    As an expatriate Glaswegian, I find your series both nostalgic and educational. Your research is first class. To think I walked past most of the sites for years and was unaware of the history. Love yir Glesca humour tae!!
    Awrabest!

    Honestly, as a tourist I would love to see this in person. To me it shows the beauty of humanity and it's defiance to what it deems to be unjust authority.

    I tried climbing that statue in the days before the cone (the Pre-Cone Era, or PCE?) as a drunken student. I got halfway up one of the legs, it's quite a climb!

    I think I could probably bring the cone down with a long pole for 5,000 a year.

      I could do it for 4,950.

    If the council had any brains they would glue the cone on permanently, that would solve the pathetic safety issues and frustrate the drunks.
    BTW is that still a library behind the statute?

    • @AstonishingGlasgow
      @AstonishingGlasgow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Its a good idea but the statue is a grade A listed monument so it cant be altered by the council. The building behind started life as the home of Tobacco lord William Cunningham before it was converted into Glasgow's Royal exchange. It was the Stirling library until it opened as the Gallery of modern art in 1996.

    Now I know what your cone is for.

    Toronto renamed Ryerson university to the Met. University and "Dundas Street" is facing the same pressure to change all its signage, and including the transit maps could be millions.
    I wish we could just Pylon it...

    Always a highlight and must see on any visit to Glasgow. Leaving the cone likely prevents anyone else from climbing up too.

      The catch 22 for the council is leave it up there and if the cone falls it could badly injure the person it lands on or take it off and somebody falls trying to put it back. They also cant install the cone permanently as its a listed monument so cant be modified.

    So, if the "rules" are the same in Scotland, this Duke died of old age, as his horse stands on its 4 legs ?

    • @AstonishingGlasgow
      @AstonishingGlasgow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats a great point I hadn't thought of. He died at 83 from the effects of a stroke so it looks like the rules do apply here.

      Yes, the duke did not die in battle

    The council would be wise to consider attaching a permanent cone on the statue rather than this nonsense about raising the plinth.

    Wellington's statue should be removed from Glasgow, thousands of Scots and Irish died at Waterloo, what happened to their bodies, dumped in a mass grave with the dead French, German and English soldiers, years later Wellington's land, and lands of the gentery needed fertiliser so they dug up the remains ground up their bones and used the gallant heroes to enrich their soil to grow more crops for profit, the great hero Wellington is hated Scots, and Irish, especially Irish Catholics, he said that the commen soldiers were the scum of the earth and they were treated as such, so why do we in our beautiful city allow statues of criminals to exist in this present day, pull them down and erect the real heroes of our country, men of the H.L.I. women who worked in the NHS, and the Fire service, Wellington even denied his own birth place, he said that he was born in the piggery but that doesn't mean he is one of the pigs, he denies his own country, so why should wee have the monster in our city, no more false heroes we have a good long list of our own woman and men to choose from, pull the foreigners down and get the real heroes in place in glasgow.

      Wellington is the greatest field marshal of the british army and one of the greatest military leaders of all time he is a legend of this country. He has won britian countless battles and played a very important role in the history of this country and to suggest he's a criminal and a bad person is obsurd. Yes he was a cold hearted man but it doesn't degrade his contribution to this country. Also i don't believe in giving everybody who's done good deeds a statue but those who have made history like wellington did. Also you say he called his soldiers "scum of the earth" if you did reserarch youd know he was talking about looters in his own army, because soldiers in his army stole from those they were fighting to protect so he called them sum of the earth, the audacity you have to disrespect a legend by misinterpreting what he said and the meaning behind it is disgusting, you are filth Show some respect.

      Utter revisionist and selective view of history. Karl Marx, a man who's ideology is responsible for millions of deaths, has a grave and memorial in Highgate cemetery, should it also be flattened?

    Interesting videos. It's a shame you've let left wing, neo-marxist, revisionist politics creep into this one.

      I think you need to watch it again. I dont promote any political view, I only mention that there is more than one opinion on the subject and it is up to the viewer to work out what their politics are.

    Think it's an absolute disgrace that the Scottish Government allows this fine statue to continue to be desecrated. Sturgeon is a cretin.
