In 2006, when I first got my driver’s license at 16, I drove my best friend and boyfriend about 4 hours away, after school, to go see Chiodos touring with The Devil Wears Prada and Alesana, using only printed out Mapquest directions. (This was before phones had internet or GPS lol)
We drove there and back in the dark and went to school the next morning without sleeping, in my new Chiodos t-shirt.
Looking back, I have no idea how we did that but it’s one of my favorite memories.
About half way there, we stopped at McDonald’s to get dinner, and the guy at the register shouted out loud, “Y’ALL GOIN’ TO THAT DEVIL WEARS PRADA SHIT??!!”
Chiodos will always be one of my favorite bands of all time.

I think they really went wrong when they kicked Craig out. When they brought Craig back it was too late to salvage the ship. By the time he returned in 2012, it was a way different scene and so many other bands emerged, ADTR, Asking Alexandria, SWS etc.. I think people really just moved on

Wilkes-Barre Wrestling sure La Dispute has definitely enjoyed some success but not to the level of any of the bands I mentioned, or even chiodos in their peak but more importantly they’ve never really been a part of the warped tour/alt press scene that we’re talking about. And I don’t think they’ve ever wanted to be, they’ve always kinda done their own thing

Super excited to see the Jason Hale love. He is from my hometown in South TX and actually was in my audio engineering class at community college around 2013. I talked to him a few times and he was super chill and humble about what Chiodos had done up until that point. He was telling me about how they used some cool recording techniques like bouncing vocals off of a book shelf during the recording of illuminaudio. Super under rated guitar player.

Craig Owens was a god back then to all us scene kids. There were so many bands during that time that were swapping lead singers or starting side bands thinking that they could continue the success other places, which hurt the main band.
If you haven’t already, Taking Back Sunday would be a great band to talk about and how they came back and were still selling out shows in 2017 & 2018. Saw them both years, amazing, highly suggest seeing them if they go back on tour.
Jonny Craig would also be an interesting one to dissect.

I was a roadie for Asking Alexandria on their ‘Reckless and Relentless’ tour, and Chiodos w/ Brandon Bolmer was on the tour as well...I remember there were a couple of shows where they literally got booed the entire time because everyone wanted to see Craig. I personally think Illuminadio is one of, if not their best album front to back..and Tanner, their drummer at the time; is seriously one of the best drummers I’ve ever seen live. I can say, first hand, that those guys are some of the coolest, most down to earth people on the planet. And since Asking weren’t much in to smoking weed, I found myself hanging on Chiodos’ and Emmures busses quite a bit. :p love these guys and your vids are awesome man. Keep up the good work!

It was back in 2011, and Chiodos was a band I had previously listened to in high school constantly, just a couple of years prior to that....so , it was so weird in the coolest fucking way, to find myself hanging on their tour bus with them..absolutely surreal. And to see how far Asking has came since then blows my mind. They were all incredibly nice, and we all felt like family by the end of it. One of the coolest experiences of my life, man. 🤙🏼

That was actually my first metal concert (The Pageant in STL, MO) 🤘😂 Lower Than Atlantis, Evergreen Terrace, Chiodos, Miss May I, Emmure, and Asking Alexandria. I remember being super bummed I missed Craig, but I personally loved Brandon. So I was basically fine with whoever I saw singing for them lol. I had VIP to that show and still have the picture of my group of friends with AA (who were thoroughly hammered 😜), including Ben basically hanging on me. I also still have the picture of me with Levi from Miss May I and the shirt he signed (he's so soft spoken and sweet compared to appearing like a fucking demon on stage 🤣). I was also in the very front (only thing between me and the stage was the security rail and security guy haha). Hell of a great show. Never been so covered in someone else's spit (LTA spit on the crowd basically their whole set 😷 and sweat (mostly the guitar player of Chiodos 🤦🏻‍♀️) tho... 👀😂🤘

This is an awesome video man!! Craig Owens truly is one of the best vocalists/showman I've ever seen in person with Chiodos and D.R.U.G.S. respectively so I definitely agree with you on that. I really wish both of these bands would do a reunion tour someday or at least record another album. Devil really seemed like D.R.U.G.S. 2.0 imo. I grew up with D.R.U.G.S. after seeing them for the first time in 2011 as co-support for Hollywood Undead and didn't know D.R.U.G.S. or Craig Owens and when they split I got hooked on Chiodos. I still digged both bands a lot. It's crazy to think that I've listened to Craig Owens music in general for close to 8 years now because of that one tour alone. Chiodos really seemed like one of those bands that people really knew or didn't know because of the name alone that I've noticed over the years. They still are so underrated to me to this day and I wish they could have continued.

Hi Julian, thanks for making this awesome video!
I grew up listening to Chiodos back when I was 14 years old (I'll be 30 this year lol)
Anyhoo, I thought I was the only one wondering what went wrong with Chiodos? This is one of those bands that had so much potential and they could've been viewed more on TH-cam or listened too. In my opinion, I think that it had to do how this band were known. Let me explain, keep in mind 2005 was the birth of TH-cam, so not a lot was going there. Chiodos was visible to me because I had high school friends who burned me a copy of their first album, plus I didn't really have a computer to watch their videos on AOL or Yahoo. Also, Social Media was barely on the rise between 2000's. Yes, we had Myspace, pff even Hot Topic but if you look now it's so easy to support a band from any social media. To become HUGE!!!! So many underground bands can easily get more contacts, support & fanbase on any social network (and I'm talking about Facebook & Instagram)
I do agree with you though, I believe the band letting go Craig Owens was a big mistake. Having to depart from a band is not so bad sometimes. When I found out Craig was working on other side projects I was a little bum but I didn't mind his solo career..until D.R.U.G.S!!
But going back to the time Chiodos reunited (with Craig Owens) I feel like there wasn't much hype. Like, ok "Who the hell is Chiodos again?" And I know they were probably aiming for the new/ younger audience. But I feel like it all fail. I mean if you look as of now on TH-cam, there last album "Devil" doesn't really have many views. This goes to the other early scene, post-hardcore, emo bands as well. Look at Senses Fail, AFI, Silverstein, Hawthorne Heights, Bayside, etc. They still make music but they don't get many views or are "into". A lot more audience are interested what's popular on there channel or post or whatever is on their feed 👉Twenty One Pilot, Neck Deep, Imagine Dragon....
Chiodos will always have a place in my heart. As you mentioned, I can too go on listening to their first album (all of the songs). It may be one of the best album! "All Nereids Beware & Lindsay quit lollygagging" are my favorite.

*NOTE: Sorry for the long as comment, I’ve just got a lot to say about Chiodos since they’re one of my favorite bands of that era and the album All’s Well That Ends Well is one of my favorite albums of all time. Seriously there’s not a single song on that album that isn’t great. Chiodos came into my life at a time when I really need them too. When those songs almost felt like they were written specifically for me and where I was at that time in my life, despite my being 13 years old in 2006. That album help me understand my emotions a little more and helped to understand that I’m wasnt the only one that felt the way I did, or thought the way I did. I’m a writer so I think of things in same way as Graig does in the those song. He also inspired my writing A LOT. Chiodos is an extremely underrated band, if you haven listened to them please do. You will not be disappointed.*
Chiodos was a great band and like you said, really had the potential to be a Legacy band for the Scene at that time. I found them on MySpace like all of us did due to the song “Baby, You Wouldn’t Last...” which along with “No Penguins in Alaska” became instant classics of the era. I still listen to The Heartless Control Everything (Which I personally believe might be a Kingdom Hearts reference due to the time in which it was release) and All’s Well That Ends Well.
Chiodos was a legitimately great band making great music where as a lot of bands from that era old got big because they had attractive guys, and sometimes girls, that dressed in the “Alternative” style, let be honest. There were plenty of bands like that. BOTDF, Brokencyde, Millionaires, Jeffrey Star, Death in December(if you’ve ever herd of them. They were decent band but just never quite could make it to the next level), BlessTheFall(ok band, but just weren’t quite there), and so on.
Chiodos on the other hand, much like MCR, were really making some of the best music to come from that scene. While MCR were able to break into the mainstream with “Helena” and “Ghost of You” appearing on MTV2, and the release of the Black Parade album. Chiodos never really did. They remind a sort of hidden gem to the wider public. Which is a shame because there’s bands be given credit for boosting the Scene that weren’t actually part of it but Chiodos never gets their credit expect from their fans or other that were involved in the genesis of that scene.
I think the reason for that, why they don’t get the recognition they deserve and where they tripped up, is because of Chiodos and Craig Owens splitting and going separate ways. I’m not exactly privy as to why this happened, but it came the worst time. They had just dropped the Bone Palace Ballet, with “The Undertaker’s Thirst...” and “Letters From Janelle”. I remember Bone Palace being such a highly anticipated album on MySpace. It’s all anyone I knew could talk about. We were just biting our nails to see what Chiodos was doing next. Then they dropped the music video for “Undertaker’s...” and shit blew up. Everyone was going crazy for it, and then of course they dropped the album and most everyone loved it. I was one of the people that though it was good but preferred All’s Well... to Bone Palace...
Then they split with Craig, and I remember just being devastated. I could imagine Chiodos without Craig’s voice. He WAS the voice of Chiodos, there’s no arguing that. When you think Chiodos you think Craig Owens belting out “SHE LOVES MEEEE, SHE LOVES ME NOOOOOOT...” There’s no replacing that. When Illuminotio drop with the new singer, it just wasn’t the same and I think a lot of other fans felt the same way. It wasn’t that we loved Craig Owens so we refused anyone else. It was because the sound was different they weren’t in a different direction. I’m pretty sure Craig wrote most of not all the lyrics for Chiodos, and their subject matter and metaphors for falling in love and falling out of love, feeling like you’re stranded on a beach with no one but yourself and a broken heart, letting go and moving on, all that and how Epic Chiodos sound was why I loved them.
No other band from that era sounded like them. It’s a little hard to explain their sound with words. Like yes they sounded like a Post-Hardcore screamo band but at the same time the intricacies of the music and each instrument woven into the composition with melodic guitar and piano, accented with an almost Classic style of music, all elevated and extenuated by Craig Owens voice. That’s how I’d describe it, a Classically influences Hardcore band. That’s the best way with words that I could describe it. Unfortunately, they made a bad career choice as a band by splitting with Craig. They had just arrived at they’re peak critically, commercially, and musically. We the fans who kinda fell away just felt it wasn’t the same anymore. It was almost like hearing a completely different band. It’s like when Alice In Chains got a new singer after Layne Staley died. It just wasn’t the same.
Replacing band members, especially as a band is reaching their peak and have already established their sound and style with 3 albums, is an extremely hard thing to do. They’ll never be able to find another person that can play and/or song, or write songs the same way as a previous member. Ever. It’s extremely difficult and very damaging to a band’s momentum musically and commercially, especially so when the member being replaced is the singer/songwriter of the band. That’s the voice of the band, both literally with sound, but also figuratively with subject matter, subtext, undertones, themes, and so on and that was Chiodos’ downfall.

(i'm aware this video is over a year old but i've been watching all your videos lately lol)
personally, even as a longtime fan of chiodos, i loved brandon as the singer. he had an amazing vocal color to add to the band and i was bummed when he was gone. maybe it would've been cool if they had two singers to bounce off each other lyrically and in singing techniques. In whatever Craig offered in terms of singing, brandon really helped with the clarity needed for their songs sometimes. craig was great, don't get me wrong, but i think brandon getting added even as a second vocalist would've given them a bit more grounding in terms of their vocal sound.
i saw both chiodos and craig owens live years ago (warped and a small venue respectively), and he's a great performer, so i think he could've brought brandon out better in terms of stage presence back then. these bands all have major issues in helping each other out from within the band. it's always like they're out to sabotage themselves instead of actually progressing. they should've just taken a hiatus after the craig thing instead of releasing something with someone new. fucking wild now that we look back at this.

So dude, I've watched like 20 of your videos now from the ciwwaf rise and fall to the bryannstars rise and fall, to the 3 part never shout never videos and I've been missing the 2007 scene, I was literally raised on blink and grew into the neon scene and I've missed it so much, but watching these videos about all these old bands and even discovering new old bands I can feel on has been sick as hell. Keep doing this. You have earned a sub which I dont do often.

    @Replicaate 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Incoming comment essay so I apologize in advance!
First thing, you're about the only channel that talks about that specific time and place in the mid-late 00s - that far too brief period in my life when hopping on the city bus instead of the school bus after class and trucking down to the mall newsstand to get the new issue of AP was the big event of the month. Hearing you analyze and explore the careers of bands like Chiodos and TAI... and guys like Ryan Ross in such a well-researched and informed way instead of dismissing "emo kid shit" is SO refreshing. And I wanna thank you for it. This was a big part of a lot of people's lives and its good seeing it get a serious treatment for once.
Second thing, I'd be interested what you have to say about another band I feel were lost to that time/scene in posthardcore/metalcore - Atreyu.
I was there when they were at their peak - the 'Lead Sails Paper Anchor' and 'Congregation Of The Damned' albums were big successes, everyone from Chad-tastic dudebros to the skinniest emo kids knew their songs, they were on the Taste Of Chaos 2008 tour with Underoath and Avenged Sevenfold, and seemed so poised to be the next HUGE thing when they went on hiatus seemingly out of the blue. By the time they had a reunion and comback a couple years ago, they seemed outdated and younger bands who were inspired by them (like Ice Nine Kills) were beating them at their own sound, or fellow bands from the scene days had totally eclipsed them in fame (mostly Avenged Sevenfold). afaik they're still going, but nowhere near as relevant or famous as they once were.

Edit: Isles & Glaciers were AWESOME - too bad all the members had drug problems at the time (some still do) and wasn't Craig in Sounds Of Animals Fighting with the dudes from Rx Bandits and Anthony Green? - Glad someone made this video! They were one of my favorite bands of all time! I even LOVED Illuminaudio with Brandon (too bad they distorted a lot of his screams, apparently, by the time he joined Chiodos, he could no longer scream like he did with YR) so they used the distortion you hear. I have heard Brandon do the songs live and he uses the distortion as well and WAY less on that album. Unfortunately i was NOT a fan of Devil :-( I just could NOT find a song I liked... - Really wish they would've done more things with Thomas Erak (Fall Of Troy) when he joined on Guitar...would've loved to hear him do some vocals parts, etc....

As someone who played guitar in a post hardcore band between 2005-2010 I can tell you “alls well” was very influential amongst a lot of guitarists. But it wasn’t because the guitar parts were intricate. In fact it’s the opposite, pretty much every song revolves around the same chord being used up and down the heck, octaves. Having the backup guitarist doing the same chord but as a third. And then power chords or open D for the chorus or heavier parts. And the Jason Hales guitar tone was very controversial amongst guitarists. Some people thought it sounded really cheap, like a boss distortion pedal with “tone” maxed out and “bass” at 2. But that’s what makes the sound so unique and a lot of guitarists copied it sound.
There’s some really creative licks sprinkled in like the lick in the chorus for “All Nereids beware” or the intro of “words best friends”.
But it was obvious that Jason put a LOT more effort into the Bone palace album. Using a lot of neo classical scales and modes. I think this was sort of a reaction to people calling his writing “basic” in “alls well”. But it went a little too far in my opinion and lost a lot of what made Chiodos sound like Chiodos. Was very operatic and bombastic. When Chiodos original sound was like listening to your friends band, didn’t take itself too seriously but was endlessly catchy.
Jason Hale is in the warped tour guitarist hall of fame in my opinion. Every guitarist knew his name and how to play 3-4 of his songs.

I don't mean to come off as a cynic but I think the only real "wrong" thing Chiodos did was not get into any beef with Craig Owens once he left. It may just be that I'm coming off your Jonny Craig documentary and I'm remembering Jon Mess talking about how Jonny's controversies are marketable to the point where he said "if somebody wants to beat up Jonny after a show I'll be behind a bush with a camcorder in my hand ready to sell the footage" but part of me thinks the respectful nature of not getting into ANY reason for why they kicked Craig out is part of what hampered their longevity.
I'm envisioning an alternate timeline where they got into drama and flung shit and it'd be a back and forth between them that keeps buzz for them both Chiodos and Craig alive. I'm imagining they'd have this narrative of the band wanting to do more dark and progressive music and Craig would be painted as the "sellout" who got more interested in the fame of it all. They could paint Illuminaudio as like "the album they REALLY wanted to put out" and there'd be proper stakes behind its quality as a record instead of "man who's the guy they got to replace Craig?" which was let's be real most of the discourse surrounding the album at the time. Think about it though! There's potential for a Squash the Beef style tour with D.R.U.G.S and Chiodos headlining, there's the drama that a proper beef has that ultimately serves to market for both bands, and then eventually when Devil comes out there'd be a resolution of sorts of "well it looks like they don't hate each other after all! :) " It ultimately wouldn't change the fact that Devil is kind of mediocre buuut that's a rant for another time!

You compared the replacement of Craig with when Cove took over for Anthony in Chiodos. The main difference is, Saosin by far had their biggest hits with Cove. Their self titled album was huge and a lot of people found them on that album and didn’t even realize Cove was a replacement.
I think Coves Saosin was a force to be reckoned with song writing wise. Very few have had the vocal melody writing chops he had

    • @soysaucehairdye7869
      @soysaucehairdye7869 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah the only real comparison between the two bands is they both replaced their High Tenor singer with a mid-tenor singer. The fact is Saosin only had essentially 8 or 9 songs with Anthony Green singing the lead vocals by the time Cove joined the band, while Chiodos had two great albums with a very charismatic and skilled frontman when he was replaced.

@@gelatinpowder1137 - I have as much respect for him as I do Anthony Green. I think both were far more skilled than the instrumentalists in Saosin. Clicked right away. I'm still grieving the loss. Great vid, ty 👏
Unpopular opinion: Illuminaudio is one of my favorite albums of all time; I've listened to it straight through at least 80 times, probably more than I have All's Well and BPB:GC. Was I missing Craig? Absofuckinglutely. But not at all b/c Brandon was lacking something. Brandon's *recorded* voice had a quality to it that brought minor chords in that depth of soul grabbing way and I fell hard for what he was bringing to the table. I listen to his solo shit as Maskarade all the time. With that, the two things I regret most in life are not seeing Fear Before the March of Flames live, (I was strung out at the time), and not seeing Chiodos live with Brandon (that one I can't blame myself for tho, pretty sure they only played 3 shows cuz Brandon's voice).
Still, I was thrilled about Craig's return and Thomas Erak, omg - what a fucking cherry on top! So, I was thrilled w/ Devil by using a lens of gratitude for anything called Chiodos/open-mindedness to change, but completely agree with it featuring forced lyrics, lack of cohesion, song structure change for worse, lack of symphonic elements, etc. It totally felt like a hybrid album of Chiodos and D.R.U.G.S. w/ a sprinkle of the Fall of Troy.
Can you please do a vid like this on Fear Before? 🙏
P.s. that seven years jump cut 🤣

Last I knew, Jason Hale moved back to Texas and got married...but that was over 10 years ago and I never kept in touch. I would stop by his place and say hi to him when he wasn't on tour with Chiodos, back in 2007-2009. I first saw the "Chiodos Bros" in late 2001- early 2002 at the Flint Local 432 and subsequently went, every time they were in town, partly because they had this insane energy (that a lot of local bands from the mid michigan area had) and because a girl I liked, liked them.
If we're talking about the most distinctive elements of early Chiodos, "all's well..." era one can't overlook Bradley C Bell's contributions to the band's overall sound. If you go back and listen to the Chiodos Bros stuff or even All's well... You'll hear it. Nearly every song has a nice piano part or quirky, sporadic piano part. Jason Hale added that extra bit that took them from a posthardcore band to a metal infused post hardcore scene band - I really liked his playing, especially on Bone Palace Ballet.
The unreleased King 810 album with Jason Hale, Anachronism, is like one of my favorite albums and Hale's addition to that band was something that could have taken them towards a different trajectory - had he stayed with them. I saw them play, in 2008, at a house show and it was one of the few times I saw them with Hale (as he was frequently on tour for Bone Palace Ballet , during that same period) and subsequently, it was one the few times they played Dreamer (maybe it was "III", I don't remember) and Untitled, 2 songs that employed delay effects throughout the song, to create an atmosphere. Jason's power adapter broke for his delay pedal but I came through with 1 because that's how I roll. Was a powerful show, paint was spilled on the floor...it was everywhere.
Ahh memories....I've got a lot and a vivid memory. No time machine to go back and relive it all, though, but the music remains.

Jason was great, however Bradley and Craig literally wrote the majority of Alls well that ends well. IMO Chiodos, was always THE Chiodos bros of Brad and Craig. I miss the old hall shows in Mi

I missed Chiodos at the 2013 Warped Tour. I just totally spaced it and didn't realize they were playing at 2 until around 4. They were one of the main bands I wanted to see that year. I'll never get over that...
