My daughter did a DNA test and found out that there wasn't native American DNA like the family stories said, but she did find that she had DNA linked to a African ancestor and she found that her six great grandfather was a slave brought to America in 1720, his son included his father's information on the application for a pension as a veteran of the American revolution. The application is in the national archives.

People who do the research do seem to be on the higher scale of intelligence as difficult research methods and searching is required... something your average dummy simply cannot do. And that alone makes me wonder if some people just aren't cut out to understand things for their own good. It is very hard to explain to people that even ancestors that were slaves was a vital part of who you are and had anything gone different (example: slavery not existing) you would simply not exist. You were never going to be born into another person... you can only be you with your DNA and circumstances of your family history!

    • @justonecornetto80
      @justonecornetto80 ปีที่แล้ว

I`m British but discovered I had relatives in the US and couldn`t work out why because I had already done my family tree which contained no evidence of any immigration to America. Turned out that an ancestor of mine deserted his family in England then later fought in the war of 1812 and was present at the burning of Washington. He subsequently deserted from the British army and raised another family in Maryland.
People roamed a lot more back in the day because it was much easier to do so than it is now. Employment, religious persecution, escaping criminal punishment and mere curiosity were the biggest drivers.

I used to enjoy watching "Who do you think you are" BBC version, and back when it started on NBC in 2010. But in recent years, with the Host Gates, it has turned into a Western world, white bashing tool by the left leaning media, episode after episode. The goal seems to be to demonize the western world and our white ancestors, introduced oh so subtly. The guests whose ancestors they uncover are tailor made to get this result. I have been doing genealogy work since 1986, and I've been on Ancestry since 2005, and most of what they do you can do for yourself on the web nowadays. This show is a disappointment because it could have been more balanced and objective, but it fails on both counts. It is of course, in keeping with the liberal narrative which seeks the same objective.

There is no liberal or conservative narrative in geneaology, only truth & facts. If you have a problem with the truth of history then it's your problem.

I am not a celebrity however I wish they could help me. My paternal grandmother died at the age of 27 during the pandemic of the 1920s. My father was 3 and put in the foster care system.
      I was named after her.

Spoken like one who wishes to hide the shame of their ancestors. What's wrong? Don't want your dirty laundry aired for the the world to see? It is ok for whites to slant historical narrative but not others? Sounds pretty hypocritical to me. I am glad that this show is seeking to represent a more balanced view of white westerners....whites have controlled the narrative to their benefit for hundreds of years. This is balance.

Your assessment is flawed. Gates doesn't host "Who Do You Think you Are?" which is a different show from this show, "Finding Your Roots", hosted by Gates. I just looked up BBC WDYTYA stats and in 2021 there was only one (out of 7) non-white guest. In 2020, all white (out of 4), 2019, one (out of 8) non-white person, 2018 1 (out of 8) non-white person, 2017 2 (out of 10), 2016 1 (out of 10), 2015 1 (out of 10). The American version, as well, includes one guest of color per season. Clearly the bias is in your perception.

Mr. McCauley have you thought Dr. Gates open doors for the brick walls of all races. Most researchers truly understand the sins of the past, but finding the truth of our roots can be demeanoring to some and blessing
to others in completing their lineages. I would like to know have open and shared your research outside your comfort zone and ethnicity. Hope you can see "Finding Your Roots as a useful tool and resourceful.

They are lucky that they can trace who their ancestors were, but unfortunately for me having African parents I can’t do the same.

Is that mostly an indictment on African culture, I wonder. Asians documented (and still do) their lineage for thousands of years. Europeans also have records back hundreds of years.

Blacks still don't know, because of slavery
We do know who we are
We don't know the language and we don't know where our ancestors came from. Or relatives they we might have that is still living in Africa
People like President Obama know because his father is from Ghana
Everyone can't afford deep research like Dr.Gates have done.
      So will will never know.
Because of slavery we have a lot Blacks who have White blood
America has plenty of Whites whose ancestors where slaves too.
It is Whites like Joe Mantegna who finds out that his great great grandmother was a Black slave
A lot of people who could pass for White did and they never told their family that their where mulatto, what they called people back then
      That they where Black
At least being African you know something.

@@mlynettepinky595 you have a point! but I’m talking about knowing your great grandparents. You guys can trace that. I can’t. I believe Obama father is from Kenya not Ghana no offense.

Genealogy is rough to people originating from a part of the world with little written history much less decent recordkeeping. Some places literally had no written language or/and literacy was nearly zero. Many of these places are still very bad and yes, most are still in Africa as well as Southeast Asia.
