Thank you. Nearly half my property is a part of a much larger environmental zone that has remained undeveloped. It's fairly wild down there and being in Oregon there are a lot of trees and blackberry thickets. Plus, I feed them.

Great view of many familiar birds seen in the western US. The Hutton's was the only one I wasn't aware of. The Towhee is now the Spotted towhee replacing the Rufous-sided towhee which used to include the Eastern towhee as well.

John Hamil It's lovely that You look after the Wildlife (as We all should). Please try to make sure this land never gets developed? There's far too many People & too many buildings but there's not enough of this & the rate We're going there won't be any of this left at all. Places like this are an oasis & sanctuary for Wildlife. Well done.

Dear John Hamil, what a beautiful beautiful place you have. Taking care of wild life is something I do as well. I get great joy from it. The first thing God told us to do is take care of the earth, and the things in it. No wonder we find peace and happiness in this simple pleasure, God bless you❤

I try and look for smooth, white bird baths, because
that makes it much easier to tell if the water is dirty.
Dark colors and mosaics are the worst for seeing dirt.
Birds are the only creatures that will see these designs
and I doubt they care about the design inside the BB.
The crevices around an interior design inside a bowl
are also the most likely place for mold to begin growing and
these crevices also make it much harder to clean the bowl
(If you don't care about dirty water it doesn't matter.)
I also keep a tightly wound handle strainer hung-up near the bird bath
and use that to clean very minute debris and birdcrap out of the birdbath
between changes of the water. (I buy 3 or 4 at a time at the dollar store)
I change the water at least once a day. Some species of birds like doves
and sparrows will crap in the water on a regular basis. I try and remove
it while it is still fresh and intact.
I went to a Lowes to buy a birdbath recently and I was very surprised
to see that most of them were designed very poorly in my opinion.
But I guess a lot of people buying their first birdbaths are novices
who are more impressed by aesthetics than the utility of the design(?)
I never use my clay/pottery bird baths in the winter. The constant pressure
on the sides from freezing ice at night and thawing during daylight
will cause these bird baths to disintegrate much sooner than they should.
I'm only aware of this because it happened to a neighbor of mine.
I use a heated, white, plastic bird birdbath in the winter but I don't fill it up
too high because the water on the lip will freeze. I thought the heater had
stopped working until realized I was filling it too high. I try an remember
to turn it off and empty it at night but sometimes I forget to do this.
But I live in the suburbs of Philadelphia and people in warmer climates
probably don't have to worry about this.

how do you tell the difference between hutton's vireo and ruby crowned kinglets

    • @JohnHamil
      @JohnHamil  4 ปีที่แล้ว

The vireo has a larger hooked beak often orange underneath and dark feet as well as lacking the black wing bar. The kinglets when not showing the bright crown have a needle like beak, a prominant black wing bar and orange feet. There's a side by side view at: www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Ruby-crowned_Kinglet/species-compare/65760531

The ex and I started-out with two Zebra Finches at one point - just two. Would NOT have been
a problem EXCEPT that they were male and female. So we married the two off, got them a nice
large bird cage (self-constructed). Bought a nest, i.e. a thing you can clasp onto the bird cage -
gives them a place to retire for the night. Watch Fallon, Kimmel etc. Put a little bird tv in there
with all the channels - i.e. the premium bird channel. High-def of course. Put in all of the
things your average Zebra Finch would want - bird seed - items for building a nest, string etc. - some
screws, a couple of tools - shades - some curtains. We wanted our home to feel like their home.
About six months in we lost track of how many birds were in there. A year later there were
almost 50 - therefore the cage hadda be expanded and expanded. What a racket 50 Zebra Finches
can make and with their especially-weird bird call(s).
Long story we broke up - but are still fighting over the birds. "Hopper" is technically MY bird, I
bought Hopper from a local pet shop - groomed him - found him his own mate - so yeah I went to
court in order to regain custody of Hopper.

You should see Zebra Finches when you put their morning fruit in - all diff colors - orange,
yellow (Lemons just to gauge their reaction to the bitterness), green (Avocado),
purple (Grapefruit), you average oranges - everything sliced up - we even put a little
festive toothpick in there - of course with some spinach. Zebra Finches like Spinach.

The scrub-jay uses to be Western scrub-jay, but there was a split a few years ago, so unless you live up near Mono Lake (which, being in Oregon, you don’t), they’re now California scrub-jays.
Also, Rufous-sided towhee was split quite awhile back, so being as you’re in the western part of the U.S., it’s a Spotted towhee (in the east it’s Eastern towhee, which doesn’t have the spotting seen in SPTO).

Sorry, John, I didn’t actually take note of the date...my bad. However, the towhee hasn’t changed in the 10 years I’ve been birding.

Yes, the names change over the years, as we learn more about the biology of these birds (the birds know, of course!). So Rufous-sided Towhee is now Spotted Towhee (in the West), and Scrub-Jay was split to Western Scrub-Jay and now to California Scrub-Jay (to distinguish Oregon birds from scrub-jays in Florida, the Rockies, and Santa Cruz Island). Note that Steller's Jay is spelled with two es, honoring 18th-century naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller, who sailed with Vitus Bering on the first European voyage to Alaska.

Ah your robins are so different than ours here in Europe!

American Robins are thrushes. I believe yours are flycatchers.

American Robins and European Robins are both thrushes, but the thrush family Turdidae is a large one, and the two species are sort of on opposite sides of the family.

Watching this video wax a delight especially with the captions naming each bird as it came to drink or bathe. That was ingenious. Bird numbers are declining so it’s harder to find some species to view. Thanks so much for filming this. Do you have other species that come not on this video? Seems like you would esp the hummingbirds.

I've been keeping a record of the birds coming through my yard since 2010. I have useful photo records of 74 species. There are quite a few more who have evaded me. Hopefully the webpage is self explanatory as each thumbnail is a link to that species' webpage. There is a "recent sightings" section at the bottom of the index page to track the itinerants comings and goings. www.jwhamil.com/Bird/index/index.html

I don’t have birds at my bird bath and feeders like I used to. I blame it on the feral cats roaming around. I only get sparrows, starlings, and robins. Every now and then the occasional goldfinch or house finch.

Over the years I've notice quite a few ups and downs that correspond to habitat changes (when my neighbors cleared their property of invasive vegetation) and now the weather seems to have altered habits. Cats do play a part but birds outnumber them.

Thanks John for the great video ! I live in the Willamette Valley and feed and video my backyard animals as well, this sure did help me identify some of these lil guys. Is that a sack of blood meal for the deer ? 🦌

You're welcome. Even though I'm on a creek most of what I see are upland-mixed forest birds. I've a more inclusive set of bird pages indexed here:
      www.jwhamil.com/Bird/index/index.html
I tried blood meal years ago but the ten deer visiting daily kept coming. We built a fence.
