This video just came at the right time. I just found about this game recently because of a recent tweet that appeared on my feed where the author of Megami Tensei (the novel that would spawn an entire franchise that continues to this day with Persona) talked about how Mr. Bones was the kind of world he wanted to express in the aforementioned novel.
This showed up right asi was searching for the original story behind Mr.Bones’ Wild ride And knew i had to watch after i saw a video in my search results that said “uploaded 13 minutes ago”
I really liked the comparison you made towards the end to what Zappa had to say. It's been interesting to see how the music industry both has & hasn't shifted since then. One thing I'm grateful for is the internet making it so easy for an indie artist to get their work out there so people can listen to & buy it. From there, they can choose if they want to take an offer from a label or keep at it on their own. The ability to have that choice on the table instead of there only being 1 real route is all I can really hope for. It's brought a lot of interesting & experimental music into my life & the lives of others. Shoutout to Louis Cole for staying independent amid his massive rise in attention and popularity over the past few years.
@@ThootenTootinTabootin He was one of the sharpest dudes, but what do you mean? He produced the song Bobby Brown that was a big hit, at least in europe/scandinavia everybody knew about him in the 80's. But I've always preferred the rest of his materials that didn't make it to the top charts. Albums like Roxy & Elsewhere, Waka/Jawaka, Hot Rats, Over-Nite Sensation. And The Grand Wazooo which is one of my top 5 albums of all time. He made alot of catchy music to alot of music-nerds, I guess you meant it was a shame that he did not make it "mainstream" but eeeeeeh, he was never about that.
I got a Saturn for Christmas at age 11 in '96, along with a copy of Mr. Bones. This game was stupid as hell, but it somehow awesome at the same time, and my little brother and I spent hours and hours trying to beat it. We eventually did. So many weird things mashed together into one game that somehow made sense. I really loved that platforming-in-space bit while Mr. Bones was spitting wisdom over some sparse ethereal blues licks as a kid. Oh, and the part where you're playing guitar, it pretty much doesn't matter which riffs you play. Just play them on time with the backing track. You can even interrupt one riff with another, as long it's on time. We had a lot of fun rocking out with that one!
Man, this is why I like your channel. You talk about games I'd never have heard of otherwise that are genuinely unique and creative, even if they miss the mark. The Frank Zappa bit is surprisingly prescient.
I played this game years ago on an old step-dad's Saturn, but I could never get past the first level at my age. The drums in the intro and the intro itself always entranced me, and I knew this game had to be something special if I could ever get further. Unfortunately my mother and him split a few years later and that was the last time I kinda owned a Saturn and saw any of the weird little gems it had to offer. It's hard to say how glad I am to see this game get some love from a channel with a sizable following, and that it lives up to my expectations and more!
I saw the title and decided to check this video out due to very, very vague memories of a "Mr. Bones" ad that showed up on TV once on fox kids when I was well, a kid. Hearing the "Mr. Bones" song in the bit with the little people confirmed that I did not imagine this!
That level you compared to "flappy bird" looks more like Tempest or Arkanoid. For contemporary games that seem to carry the spirit of Mr. Bones, there's a tiny bit in the various WarioWare games, but also UFO 50 and Last Call BBS (RIP Zachtronics).
Watching you play the platformer levels was painful, i know you said it took trial and error but man you did not have any patience in any of those clips, like, you can defeat the skeletons in the mausoleum level by just standing at the edge of either side and jump the skeletons charging at you one by one and thats it, still good video tho
A game that has the same vibe of Vangers, Limbo of the Lost, or Bip Bop II, is automatically a great game in my book. Also, holy hell, hearing Midtown Madness is a huge nostalgia punch in the face. Totally love that driving game as a kid, I hope GoG got a hold of that title. Also, damn, Frank Zappa's point hits kinda hard, especially today.
It's not the greatest game by gameplay standards even of the time BUT, for the first blues/rock themed game and the shear number of unique gameplay experiences makes this a hard pass but an awesome experience to watch someone playthrough. It's a 2-3/10 when you have to play through it without savestates but a damn fine 6-7/10 when you're watching someone suffer through the gameplay to get to the godlike cutscenes.
Well as long as the musician isn't the bad guy then hey finally some positive representation of blind people in games. My experience is they're all a-holes. You got the blind woman in Fatal Frame 1. The blind monk ghosts in Fatal Frame 2. The lickers in RE2, both versions, and oddly enough 5 for some reason. You got the wolverine dudes from both versions of RE4. Tenchu Fatal Shadows has a blind dude you're sent to eliminate, who.. Uhh paralyzes women to do.. Well.. Can't type it on a youtube comment because we're all babies who need everything censored.
Near-blind myself, seriously true. I look for blind characters that aren't transparently evil bastards, or inspirationally pathetic saints, and almost always come up short.

That generation really was the N64 and PS1 fighting to the death while the Saturn was smoking crack in the background
Let's not kid ourselves, that generation was a one-sided bloodbath. 8000 PS1 games vs 400 N64 games is ridiculous.
@ funnily enough even the Saturn had more games, over a thousand (although 70% never left Japan).
Such a fun time in the industry compared to today
@ and over 2 3rds of them are 3d tech demos 😂

Good way of putting it.

He wanted to express blues, and soul.
Mr. Bones' animation in the cutscenes is genuinely really impressive. He's so expressive, smooth, and lifelike!
I want off Mr. Bones' wild ride.
You need to solve the riddle
Don't forget you're in here forever.
It's a short ride.
No Mr. Bones meaning no Red Dead Redemption 2 is some crazy historical hindsight.
RDR3: Jack Marston and Mr. Bones trench fighting in WW1.

Also props to Mr. Bones' va, his voice is perfect for the role lmao

Quite the Christmas that must have been.
I watched the OneyPlays take on Mr. Bones and man, bless the voice actor for Mr. Bones. Just a weird but warm experience all around.
Same great LP

I miss experimentation so many games feel like they are just following a checklist every other studio gets
The developers of this game, Zono, Inc, made one of my favorite games on the original Xbox of all time. Alien VS Predator Extinction.
Sega Saturn's Spooky Scary Super Shreddin Skellington!
The riffs never ends!

I KNEW THIS GAME WAS REAL! oh my god ive been trying to remember this one for forever and all i kept coming up with was Medievil
Add a few quality of life features, and I could definitely see a re-release of this game being well received.
Mr Bones has Lips, and that bothers me.

26:07 That game would be Asteroids (1979).🫡
It couldn't be that easy could it? Unless it was just a trick to make us comment
No tricks, that's what the section is based on.
While I never actually finished this game, I'm lucky and grateful I still have my copy. I miss weird little games like this.
Game is jank but it's an audio journey
Gamefan used to glaze this game up and down back in the day, was one of my favorite used Blockbuster video pickups of the long long ago

Thank You . . . you've shown me Mr. Bones in another light that other youtubers could not. I'll see if I can make a bit room for it my collection.
This game proved that video games are art

Video games are games. They contain art. You're out of your 12 year old mind if you think bLaCk OpZ 14 has some kind of artistic vision behind it 😂

i cant believe any bit of this being real gameplay its so weird lmao
Mister Bones/metal hellsinger cross over WHEN!?
I can’t think of this game without thinking of Joel suffering through the ice level.
Is the vod good? I've been debating on using it as background material while i play path of achra or kf2.

Save Mr Bones for Henry Jones, because Henry don’t own a Sega Saturn.

My guess would be Atari's Black Widow.
The arcade game reminds me a lot of the game "Maelstrom" i played on my crappy windows 2000 PC back in the days
The arcade game is Galaga. I'm sure of it.
