Pomeranians have a soft, cottony undercoat that sheds. The longer outer coat is the permanent hair that grows much slower and at different rates. That is the part of their coat that should never be shaved and at best just trimmed here and there as needed to even out their overall look for uniformity. The biggest issue I see with my Pomeranian is coat care in regards to regular brushing. It is the number one best way to prevent coat issues. However it should be done regularly yet sparingly. Poms can be over brushed as well which can cause coat issues such as skin disorders and patchiness. They require special brushing techniques which is basically picking and not true brushing. You do not brush straight through their coats the same as you brush long human hair You pick. Basically go down and up in small patches one at a time. Best I've found is to use a pin brush. Use the shoft short bristle type brush first to align the fur hairs gently. Then with the wire pin bristle side (often these pin brushes come with both types two sided). This technique is more gentle and appropriate for Pomeranian's double coat. Ideally every three days. But I've found I can stretch it to once every two weeks at times depending on how bad mine sheds and what his coat is doing at the time. There are going to be matts. It happens. Just cut them out or shave if they do not come out easily enough. Spot cutting of matts should not affect their coat or appearance if done properly and sparingly. A big issue I see with Pomeranians is the lack of understanding that they will need regular, lifelong coat care. These types of dogs with this specialized fur are easy to be neglected by ignorant owners. Start the pup out early with regular grooming sessions to get them accustomed. Even when they resist and refuse, lovingly remind your pup that you care enough about them to groom them so they can be healthy, happy, and look their best! ❤
As a professional certified groomer I’m very sorry they had to do this, but did they discuss if there were mats on the dogs? If there were that’s the only option unfortunately if they aren’t regularly groomed and brushed. It’s a very thick and dense coat that is very high maintenance. To anyone wondering about their pomeranians or similar type dogs make sure you have a full discussion of what you want and go to a reputable groomer who’s got good ratings and reviews. I would stay far away from pet store groomers. Try to tell a groomer to tighten up the coat if you want them fluffy but manageable, it’s usually called a modified show clip, where they are scissored and trimmed up where you don’t effect the hair that protects them. Try to just emphasise NO Clippers.

Yes! That's exactly what I'm doing. Poms don't need traditional "haircuts" as do some breeds. Simply brush them every day. You can trim their nails yourself, or get a nail grinder. The hair between their pads can be clipped away. Use a good leave-in conditioner before brushing and combing. You can also clip their "private" areas for a sanitary trim if you wish at home. Good thing they grew back perfectly. I also have the same problem but not with a groomer. My pom had a dental cleaning and the vet shaved the right foot all the way down to the skin to inject a catheter. I know that’s required but i’m just scared the hair might not grow back
Omg thanks so much for this video. I couldn't find anything online to really show and dive in on the topic. My baby has only been groomed once when he was 8 months. But I took him to groomer and they shaved him way lower than I asked. They said it was too patchy they had to go lower . My baby is cold and seems sad and low energy. It may be a long shot of you see this but did you use any product on their coats to promote growth .
I also have a parti color black and white pomeranian, when we go to his groomer i make it crystal clear to never ever ever shave my pom, thanks for posting this! BTW did you add anything to them like vitamins to have their fur back or you just patiently waited for the fur to grow?
Ancient post but I wanted to answer... we didn't give them anything. Our vet is against a lot of those products because there's no research to support that they help, and some of them can have additives that aren't tested for safety. Since they're not regulated the same way human meds are, there's a lot of not-great stuff that can be advertised and sold as good for dogs even if it's not. If you're concerned, ask your vet and see if they know of a treatment they can recommend.
Poms are a double coated breed which means they have a soft undercoat and guard hair for the outer coat. They need both coats to protect them from being too cold in the harsh winter months and from sunburn in the summer. Which is why they should NEVER be shaved. Scissor trim for neatness. Otherwise they can get what they call clipper alopecia. Their coats may grow back in but never the same as their natural coats. Don’t use pet shop groomers get recommendations for a groomer who knows how to scissor trim. Some pet store groomers are just outright lazy and instead of scissor trim they pick up the clippers and shave regardless of what the client wants.
Did you trim them at all during this time or do anything special to get it to grow back? My pom's hair is a mess right now because I didn't know any better ( was a new pom mom), and I'm just wondering if there is anything else I should be doing to help it grow back.
Hi this just happened to our Pom at the groomers. We were in shock. Did the regrown hair ever regain its original texture or at least close to its texture?
I took my 4 months old Pomeranian for her first haircut and the groomer shaved her just like your babies. I am really worried that she won’t be as fluffy like before. Any advice
My puppy Pom is 4 months as well and I took her to a nearby park and she had a run in with a thistle/thorn bush. The vet spent 2 hours trying to remove each one but it was not enough because there was so much and each one was entangled and poking at her skin. They ended up shaving her and now that winter is coming I’m extremely stressed. Could you please update me on your dogs status? And how to take care of her in this time ?
WOAHHH!! I'm happy they recovered. 0.0 I take my Medical SD to a breed specific groomer. To avoid this. I heard horror stories of how some groomers just do the shave. The place I got him, said that the shave can make his hair come back looking like mange. He has a summer cut but it stays.... way ahead of the fur level it needs to be. Not to damage it. Its done with scissors. The winter is just a trim.
I have a little white pom that looks just like Taffy. I was told you couldn't shave them like that because they have a double coat and the hair will never grow back quite like it was. But they both look good.
I have one Pomeranian whom I shaved before I knew about this nightmare and another as well. One has a gorgeous coat and shaving her doesn't affect her coat at all. Sadly the other one, with just one time being shaved, is still very patchy in getting his coat back after several years. I am going to try the suggestions made in this video.
I just shaved my Pom bc she rolled in deer poop in the backyard where the pine trees are - it was so bad it was matted into the undercoat . She was still stinky and sticky after two baths so I shaved her as a last resort. Then I read that the fur will never be the same... I feel horrible and scared - I hope that her fur will have the guard hairs and the colors it had before ... your dogs seem ok... fur the same as before?
Highly thanks for asking! It has been almost a year and the coat is looking great. I am good at grooming dogs and since I shaved it so evenly all over, it grew back very even without looking nappy. She blew out her summer undercoat, so now the guard hairs are more prominent again. She is not full Pom (3/4 Pom and 1/4 min pin) so her fur wasn’t as long and thick as a full blooded Pom, but it was a long wait and I won’t shave her again. I really missed her wild fluffy wolfy look. She seems happier with her coat back too.
Highly fur has grown back evenly and really nicely. She shed more undercoat bc it is summer but I bet by October she looks fluffy again. It took about a year plus. Prob won’t do it again if I don’t have too!
Where you are playing footsie, Taffy on floor, looks matted , pom hair mats easily, have to. run comb every day down to skin not just surface. Let groomer show mats & state has to be shaved. Badly matted is painful to brush out.
Thanks for shared your experience, i had the Bad idea to cut My pom's hair and many people tell me "oh My god it's so Bad his hair never grow up" i feel so sad for this :(
Hi! I got my 9 month old shih Tzu shaved last evening because his coat had a lot of knots. The groomer suggested we shave him completely. I went with it and I feel so so so terrible now. My Fudge had the best, fluffiest coat in the world and he's been so uncomfortable since yesterday. I hope I haven't ruined his life ! I don't even know if his fur will grow back like before. I'm just trying to keep him happy and engaged through the day and he wears a sweater now because it's winter in India. Anyone knows anything about shihtzu coats? Thanks for your video, it gave me hope that the fur does come back.
Pomeranians should NEVER be clippered, they actually have a TRIPLE coat, the one closest to the skin is the 'ancient, primitive' coat. Pomeranians also are difficult to groom, you run the risk of too aggressive brushing, thinking it's matted, all the while you will actually be damaging the inner most 'primitive' coat. Samoyeds, Chows, Huskies all have triple coats. For more information may I refer all to 'Groomer to Groomer', Groomer's Guide to 'Grooming the Primitive Coat', it's an indepth read and I advise anyone with one of these breeds to fully read and understand that article.
when I put pyjamas or another type of clothing on my tiny pom (he's not shaved} he calms down. He doesn't play as much when clothes are on him. I think that is why you find that your doggies don't play as much or seem tired etc now. It's not their body temperature but it's the clothing that makes our doggies calm down . That is what I have discovered anyway. I only put clothes on him occassionally cuz I love to pet his long hair. But I am thinking of a lion cut because he gets a messy bottom a lot even though hair is shaved around his backside. Im going to leave it for now and think about it more. Id have to have clothing on him as you do, if he got a lion cut unless it was a warm day.
Poms have a insulating undercoat that should not be shaved. It could lead to alopecia. A reputable groomer with experience will know this. Ask questions before you leave your pup with anyone to get groomed. 😁👍 Oh...and I'm so glad your pups regained their fluff!! ❤️❤️
The craziest thing an owner could do to a breed like this, when the Pomeranian coat is the safest thing they have due to temperatures, scratches of any kind and even burns caused by heat just for the sake of aesthetics... believe me, that fur will no longer grow back again, because shaving it already burns the primary part of the hair layer, but hey.. Well, you were hurting the poor dogs... My lord.. That was an error
I hope you dont take them back to the groomer which Im sure you wont. thanks for posting this cause I will not take my pom, Banjo, to a groomer after seeing this. I was thinking of taking him in our summer which can get extremely HOT, but Im not going to now.
Hi I hope that someone can reply to this. I recently had a similar experience with my Pom but I don’t think it’s as severe as yours was. They shaved her leaving just a thin layer of the dense coat and I’m worried that she won’t be able to keep cool as the hot season approaches. I was just wondering what you did to treat your poms or if you just let them be.
Our dogs are indoor dogs, so it wasn't much of an issue, as our apt is air conditioned. I think keeping cool is less difficult than keeping warm, at least for my dogs. You should definitely talk to a vet if you have concerns though
@@rachelh3462 I called and complained. I wasn't rude or irate about it, but I let them know what happened so they can coach their workers and make sure it doesn't happen to someone else.
Just happened upon this video. Why did U allow your little pup to constantly jump and struggle to get on a bed it can't possibly reach? Very concerning! 😢
As I understand it, there are multiple kinds of pomeranians? Bubbles is usually what people think pomeranians look like. Taffy doesn't have that same mass of floof. The vet says it's cause she's a shorter haired pom. She doesn't get that round shape at all.
@@jayleevt I see! The two differences I've heard of are pet quality (less mass of floof) and show quality, like Bubbles. I guess it's just different names for that. :)
@@madelinebrooks4726 that makes sense! Lol my vet might have been trying to be polite and didn't want to say taffy wasnt show quality 😂 😂 bubbles is a very prissy princess.... Makes sense she'd be the fancy dog 😉

It’s been 3 years and my poor Kya’s back fur is not growing in at all 😭 You are so lucky! Her front legs grow like crazy so I only have that part groomed and she got a little fuzzy around her head but that’s about it. I’m thinking about suing the Groomer. He assured me that he only used shears and that it would grow back. I’m still so heartbroken 😞💔 I miss her long, flowy, silky fur. The Groomer who did it works at Jungle Pet Spa in LA. It’s a mobile spa and he’s worked on Poms before so I trusted him. I wish I never brought Kya to him 😢😡
Joanna Makowski have you brought your pup to the vet? The science doesn’t back the claim that clippers or scissors or any other form of hair cutting can affect the growth of the hair itself. In situations such as yours, the truth is that your pup likely has an underlying condition called alopecia or perhaps a thyroid condition or something else going on that was affecting the hair growth. You just didn’t know it before the haircut and the cut made it more obvious. You can sue but you won’t win because your groomer is not responsible for your dog having a medical problem that affects hair growth. You didn’t disclose that to him (obviously you did not know) so he was unable to give you the best possible advice. That’s on you. As much as it sucks. If anything, maybe sue your vet or your breeder for not making sure your dog was actually healthy. Especially if you have one of the many genetic forms of hair growth issues. I’m kidding about suing, of course. Honestly, at the end of the day, your dogs health is more important than the look. I’d chalk it up to a win since now you realize there is a medical condition you need to nail down and treat. Just get your pup healthy and the coat will come in. Unless it’s a genetic condition, then be pissed that your breeder
@KC Danny hey so since my post I’ve been giving her 3 mg of melatonin 3x’s a day (she is 4lbs) and flaxeed with lignans mixed in her food once a day followed by a medicated shampoo and Hylyt conditioner once a week and her fur has grown back for the most part. The dark skin that was forming has sloughed off. She’s much healthier looking! Just a little short on her back and tail still but the rest of her has fluffed out. Hope that helps!
We didnt want them shaved 😔 there was a mistake at the groomers. We asked for a hygiene trim and they came back completely shaved. It was awful. This video is an update because I made one a year ago about how miserable they were, and I wanted to show their progress 💕
Lol so CUTE tho! I took my long haired dog in once. He had this kinda cool wavy ish hair and the new guy gave him a blow out that made him puff up in such a weird way his fur never went back to normal
@@missyb1020 Good to hear that the coat is still soft to the touch. Unfortunately, my pom Albert's topcoat grew back wiry and coarse. I'm doing web searches to see if there are products out there to help his coat become softer. I saw one suggestion that is a homemade solution that contains almond oil. We shall see...
If it helps, we took them to the groomers for 4 years with no issues until this event. If you are very worried, take them to a groomer that's attached to a vet clinic. We went to petsmart. They're usually good but I doubt a vet clinic's groomer would ever allow someone to order a cut that harms their dog
If you brush your pomeranian husky mix you should have no problem. Much like any dog owner be responsible; brush with a slicker brush and metal comb... shave downs tend to happen when a dog is matted.
Man. I'm worried my Black Male pom 14 months has been scratching since I got him. From a friend stationed to Germany. I'm scared he keeps going he will be with no fur. Hes lost lots to see skin underneath. No fleas I see. No dry skin I see. He does have his testes stuck never dropped so when i get him seen I'll ask about his fur. I am trying to get his records but they misplaced I guess. I'm hoping they can transfer or get the docs from his vet they saw via phone or email. Joda is his name. They gave him to me after spending about a grand on him. I offered to pay but they knew I was still recovering and still now trying to recover after a year of losing Annie my baby girl toy poodle. That's a long story but it hurt me bad. 10 years since she was a pup I had her in my apmt her and I. Walked played went through divorce with me an ex. Man it was rough. Anyway my daughter and I brought her to vet again from breathing head up and not moving much. Had already had infections and pyomthria ...the pyo was 3 years ago and after they took all her girl stuff out she got sicker ...Skin issues. Then coughing. Then breathing issues. A couple of seizures. I took her 20 times to vet in 3 years. The last visit they took her to the back and said to come back she collapsed and so I did. I saw her laying there. They weren't trying to CPR but faked some some. Had a syringe that they never used. I dont know for sure. But I think they killed her. Or fear killed her. She was weak. I cried. A grown man. In front of God and everyone. I cried. I dont know ......Anyway I was grieving. A friend posted Joda and I said I'd take him in fear someone not taking care of him. Well. I forgot and was done by then I wasn't ready. But xmas came eve. And dropped him off as gift. Soon as they left he went nuts. There I was still missing annie. With a new pup dying for attention. He is wild. But hes learned alot. We are doing great. And here I am worried already about him. With loss of annie I'm scared of everything.

I give mine coat supplements they have oils you can add to their food or chews. I use chews
I hate owners who shave spitz dogs to wear dresses on them. Just buy a shorthair dog if you don't like dogs with fluffy fur.
My pomeranian was shaved down to the skin. It never grew back. Will never let that happen again..
Hi this just happened to our Pom at the groomers. We were in shock. Did the regrown hair ever regain its original texture or at least close to its texture?
This is what I want too know! The groomer shaved my baby down now I am extremely sad
@@blueyezzz did it grow? how is the texture? Thank you in advance for your answer
I took my 4 months old Pomeranian for her first haircut and the groomer shaved her just like your babies. I am really worried that she won’t be as fluffy like before. Any advice
Any update?
My puppy Pom is 4 months as well and I took her to a nearby park and she had a run in with a thistle/thorn bush. The vet spent 2 hours trying to remove each one but it was not enough because there was so much and each one was entangled and poking at her skin. They ended up shaving her and now that winter is coming I’m extremely stressed. Could you please update me on your dogs status? And how to take care of her in this time ?
WOAHHH!! I'm happy they recovered. 0.0
I take my Medical SD to a breed specific groomer.
So what's the update on your dog?
Thanks for shared your experience, i had the Bad idea to cut My pom's hair and many people tell me "oh My god it's so Bad his hair never grow up" i feel so sad for this :(
They need brushing everyday....
My dogs back hair didn’t grow back;(
Tragic. And so unnecessary. Groomers need to be educated about the Pomeranian breed!
BTW, my pom's back hair only grew back to 1 1/2 inches, and the topcoat/guard hairs are very very coarse.
Six years ago a groomer shaved my Pom's beautiful coat though I told her not to and her coat has never recovered. Still pisses me off:(
Oh my, I am both sad and ANGRY. Angry at that groomer.
We have a male named Marlo that looks almost just like Taffee.
Ask for a master groomer
I have a rescue who had to be partially shaved for surgery and it grew back fine.
Shih tzu is not double coated fur. its okay to be shaved. Shih tzu are fast fur grower. Pomeranian's are double coated.
I just shaved my Pom yesterday because his skin got dermatitis. Today I know I so stupid. I hope his skin can return like your kids!
Hi , does it grow back?
Oh...and I'm so glad your pups regained their fluff!! ❤️❤️
Can anyone help my pekes tail hair won’t grow back it’s been months 😖
Any update?
I saw holiday puppy robes at Target and thought of your bbs. 🥰
Jaylee James thank you. Also do you think I should make a complaint or just leave the situation be
@@rachelh3462 I called and complained. I wasn't rude or irate about it, but I let them know what happened so they can coach their workers and make sure it doesn't happen to someone else.
Jaylee James Thank you so much!
There harness went 4 sizes down
Just happened upon this video. Why did U allow your little pup to constantly jump and struggle to get on a bed it can't possibly reach? Very concerning! 😢
I would never go back to the groomer that shaved my Pom. I have had three Poms and did not shave any of them. Sometimes their hair won't grow back.
Thanks for sharing, they also shaved my Pom last month I was so upset
I'm so sorry Taffy and Bubbles were shaved like that! I have a question though: what do you mean by short-coated and long-coated?
@@jayleevt That could totally be the case! I've got a show-quality pomeranian called Wolfie (his puppy picture is my avatar actually), and he's DEFINITELY prissy.
I heard the teddy bear cut its good for a Pomeranian I am getting a Pomeranian tomorrow
Can not believe that the dog was in pain cause it got shaved. Sorry. Start brushing. Pomeranians don't usually need to be groomed. From Germany 🇩🇪
They probably had less energy cause they felt weird wearing the clothes.
Bruh I wouldn’t leave my pup alone to be shaved. Watch them
It’s been 3 years and my poor Kya’s back fur is not growing in at all 😭 You are so lucky!
Why did you shave them in winter and not in summer time?
We didnt want them shaved 😔 there was a mistake at the groomers. We asked for a hygiene trim and they came back completely shaved. It was awful. This video is an update because I made one a year ago about how miserable they were, and I wanted to show their progress 💕
Those groomers are idiots.
Indian TechSupport Yea I agree with you!🙄
love the m the music!!
Lol so CUTE tho! I took my long haired dog in once. He had this kinda cool wavy ish hair and the new guy gave him a blow out that made him puff up in such a weird way his fur never went back to normal
Missy B Hi. How much time did it take to grown the hair back??
@@lirvabbeydawn over a year
@@missyb1020 Oh my sad. Did it grow back more or less normal? Or was the hair rough to the touch and coarse?
@@audreybeale it was odd but still fairly soft. It is a lot better now 🙂
@@missyb1020 Good to hear that the coat is still soft to the touch. Unfortunately, my pom Albert's topcoat grew back wiry and coarse. I'm doing web searches to see if there are products out there to help his coat become softer. I saw one suggestion that is a homemade solution that contains almond oil. We shall see...
The experience you went through with your babies
Really has me scared now to take my two-month-old Pomsky tooo the groomer
If it helps, we took them to the groomers for 4 years with no issues until this event. If you are very worried, take them to a groomer that's attached to a vet clinic. We went to petsmart. They're usually good but I doubt a vet clinic's groomer would ever allow someone to order a cut that harms their dog
If you brush your pomeranian husky mix you should have no problem. Much like any dog owner be responsible; brush with a slicker brush and metal comb...
shave downs tend to happen when a dog is matted.
Never shave your Pom !!
Sometimes if dog has lice and can't get rid of it you should make it bald
I have a pomeranian and I like her coat shaved down .we live at the beach she likes to get in the water roll in the sand .I personally like her hair shaved
We shave our po.s down every 4 weeks we live in the south at the beach where the dogs constaky in the sand and water pool they like short hair If it does get cold here I put sweaters on the. They arw just fine I will contine to shave them
Shaving a pomeranian should be a punishable offense
Dude they looked matted
Bubbles goes boing boing boing
I'm so glad there hair grew back❤
I need that for my Pomeranian cuz we can't get rid of it's fleas
Well use dawn dishsoap as shampoo don’t shave them it’s been many months and my peke’s tail hair won’t grow back
That’s not the only way. My Pom had fleas & I tried for awhile to get rid of them & I eventually did! Didn’t have to resort to shaving. Just have to find the right flea treatments.
I second using dawn dish soap as shampoo for Pomeranians. I haven’t had any problems with fleas in months. It works better than any flea shampoos that I’ve used.
Yay
So Cute 😍
Lmao wow… the dog nutters get more and more unstable.
I’m thinking the dogs are the smart ones in this whole situation
Stupid question Why didn’t they just wait till spring to scalp the dogs These dogs are just an accessory for this woman And then she gets to go out and buy them cute outfits Just ignorant
