I really have to say that video by video you get so much better at being in front of the camera. I’m sure all of this will pay off and one day this channel is going to be BIG
I hope so! Thank you so much for the support and love. It really means a lot.
@@songsbyspencer Keep it up, man - the production values are there, the content is there.
That bass line was total fire
Thank you! I love coming up with bass lines, one of the most underrated instruments.
That guitar is sweet. Yellow Ledbetter!
I appreciate that! And yes, Yellow Ledbetter has one of my favorite riffs ever. So beautiful, so Hendrix, so amazing!
"It is so worth activating the notifications for new uploads on this channel!" 1st time I said that hahahaha I'm glad I was able to catch this video among all the other youtube recomendations
13:58 is that a reference to The Beatles - She is leaving home?
It wasn't intentional but I can hear a similarity. Wouldn't be surprised if I channeled it subconsciously, seeing as the Beatles are probably my favorite band of all time.
Came for the recording knowledge, stayed for the excellent life advice.
Glad it was helpful!
You are making world-class music.
That is quite the compliment, thank you so much!!!
As a german follower of your channel I have to say: 6:43 pronounced totally right! 😉
Translated it means something like "play bells" - little bells for playing.
The song is good as always. Thumbs up.
I appreciate the kudos and kind words! Thank you so much
I need to find my headphones and listen to everything again
So much in 15 minutes. Great video. Great song and message. It seems you this is your destiny 🙂Hope you the best.
Thank you so much!
Spencer, I'm very glad to see your progress with every video. You guitar tones are absolutely stellar, by the way. Wish I haven't lost the passion to create music, like the one I see in you. I believe your channel's gonna shoot up soon, so keep it.
Will do and thank you so much for the support! It makes all the hard work worth it.
If you enjoyed this video please like and subscribe! It would mean the world to me and it will really help bring this channel to the next level!
This is solid gold production advice. Thanks for confirming what I've been working on for years 💯
Glad to help, and so glad to hear you enjoyed it!
You sir are brilliant, encouraging, and exceptionally educational to the process of creating music. You deserve all the success and thanks that I know is coming your way. Cheers man!
Wow, thank you!
Neat. Love the simple recording how-to as a back-door into checking out your original music. Good stuff!
@@PjPerez thanks!!
So fun watching and listening to you
Thank you for all the great advice and examples
Glad you enjoyed it!
Gold 👏🏽
Appreciate that!!
I missed this.
I started School this week.
Music Production Degree.
Big week I got an Arturia K88 awesome.
Youre awesome.
I was thinking about layering last night!
Keep growing and inspiring Spencer you are appreciated.
Best of luck to you. Also reference tracks can help teach you.
Congrats on the new toy and starting school! I'm so glad to hear you dig the channel and I want you to know that the support means so much me. Keep on recording and chasing the dream, you can do it!
Another great one! Your songs are really amazing!
Appreciate it!!
Thanks a lot for this video. I'm a big fan of layering, and I noticed that each producer has a different preference of instruments and panning. Always gaining new insights thank you :) Your song has a great rhythm section!
Let’s not forget the fact that this chord progression is enchanting
im taking all of this advice to heart, i hope one day i can layer as well as you!
Oh you can do it now! Just one layer at a time.
Great vid, great song
Make this Man Famous !!!!!!!
I don't want him to stop
Don't worry I won't stop! But I do hope to continue growing, and I really appreciate the kind words and support!
Oh yeah. Very Spector and VERY Born To Run with that decending run at the end there!
Gotta make the most of every melody!
Wow dude, it scares me to think how long it took to make this video! Amazing production and information. This channel will get massive if you keep this standard!
This one was definitely took awhile but it was worth it!
Another amazing video, and another great song. Wow.
Glad you like it!
Great video, great sound and visulization of all these methods and approaches, for once without focus on the daw and a million different techniques, thx, great work 👍👍👍
Thanks for watching and I'm glad you found it helpful!
This is your best video by far! Wow. From start to finish it was awesome, including todays message.
Thanks for what you do!!!
Ps that guitar solo was sick af
I appreciate that! I've been trying to be a bit more informative in my more recent videos, so reading this is satisfying!
Top class!
Thanks for watching!
🔥🔥🔥keep em coming
Will do!
Wonderful video as always, Spencer! I love adding layers to make things sound bigger! Even before I got into production, I loved the idea of all of the layers within a song to make ideas sound HUGE!
That was beautiful!
Love this!!!!
Love to hear this!
Even though I'm in the production business for a few good years and already know the majority of what you present in this video, I still enjoyed watching it because it is so well made. And of course In your other videos you have enlightened me with new stuff as well. Really awesome channel.
So glad to hear this!! The support means everything.
Very nice, and a visual nod to Spector's worshiper, Brian Wilson. Spector was bombastic, Wilson was majestic was some quote I read.
Fantastic video! This video is so perfect for someone like me who is having fun learning all this stuff. You made it so clear and relatable and provide lots of ideas to try out. Particularly its helpful to hear the finished piece at the end to see how it fits together. Thank you.
p.s. the song is great!
Glad it was helpful!
When are we getting a full spotify album release? This is gold. Thank you for sharing!!
I'm still hoping to release an album or double album later this year. I have some other plans that I'm working on to get my music onto a licensing platform. We shall see what happens!
Great video! You covered several elements that I can do to improve my own recordings and songwriting. Love the fun way you approach things.
Thanks for watching! I hope you find the techniques useful.
My favourite parts are always the basslines by Spencer.
I love me a good bass line! It's one of my favorite things to play- but I also love a great guitar riff! I can't decide which is more fun I love it all!
@@songsbyspencer as a passionate guitarist, I can say it's the basslines.
Super helpful!
So glad to hear this!
Super cool, fun, instructive and man you are so talented and an amazing teacher…with a sexy new guit indeed !
appreciate that!
It is fantastic that you can be didactic and entertaining at the same time.
That's always the goal! I want to inform but keep it fun and entertaining. So reading this means a lot.
Fantastic content, man! One suggestion, if I may - on that rhythm guitar track, the 6th string sometimes sounds just a little out of tune. I'm guessing it's your strong pick attack that's doing that. Apart from reigning in the pick attack, here are three ways how this issue is usually addressed by the guitar players for better sounding recordings:
1. Thinner pick (inconvenient if you're used to a specific pick; lighter attack).
2. Thicker strings (inconvenient if your fretting hand isn't used to torture. Possibly overall slightly duller sound).
3. De-tuning the 6th string by just a few % to compensate for that initial sharp spike. Pick attack needs to be consistent though.
Very good. It is always a pleasure to see your videos and your craft. Very good stuff!
Keep them coming... and I would love to "see" you try a Rockabilly song one of these days... Stay safe.
It'll happen sooner or later!
@@songsbyspencer Awesome!!
great video, great explanation, great song, great editing, great everything!
Much appreciated!
This is simply amazing! I am so happy I found this channel. I immediately subscribed!!!
Awesome! Thank you!
Most of your lyrics meet my soul and I've recorded music too. That's why your channel is interesting for me. It's time to release an album of your songs and play live gigs with guest musicians 😉
Thank you so much for listening and I'm so glad to hear you dig the music. One of these days I hope to put together a band again, unfortunately I just don't have the time right now. It's crazy how you go from being a kid with all the time in the world, to an adult with not enough time in the day.
@@songsbyspencer Yes, life is running very fast. You look like you're in your early thirties, I've passed middle fourties. We have to think (and act) extremely fast if we don't want to find ourselves old and with nothing in our hands... Feels like yesterday when I was as old as you look. Years today feel like weeks in my childhood.
Your didactic skills are outstanding.
Thank you so much- that $40,000 communications degree is finally paying off!
Again, nice video ! Love it. That's impressive to see a musician master all theses instruments ! It could take years to get to your level of playing.
It's taken quite a bit of practice, but as with everything you get better the more you do it. I'm by no means a master at any instrument, but I do take pride in being able to play relatively simple things very solid. So I appreciate the kudos!!
Thanks for all that you've done in this channel! It's been very inspiring to watch all your videos! I've learned a lot from you! I'm from Minas Gerais - Brasil! I wish you all the best things in this life!
My pleasure!
this is top quality content
I appreciate that! I'm trying my hardest.
@@songsbyspencer It really is! Thank you
Holy crap dude... This is just so mind-blowing and encouraging! I'm going to be taking these tips and really try to implement them into my music so they sound more professional. You have such a good way at teaching and being entertaining at the same time! I just discovered you and this is my second video I have watched and your content is top tier! Thank you for sharing your knowledge to help musicians like me! 💙
I really appreciate it! Keep up the great work. 🙂
@@songsbyspencer Thank you! ✨️
This was sick, mate!
Thanks, dude!!
Is this a cooking tutorial?! 🔥🔥🔥
I found the headphones! The bridge just rocks, it plays very well in contrast to the chorus.
Thank you so much! The bridge was inspired by the song "Belinda Says" by Alvvays. They're one of my favorite modern bands and the bridge in that song dies down quite a bit, and I thought a minimal approach would give a nice breather to the denseness of the chorus!
@@songsbyspencer this was a very good decision. Thank you for the video and for your openness to the audience. I will definitely listen to both the song and the group
Very good. You're awesome
Thanks, that means a lot to me!
If I ever form a band, I want this guy to be my producer.
I gotchu dude! Hollar at ya boy
Sweet... That's what this reminds me of... Matthew Sweet (but with a generally more positive message)
Yeah? I'll have to give it a listen to see!
Great video and content. I love
Layering, but often, my layers are too similar. Really impressive song and structure. Thanks.
Thank you so much for watching
Hello, thanks for the video! What are your general guidelines for panning? You kept some instruments panned center. I typically only keep the the main vocals (or guitar solo during the solo) center. It got me thinking if I should pan some instruments center. Also, why did you pan the clean guitar hard left but the distorted guitar not hard right?
why aren't you richer than Mr Beast! Real Talent!
Yo Spence, you're truly a great educator but i can't help myself seeing you in front of a band, singing your heart out. Anyways, super nice Vid, as always!
Maybe one day I'll get back up on that stage with a band again! I'd like to do it, it's just hard to find the time with everything I've got going on. If I do, it'll be announced on the channel for sure!
💚
That was pure quality! Got a sub from me. 🙏
Awesome! Thank you!
whipping out a pearljam lick like that 3:25
It's the ultimate Stratocaster Riff!
@@songsbyspencer No doubt!
I like the combination of nostalgia with reality check. Also, from the build up, I thought you were going to have this dense layering throughout and I'm glad it came and went with some sparse sections. I have a couple of questions: Did you not double-track the lead vocal? Wouldn't that build the sense of fullness? And I couldn't hear the strings at all in the midst of that. That could be just me. What do you think they're adding in that dense layering? Sincere questions in case this comes off as a critique - that's not my intention. You know way more about this than I do.
In this song, I did not double the main vocal- which is unusual. Normally for a recording like this I would actually triple track the lead vocal during the Chorus (one center, one left, one right), but when I recorded it for this song I didn't like the way it sounded as much, so I left it out. As with everything, there are rules, but sometimes they don't work out.
In regards to the strings being in there yet not being very audible, I find that's relatively common with this style of recording. It's not so much that you'll hear the strings clearly, it just adds another element to the "wall of sound" and helps blend it all together. I've found that organs can have the same effect when they're layered into a dense recording.
Thanks. That all makes a lot of sense.@@songsbyspencer
Sir, which software did you use here for layering, may I know..
I do all my recording in Logic Pro
Branch out from the Bare Naked Ladies sound my dude.
I hope you don’t take this the wrong way because I mean it as a huge compliment - you sound exactly like the 90s Christian rock bands I listened to as a teenager. You weren’t part of the band All Star United were you? Or Seven Day Jesus? I can’t quite place it but this song sounds so familiar.
I take no offense! I'm not familiar with those bands but I'll have to give em a listen!
You said at one point that you panned the guitar all the way to the left--I thought the consensus was to go like 50-70 percent to either side to prevent volume loss in mono?
It's true you lose volume in Mono when you pan 100% to the left and right, but I personally think it sounds better hard panned. To be fair though, I haven't really tried the 50-70 technique, so I'll have to give it a try and see if I like it. Making sure it sounds good in Mono seems somewhat silly to me, as virtually no-one listens to music in Mono these days. But I know professionals check their mixes in Mono, so there must be something to it that I don't understand. You've given me something to look into!
What OS version do you use now? My POD Farm has serious issues running in 12.4 Monterey. thanks
I'm running Ventura. I also have some issues with Pod Farm. It runs just fine, but it'll say that it's unstable, and it has caused logic to crash a few times. I don't know what to do about it, hopefully they release an update.
You pronounced Glockenspiel right - yay!
I made sure to Google it!
