      In the Air Force we have Patch Walls. The grippy (hook) side is on the patch and the soft (loop) side is used to make the wall. Your patches can be affixed in any order you like. I literally yelled at the screen "Adam you need a patch wall!" Lol... Also can't wait to see how your Razor Crest turns out. Love you and everything you do; you're a good man.

      I almost wonder if you could repurpose a cd/DVD book. On of the big, 4 disk to a page, binder style.
      Larger patches might require two pockets, I don't know if you can find one where the the pockets open towards each other?

      patch tapestry. medival style wall hanging tapestry that the patches can be attached to. use a hook and loop style attachment so they can be moved and reorganized as the collection grows. also can be rolled up and stored if/when needed. can also be double sided so it could 've hung from a rafter and seen from all sides.

    Patch Rolodex? They can be set on a shelf with rails and pull them out to scroll through them using an attached fabric medium or a rigid backing depend on the the chosen display aesthetic.

    • @daleo3348
      @daleo3348 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My brain went through a similar thought process and ended up wanting the display to be a mutoscope style affair.
      Maybe motorized, without an (opaque) enclosure, constantly running slowly in the background.
      Controlled like a split flap display, but with the patch occupying the full upper flap. Viewed while the flap is fully vertical.
      The sheer number of patches might pose a bit of an issue regarding the size of the machine.
      A one day build, Shirley. :-D

    If you can get your hands on one, a poster display rack, like you'd find in the old stores, could be a neat way to display the patches. You can get... ten, fifteen, maybe twenty per side, and it'd be double sided. Looked really neat.

    Patch storage: based on their size, you might actually be able to get away with just using a CD/DVD binder. From a quick glance at Amazon, it looks like they go up to 400, 500 capacity which I'd hope would be enough for you (with room for more in the future).

      Huh. I might have to hijack this idea. I have a button/decorative pin collection that's been languishing in a set of bags and boxes for literal years because I hadn't been able to figure out a way to organize and display them. I have so many that if I framed them and put them on our walls, there wouldn't be room for pictures or other artwork. (Yes. I'm a button hoarder. Autistic people have obsessive tendencies, what can I say? My collection of buttons is one of my obsessions.)

    My shop area is covered with patches from companies I do business with, or just have respect for. The doorjamb has a row of them, the workbench legs have rows of them, cupboard doors have rows of them. A book is a nice thing, but you have to go get the book and sit down to enjoy them. Something I had thought of to display the different medals and patches I've gotten over the years from different Larping groups was to adhere velcro to the back of them and make a kind of patch-tapestry. That way as I get more I can reorganize them without damaging the patches.

    • @vreiner
      @vreiner 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the same thought, with 2 suggestions: a) put the hook side on the patches so they stick to most anything; b) make a "loop" velcro sash so a selection of them can be worn over any costume somewhat like Worf on Star Trek displays his medals on his sash. C) A book of fabric (felt) sheets can be used to store and display the patches, allowing for infinite reorganization.

    I have a few ideas for display of patches -
    I have a collection of patches. I sew them onto a quality natural fibre blanket that I have out in winter time. It’s fun to go through them and the memories attached. I have always asked friends and family to bring me back a patch from wherever they are travelling. I usually ask for the most cheesy patch they can find, I have some really tacky ones that make me laugh. I’ve got a few flags and several emergency services patches too. But it’s the real tourist type of patch that I like, they look dated already and it’s like the design hasn’t changed in half a century.
    As Adam has so many, another idea could be to have them sewn to a large (large) piece of felt and hang on the wall using a thick wooden curtain rod.
    The trick is to leave room for new patches.
    I’m slowly finishing my blanket in a kind of spiral. I started around the edges of the blanket and then started inside that line and on and on until I reach the centre.
    The way law enforcement display their badge exchange collections is also pretty cool, but you need to have wall space.
    An antique or antique looking wooden notice board with a glass or Perspex hinged door to keep the dust out would be a quick way to display them.
    Inside you have pin board material covered in a *felt or fabric and then you use those thin archival pins to hold each patch in place - like a bug display but with colourful patches. This way you could always rearrange them and sort them into defined groups as you are given or get more.
    Personally, I love sitting on my couch in winter, sewing new patches onto my blanket and having it keep me warm at the same time.
    As Adam likes costumes, I could imagine him covering a boiler suit (or three) in all of those patches. He could even have a different suit for some of the themes in his patch collection - especially if he had enough of one particular theme to cover a complete suit.
    Well, that’s my 2 cents worth.
    Thanks again for sharing your videos with me, much appreciated. 🙂🐿
    * because we all know how much Adam likes to cover and/or line stuff in felt.

    Adam, you could always buy a “tactical” hook and loop patch wall. They make a large variety of different sizes. Then for the patches that do not have hook and loop on the back, you can buy some Velcro sheets to cut and sew/glue onto the back of them.

    An idea for displaying patches could be a scrap book or binder of velcro sheets. That way as patch collection expands, it would be easy to rearrange them.Also with the wide array of colors velcro sheets come in, it would be easy to make books or binders that fit a theme, such as a book for ghostbusters, for the rebellion, for the empire, or for miscellaneous. And being a book or binder it could be easily stored on a bookshelf.

    For the patch collection get some three ring binders with the largest rings available inside. There should be a way to make sleeves for the inside that will fit your patches. Like 3x5 photo album pocket size. That's what my mother in law and I did for her drink chip collection. She collects bar drink chips from any new bars she sees when we travel. She has bar chips from Germany from when her husband was stationed there in the army.

    • @seanmmccarthy
      @seanmmccarthy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excuse my ignorance, but what is a bar drink "chip"? Is it like a mat, or a coaster?

    • @timmyangeltlc4888
      @timmyangeltlc4888 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@seanmmccarthy a bar chip is a small plastic or wooden disc (think poker chip) that has a picture of a mixed drink or beer glass emblem on it. It will also have the words free glass of beer or free mixed drink on it. Some bars give them to patrons who are regular customers or someone can purchase a drink chip and give them to a friend. Some bars even just print free glass of beer or mixed drink sized cards off on a printer and hand those out instead of using plastic or wooden tokens. It all depends on what the owner of the bar wants to use if he/she wants to do some type of free drink/drink token for its customers. Not all drinking establishments off a free drink program.

As for the rest as you stated put them in a ring binder or binders.

    Adam, I saw a nice mobile map case one time years ago that would be PERFECT for displaying your patches. The map case was meant for an office, probably something like a city or county office with all sorts of maps for the local area. The map case was made from wood and each "page" could hold two large map pages (front and back), and there were about twenty "pages" in the thing. You would be able to mount some nice fabric in each page instead of maps and then mount the patches on the fabric. I think there was plexiglass covering each page, which would protect the patches quite well. I've looked for a picture of it on the net but have not been able to find one... It might be a good build project for you.

    Adam, the national fire academy does a couple of ways the display their patches. One is a display board that hangs on the wall (effective but requires a ton of real estate), the other is in a binder as you have suggested. They use a clear plastic sheet with pouches and place them inside. A picture album sheet is what I believe the use (not the older style with white backing, but the pouch). I hope to get the opportunity to meet you one day. I enjoy your channel, and Mythbusters. Thank you for inspiring others.

    I think a patch display would be a great bit of crafty one day build. To keep it expandable, a ring binder would probably be a good way to go. What I see for pages, though, are fabric samples of the material they would be found on, with patches tack sewn on, mounted to a thin stiff backing board and grommets for ring holes. Like a binder of thin cloth book covers.

    Patch display - 2 large diameter tubes (to cut down on flex of the patches) with a folding rack that spreads them apart, so you can have a flat sheet 2-4' wide and 4' tall of currently displayed ones, but can roll back and forth between "sheets".
    Sure, you could just do flat sheets like library newspaper racks, but the tubes would make it more visually interesting.

    I did something like what you want one time for a customer, I happened to be at a Home Depot when they were remodeling the carpet and tile area of the store, they were going to toss the carpet page rack, about two feet wide by thirty or so inches tall each page. I'm not sure what was displayed in it but there was a rack on the wall and the pages were hung with a rod that went into the rack. The pages were polycarb covers with a mounting board in the center of each page. Customer had traveled the world and had hundreds of stickers from all over the world I didn't get to see the final project all I did was repair some damage and paint it with automotive paint for long life. The best part is that it was free. I can see your patches mounted in there and hung on the wall like a large book. The cool part it would close against the wall and only stuck out about four inches then each page could fold out for viewing.

    I’m sure somebody has already said this but it’s common practice for service people and first responders to create a patch wall. Usually made of fabric with hook and loop. There are even small versions sold on Amazon.

    Boy Scout patch binders. Seriously. There are a ton of options on displaying military patches and Boy Scout patches. When I was in scouts like some twenty years ago (omg 🙄) I had hundreds. Patch trading was a HUGE past time! I’ve since passed most of them down to a younger sibling. But the ways we figured out how to display some of these were on blankets (lightly stitched usually with just one stitch at the top), in binders (my favorite), in larger binders made of cork haha… pinned or bagged… the options are vast! That was so exciting to see, a giant, unruly pile of awesome patches! So cool! That would be a hell of a one day build! Hahaha. Talk about knolling Heaven! Where to even start!?

    What about pinning the patches to some poster board and hanging the panels from the ceiling, like ceiling tiles?
    I am not sure how they would play with the lighting/overhead mechanical but you are always talking about the use of vertical space.

    If you have some wall space, some felt banners would be a great way to display the patches. As a matte background they put the emphasis on the patches, you can make them as large or as small as desired and they can fold up easily for travel or storage!

    for the patches - sewn on a blanket (or two) like the scouts and guides do ( well used to) A nice quality think woolen blanket. great for adventures, or keeping in the car. - or perhaps the office sofa. I've still got mine:)
    The ultimate recyclable option, and something that can be handed down to the kids.
    You could also do cushions...Q
    Just darn round the edges in a matching thread...

    For your patch collection, ever thought about a display rack used to sell posters? A huge book more or less mounted to a wall. You can display the patches on both sides of each "page".

    You can setup a “book” of plywood, similar to the way posters used to be displayed in stores. You can set it up to swing up out of way so you can leave it out for display and you can add to it easily.

    There is a Bar in Emmitsburg MD (Ott House), Home of the National Emergency Training Center that has patches from Fire/Rescue Companies from all over the world and they have many of the patches laminated under the Bar Surface. You could do something like that on the various work benches in the Cave.

    When I'm thinking about displaying patches, I always lean towards a camp blanket. I don't know if it's just a British scout & guiding thing or international, but when we leave a level of the scouts, we move all our old badges onto 1 blanket (often with a hole cut out the middle to make a poncho), which we then take to camp & wear it around the campfire. The badges mean the basket isn't always the comfiest thing, but it definitely provokes conversation when I go camping with friends or we're sitting around a firepit outside.

    I've never found many cologne scents that made me happy. I've tried hundreds of different colognes and nothing.
    A guy I worked with had one that I really like the smell of, and it's very much like you describe the space cologne as, that metallic welding smell, but throw in cedar and sea breeze. F&R Perpetua.
    Now I'll have to give yours a try.

    a great thing from scouting (in australia at least) is making a patch blanket (or poncho or cloak), take 1 wool blanket stitch them onto it, and you end up with a great way to display it and a good warm blanket

      Same in the states friend. 20+ something years ago the kids in my troop were really into it with world and national jamborees and patch trading was a HUGE part of our culture. But for trading you had to have them accessible and typically un touched by thread and needle. So binders, baggies that were pinned to cork boards set up like binders, in bins, just laid out from an old tackle box… but for this display I feel like a wall tapestry or like a flip through display, like year to years or con to con could be cool. Like someone had mentioned a poster display stand. That would be cool! Makes me want to go dig in storage and look through whatever I have left from back then! Unfortunately I’m sure that there are a lot of patches from “dead” or merged councils as the BSA has not been doing too well in the last decade or so. Anyway! I’ll be looking forward to seeing how Adam thinks it through! Or IF he ever gets the bandwidth to dig in to it! It’s a lot. Haha

    For patches, velcro makes a good attachment for it, letting you move it around. I don't know if you ever want to wear any of them, but the velcro would let you attach then in a book or to a wall, take them off and attach the to an outfit, and put them back.
    Were it me, I would print on cardstock what I remember about them (who it was from, when it was given, etc) along with a picture if available. Then attach the patch with velcro to that and keep them in a binder like the ones used for autographed photo collections with plastic pouches.

    • @Merennulli
      @Merennulli 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Added note - The patch should always have the hook side. That way the hooks can't snag on the patch stitches.

    Patch display - get an enormous bolt of stout cloth, maybe linen or canvas-like. Fifty or a hundred metres of 120cm wide might be about right. Make a frame that rolls it like a gigantic parchment scroll. Rig it in a frame. Build a hand-crank on one side so you can roll it forward or backward. On the other end put a very low-speed motor so that over the course of 24 hours it rolls forward one "display" height for some ultra-slow automatic updates.

    You always have guests over or need space to construct projects... why not make a huge table top with all of the patches you've gotten embedded in 3" thick clear resin. That way you can always see them, they'll be protected, and you'll have a functional work space? Or maybe two end tables or a coffee table with the patches embedded in clear resin. Oh... BTW, two of the patches you featured were from my wife. :) We were so happy to meet you and welcome you back to PCKC anytime!

There are so many you could make entire articles of clothing with them lol I dont know how viable it would be, but covering an old school mannequin in them and making an art piece that reflects how we are made up of what we mean to others would be cool
