I use a micrometer to gauge the depth of anything I cut. Doing so ensures that you prectect your mat and also doesnot cut through any layers that I do not wish to be cut, as in stickers or vinyl. Setting any felt or fabric blade depth can be found out via the micrometer.Love the varied experiment you did. Was a fun watch, thanks for sharing your experiment. :)

I loved your video and I tried cutting the Kunin/Foss felt from Joann's on my Pazzles Vue machine and it cut beautifully with the Wonder Under. I cut it once and made sure my felt is nice and flat before I cut it again and it cut beautifully. This felt that I cut is a polyester felt I believe and fairly inexpensive. Thanks for sharing your video!

Have you tried a temporary spray adhesive that is used for quilting and machine embroidery? Machine embroidery supplies include many kinds of backings to stabilize it while thousands of stitches are punched through. A lot are tear away or dissolve with a spritz of water. It isn't as cheap as freezer paper, but it might be more successful.

It can be expensive to buy some of the stabilizers - Joann's coupons helps and some can be bought by the yard in some stores. I keep a box to use when spraying pieces. The newer types are not supposed to be bad for you or your machines but I still like to make as little contact as I can. I need to check out how they would work. The spray is usually temporary - looses its stick after so many hours so you would not have a problem with being sticky. I have several types of backing and a couple of sprays for my embroidery/sewing machine. One reason why I wanted the Silhouette was to make fabric shapes to applique on but have yet to try it.I got sick a year ago and some things take time to recover from. Normally, you put fabric on the hoop, stitch around it and then cut it with special scissors. Putting down an already trimmed piece would be so much more fun - and a lot quicker. I just don't want it to be any more bulky and permanent stabilizer and iron-on glue backings do make it more stiff.

+Kathleen Roush I, too, am an embroiderer. I bought the Cameo for that reason, as well. I love applique, but would really like to just pop the cut out onto the area it belongs. I'll try to upload after I get good results. I want to cut vinyl also.

I was watching a video recently that shows something temporary that stiffened the fabric to a paper-like stiffness. Of course, I can't remember what it was.... I have to figure it out.

Wow! Sweet experiment. Do you have a link to where we can get the good felt? The pink stuff...

Well on the thicker felt you would use a different cut setting for thickness and possibly the deep cut blade. You can't use the same setting for different materials

I think this was before they made the deep cut blade, so 10 was the highest I could go. It definitely works better now that I have a deep cut blade.

I just ordered my Cameo, and am researching techniques. I hate scissor-cutting felt, thank you for the tips! Did you use your regular blade on this or do they have a special fabric blade?

Do you think regular iron on interfacing would work like the lightweight stuff used for shirt placards? I'm considering getting one to do felt art dolls and this would save me a LOT of time if it works.

New to this. Very informative thanks for sharing. Just a newbie thought would it be helpful to put a light weight topping product like newsprint on top? I'm a seamstress and we often use tissue paper on top of some fabrics to aid in the cutting process?

Hello Jessica, I do a lot of cards and instead of using double side tape I like using fun foam. Can I cut fun foam with the Silhouette? Thank you for all your testing.

hi, i wonder if minky or other thin n stretchy fabric can go through the silhouette cameo?
    thanks

I don't do anything w/ felt, but I sew and my goal is to cut out appliques to first iron on and then sew on for my grandchildren. I used to sew for my daughter who is now 30. I also make wooden signs with clever sayings on them so I am using the Cameo to make stencils for my signs and for furniture that I chalk-paint. Your videos are VERY helpful and appreciated.
