was an important factor to me :)
      The VCAs are digitally controlled, but again in the same way that patching a digital envelope generator module to a VCA is!

    • @MnemoLogic
      @MnemoLogic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JHJLIM Yeah it’s a complex term, thank you for your explanation! People often say in general DCO doesn‘t sound as good as analogue VCO but they often don‘t know the differences and the many ways how you can design a dco.

    I'm interested in harmonizing and I was thinking if I can make this kind of module, but it already exists :)
    Have you (or anyone) tried to make intervals by math (cv utility) modules?

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  ปีที่แล้ว

      "make intervals by maths" just adding voltages together do you mean?
      Gut reaction ... check out Tonic by Rebel Technology, that might be what you mean. But I aren't sure.

    • @nunomollc
      @nunomollc ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DivKid Thanks, and yes that was what I meant. Having multiple of this module to build up chord looks interesting but it will eat a lot of spaces..

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  ปีที่แล้ว

      You could use a matrix mixer to serve four channels of quantising. I'd set this up as follows.
      4 gate signals into the 4 inputs.
      4 outputs to 4 channels of quantising (to set it into a key)
      4 quantiser outputs to feed your VCO 1v/oct inputs. Start with all oscillators in (as perfect) sync/tuning as you can.
      Play with the level of the gates coming into the matrix mixer and adjust what voltage that gate reaches on each channel. As different gates stack up at different voltage levels you'll get new notes forming and if you set the channels to different levels your intervals will spread out and contract back in varying levels.
      You'd likely need to attenuate the gates prior to the mixer or attenuate the outputs before the quantiser to allow for more control range on the matrix mixer controls.
      When I think through that and other potential ideas they all need a lot of modules. Which I enjoy, it's modular, uses modules patched up to create signal flows and to solve problems if fantastic. But it does drive home how something like Tonic makes it a lot easier and less HP, even with multiple of them.

    • @nunomollc
      @nunomollc ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DivKid I see, use of audio signal bus as CV shows how flexible modular is! I assume Eurorack mixers are DC coupled so I can imagine it will work. Thanks for showing your idea!

    is there any way to seperate the bass/root from the quad VCA, to apply distortion and such only on the bass?

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello, there's no splitting of the voice on the module it's all on a single output. You could approach the output as a multi band thing though and use filtering to split off and re focus certain voices (presuming the pitches were far enough away to get some separately filtered sounds) for distortion and processing. But as it's saw waves there's lots of harmonic overlap between the voices.

    • @MoechtegernPimP
      @MoechtegernPimP 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DivKid Thanks for the response. I wonder if there is a less destructive option or similar modules that allow to seperate the sub or root voice?

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's nothing that can intelligently pull apart a chord tone into it's separate notes. As I saw the harmonics in a saw wave will overlap will all the other notes.
      Unless Instruo have the option to expand the circuit specifically to output the separate voices. But there's been no mention of that when I've spoke to them.

    • @JHJLIM
      @JHJLIM 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      A good bit more than 60-70 unfortunately...
      There are some fine tolerances and some tight placement/routings on this one.
      I actually had to go 3 board construction to better isolate power traces and isolate the cores physically to get the best shared temperature compensation possible.
      Managed to keep it super skiff friendly though! So it’s not actually any deeper than my other single board layouts.
      It’s not a cheap module. But there is a lot of precision to the assembly needed and unfortunately supply chain and various production costs have increased in COVID times. This of course having a knock on effect to final pricing after wholesale and distribution margins etc are factored in.
      It’s thanks to the amazing support to those out there using my modules that I’m able to continue investing my resources into designing and producing wacky oscillators 😀🙏

      The Doepfer A111-4 isn’t much cheaper, from what I can see. That has individual waveform outputs, which would be more flexible in some ways, but it lacks all the VCA/crossfader functionality, the sub waves, and the diatonic Easter egg mode. It’s also larger, and while I don’t mind the Doepfer aesthetic as much as some, the Instruo is definitely a lot prettier! This packs a lot of rich-sounding VCOs and practical functionality into a fairly compact and not-unreasonably priced (by Euro analogue standards) module, so it’s good to have the choice.

      @DivKid  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jed, of course that would be useful but for each demo I don't set up a specific case that's set to show all of what's happening. If I need to grab say a sample and hold that might be 2 cases stacked on top of each other away from the module.
      Instead I focus on the module and talk about what's important. So if I was to say "plugging an LFO in here does XYZ" then really what LFO that is isn't important all. Same if I was demoing a filter and said "plugging in an envelope to the CV input" what envelope that is really isn't important and it's all transferable to envelopes people may have.
      I can totally appreciate seeing everything and following cables aids the learning potential of the videos though. Do ask questions and feedback where you like as I do take it on board. Thanks!

Both really intelligently laid out modules that both feature smart crossfading between oscillators.
