    What a horse. I remember his first novice chases and his win in the Reynoldstown at Ascot. He was exceptional and this showed just how exceptional he was, outpacing specialist 2 milers around cheltenham. Winning that hennessey made everyone believe he was a stayer but his pace was exceptional and he fenced much faster than staying chasers. I truly loved thus horse and the joy of his achievement here was wiped out by his demise at Aintree. So sad and dark a day. I'm so pleased to see this upload. It's fab to see him at his best. Thanks so much.

      IMO, Ryanair Chase would have been a much more suitable target for One Man, had the race already been there then. Besides, don't look down upon either Viking Flagship or Klarion Davis, which were pretty hard to take on at their prime.

    I’m one of the horses biggest fans ! Since I saw him at wetherby in 94 ! But imagine if there’d been a Ryanair chase back then he’d have won 4/5 of them ! Don’t think he would have won multiple champion chases as that years crop weren’t the best as the Viking flagships and Klaproth Davis we’re on the backend of their careers ! Didn’t get 3m+ on that track but he’d have been a monster over 2m4/5f. Just a shame what happened to him !

      The other thing was to look how much condition he was carrying. He looked 50kg heavier than most of his rivals. I think that's one of the reasons his stamina went down as he got older, he really filled out.

    The ride Dunwoody gave One Man in the 1997 Gold cup was absolutely superb creeping nearer with each fence but he ran out of petrol at the last when in second.....but this race was sensational

    • @acf171072
      @acf171072 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      dlamiss The more I watch One Man I don't think it was stamina. He won a Hennessy in soft ground as a 6yo over 3m2f pulling the proverbial truck. You don't go from that to not getting home in his third KG. For me his problem was he had one acceleration gear and once that was gone he emptied, but you needed to use his high cruising speed. If he'd just ridden OM in 1997 like he rode him in the Sandown KG and let him take over at half way (not dissimilar to Denman in 2008) and got the others going at his pace, nothing would have got near him. He slaughtered the best 2m horses at his natural pace, the best 3m horses would have had no chance. Look at him at the end of this video, he's treading water at the end of 2m, it's because he was asked the question turning in, sprinted away but then emptied. He was just far enough clear for it not to matter. It was all psychological with him. Remember what happened when they held Crisp up in the Gold Cup, found nothing, yet he nearly won a National. Again, it was all in the natural cruising speed.

    • @davebesag
      @davebesag 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If he been given ten stone in the Gold Cup like he was in the Hennessy then he might have won in 1997. One Man's record at Cheltenham away from the Champion Chase wasn't great. A dismal run in the 1994 Sun Alliance Chase when favourite, twice well beaten in the Gold Cup and struggling to hold off a rallying Barton Bank in an effective match race in the Cotswold Chase.
      I also don't think One Man would have been going away from Mr Mulligan, Dublin Flyer and Barton Bank at halfway in the 1997 Gold Cup. They seemed to be going pretty quickly (as pointed out by Simon Holt in commentary).

    • @mervyncharter717
      @mervyncharter717 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Excellent point totally agree. I will also add that he won the king george run at sandown with its uphill finish and the tommy whittle chase at the old haydock course both on soft ground. Gordon richards always used to say that one day he would throw him in a 4 miler at haydock and he would win.

  • @goonervillegonad3662

    Supreme traveller. He was stopping here after two miles though! Not sure he enjoyed feeling the burn at the end of his races, but his speed and fluency tended to kill them off on flat tracks.

    The Racing Post were brutal in their comments on Ask Tom's performance "With regard to Ask Tom, Tom Tate's subsequent explanation to the stewards that he had had an interrupted preparation may help account for his failure to last home, but in failing to highlight the problem in the build-up to the race the trainer did punters a gross disservice."

    Brian Harding won a Hennessy at Newbury, but John Hales, the owner, wanted Dunwoody, who rode him regularly until this race. Dunwoody was good but One Man was always brilliant with Harding. I always believe Harding should have ridden him all the time, but Dunwoody's riding of Desert Orchid influenced Hales (I believe). Had Harding kept the ride and they had instigated the Ryanair Chase at that time, One Man would have dominated that. However, his Hennessy win was on a flat 3m 2f at Newbury. Perhaps Harding would have won a Gold Cup on him?
