  • In this 34 minute video I show you how to draw a very simple dog's tongue with coloured pencils. I'm using Faber Castell Polychromos, Caran D'Ache Luminance and Derwent Lightfast on Clairefontaine Pastelmat in Dark Grey. I take you through step by step in real time how to layer colours to create a realistic looking tongue.

    I just adore your videos! Your ability to instruct as you are actually working is such an incredible talent. Tongues add such a realistic look to a portrait when done as you instruct. Thank you so much!!!

    Glad you mentioned about leaving out strange lines from the reference. I've made the mistake of adding them for realism and having to go back and try to erase or cover them. I listen to my instinct now. Thanks for this great video.

      Emma Devost it’s definitely something to think about as some lines might be part of the dogs character but little ones I usually leave out

    Wonderful, I like that you are not using chemicals for blending . Do you ever use some kind of blending to speed the process ? Do you have a reason not to blend, but only to layer? Thank you so much for sharing your amazing work!

    • @BonnySnowdonAcademy
      @BonnySnowdonAcademy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Eva K i don’t use oms as it makes me ill. The blending comes with the layering so I don’t really need anything extra 😊

    So much to learn....thank you. Do you do backgrounds on say this dog or just use the colour of the Pastelmat as your background?

    • @BonnySnowdonAcademy
      @BonnySnowdonAcademy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tend to leave the colour of the pastelmat, however I am starting to do more backgrounds now I've found a viable alternative to pastel :)

      @@BonnySnowdonAcademy Hi Bonny great tutorials. You say you've found a viable alternative to pastel for your backgrounds What are you using now?

    Please, what type of white pencil do you use in the video?

    • @BonnySnowdonAcademy
      @BonnySnowdonAcademy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s likely to be a white pablo. However it’s the surface that allows white over dark - I’m using pastelmat 🥰

    Do you ever use solvents to blend the under layers to create a base??

    • @BonnySnowdonAcademy
      @BonnySnowdonAcademy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jay Dee no never. I have tried them but they made me ill 😞

    • @jaydee177
      @jaydee177 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Have you tried using Zest-It? It’s a natural solvent made from the terpenes derived from oranges and has none of the adverse effects of mineral spirits. It works exactly the same as mineral spirits for blending and it smells of oranges. In fact, I think it’s made in Britain.

    • @BonnySnowdonAcademy
      @BonnySnowdonAcademy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jay Dee yes this is the one that made me so ill sadly - I can’t bear the smell and it gave me headaches. But I’ve found with my techniques I don’t need it anyway 😊

    What size set of pencils would you suggest buying first? 40, 72 etc
    What brands would you suggest for a tighter budget
    Cheers

    Can you please tell us if you use a fixative or varnish when you have finished

    • @BonnySnowdonAcademy
      @BonnySnowdonAcademy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't because I've ruined a piece in the past before - I find fixative darkens and leaves spots
