    I always learn something from you Seth (and I'm always a little disappointed when you don't "Nerd Out" and go down that rabbit hole). Love the Quote: "Sophie's Choice psychotic breakdown". Thanks for not only teaching me something, but making it fun to listen to (a.k.a. "Hate me down (if you want) in the comments, it will help my algorithm". I find myself hanging on your every word. Thank you, brother.

    Great to hear the perspective from a working photog. I wish the camera rental market here in Australia is more competitive and not just the rent-to-own outfits; because for a part-timer/hobbyist, I would really appreciate the opportunity to rent this system on an as-needed basis, so that the math makes more sense for people like me who are just starting out. Great balance of pros and cons!

    Great stuff. I’d love to see a video from you detailing your monochrome choice and thought process around yellow filter and other choices you’re making for monochrome images. Also curious with Fuji If you have favourite settings for shadow/highlights contrast settings and what is your end goal, punchy and contrasty, fitting as much dynamic range, etc? Appreciate all the content you put out, super valuable.

      Well, yes and no. Seth is of course right from a business perspective. But there is a great second hand market for these lenses (only the GF 63mm and 120mm Macro seem less popular) and they hold their value quite well if you're careful with them. So while the purchase price may be high, the price of ownership is fairly OK if you would buy and sell on the second hand market from a trustworthy supplier. If I would shoot mainly portraits, I would be eying for the 80mm (great field of view, little less good than 110mm) and 250mm (on par with the 110mm) too, next to the 110mm. Thanks for the nice video! [tip: the 45 - 100mm you ordered is a surprisingly good "macro"-ish lens too with the MCEX-18G extension tube, if you ever need detailed close-up shots of items]

    Hi Seth just watched your GFX100s video, and yes the camera is visceral it makes me get up and shoot. Can't explain it nobody gets it. I have 6 of their lens and the 80 1.7 is a bit quirky but what a killer. Just did a shoot on it with the my model holding her new Hassy X2D and lens. My god the files are insane. 583mb files in PS. By the way I used this GFX100s in Western Mongolia at 11,000 ft and minus 25c no issues it kept on ticking battery life was excellent. My Z9 of course was insanity ! My Leica SL2 froze up and died haha. Great video my wife switched to Hassy X2D but no way I'm going to change. I love my Fujifilm GFX100s

    I LOVED this video, it was very helpful.
    I have the D850 and various other Fuji's and others, yes I have GAS. Always wanting the next best thing I'm thinking about a used GFX100s and the kit lens for the price of a new GFX 50sII. What are your thoughts companied to my D850? Also, you mentioned RAF with the film simulations not baked in?

    • @LastXwitness
      @LastXwitness  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It holds the sim to the raw file instead of other cameras that raw is just always raw and the jpeg gets your color profile like say black and white. Then you get a grayscale raw file and if you want to swap it to velvia you can after in capture one. As opposed to trying to grade a raw to match whatever color profile you liked on the jpeg

    As a commercial shooter I've always just rented a Phase One system when I needed medium format. I also teach at one of the larger photography programs in Canada, and am lucky to have access to a number of Phase One IQ4 150mp systems there. I've never considered purchasing a medium format system because the prices are just stupid - rent them when you need then. Until the GFX 100s came out - this is an eye-opener. Fuji was good enough to lend me a GFX 100s for a few days, and I immediately decided to buy it after testing it out. The quality is exceptional and the value (while not cheap) is unbelievably good when compared to Hasselblad and Phase One.
    One other negative about the camera (a small detail in my opinion) is it's Pixel Shift capabilities are pretty limited. The GFX 100s is capable of taking a 400mp image using Pixel Shift, but the camera can only do so with the electronic shutter - which effectively means you can't use strobe. I experimented with Pixel Shift using very bright duration lighting, but I experienced errors about 80% of the time - it's looking like that feature still needs some development. The only real commercial use I can see for the Pixel Shift is very high-end art reproduction, and the Hasselblad HD6 is pretty much untouchable in that arena - luckily, I don't do that kind of work!
    Otherwise, the camera is just brilliant. Thank you - really good review by the way!

    • @LastXwitness
      @LastXwitness  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea $50k vs $6k I’ll take the hit on pixel shift I’ll never use… and really at that point it becomes a scanner for reference pieces. I’d rather have the nimble ability and accessibility of the camera than something I gotta strap down for files I won’t use lol but yea if you’re doing that work you’re probably renting or it’s owned by the museum you work for

    Thx for the constructive review of the 100s. I always wanted to try a medium format camera but it priced too high until 100s. Purchased a couple of months ago and I definitely had to change how I shoot when using this camera. Broke the bank and got 45-100/f4 and 110/f2. Now I’m thinking getting 100-200 zoom. Downside is Fujifilm GF lenses focal length. Too many lenses focal length overlaps.

    I love how much you love this camera. I love the work you've produced with it and can't wait to see more. I'm glad you're so nit-picky with your black and white photos because they are amazing and the tonal range on this camera allows you to capture that range. The SDs would annoy me for something this heavy as well, but you're not shooting 20 fps with it. You buy it, fully knowing this will slow down your workflow. And you shoot it with intent. Great video Seth.

    Great insight on owning this camera and I agree wholeheartedly. I know it’s an old video for you but I was wondering if you might share how you have it set for shooting strobe in studio. It seems like a roll of dice for me as to whether or not I’ll be able to see my scene in order to compose and focus or not. And this seems irrespective of the ambient light level. It can be plenty of light but if this thing wants me to see a practically black screen, that’s what I’m getting that shoot. Makes a total fool out of me and is embarrassing at times as I’m trying to figure out what’s going on. First mirrorless, after decades of Nikon SLRs and DSLRs. Half a year so far and still can’t figure this thing out. Thanks for any help.

    Awsome review, I just picked up the camera used in linke new condition only 1,300 actuation with like new 80mm and 45-100mm lens like new. I was not really looking to get into the system but felt I could not pass up on this deal, that even through in the Fuji dual charger and extra battery. I’m thinking of adding the following lenses 50mm, 100-200mm and definitely need wide angle thinking 20-35mm

  • @johndaubney7311

    Hey Seth ….yea I just got mine on Friday. Man I’ve never loved a piece of gear more than this ! Even the dam shutter is like butter. I could have taken the cash and got the z7 ii and some glass which I debated and finally pulled the trigger. I just needed to end chasing more megapixels (it’s how I justified the purchase ). I have the 50R and love the image quality hated the form factor. I expected to really appreciate the ibis and 100 megapixels but I’m totally blown away. I hear ya on the lens dilemma. I shoot both the z7 and Z6 so now I’m into another system. Been adapting the Nikon 58mm f1.4 G and the 85 f1.4 G with the Steelsring autofocus adapter. They were both great on the 50R but they won’t cut it long term. I know you have the 45 and 110 ….I’m thinking the new 80mm and the 45. What do you think of the 45 ? And have you tried the 80 ? Tried to do the lens sharing with the Nikons but it ain’t cutting it. Fine on the 50R but they are slower and I can see they really can’t resolve 100 megapixels

    • @Edwin--
      @Edwin-- 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahaha, I agree, that shutter is a work of art ;-) Could be my personal soundtrack! Which lens to get is a very personal choice, because it depends on what and how you shoot. Personally, I think the LM-lenses, which have the linear motors are smoother, quieter and more confident in their focusing. The 110mm f2 is in my opinion the best lens of the entire system, the output is gorgeous and it has the linear motors. The 80mm f1.7 is definitely no slouch either, the image quality is slightly less than the 110mm and they have put in a different focus motor which is noisier, somewhat slower, and a little less confident. I do really like the field of view though for half body shots. The 45mm is optically great, is nice and light, but is a tad-bit clinical straight out of camera. The 50mm focuses a little faster, but is optically less good than the 45mm for sure. Enjoy the honeymoon phase! ;-)

    Hi Seth, I've watched your video again and I'd like to ask a question that I did before, but maybe I didn't phrase it correct;y when I first asked.
    In the same way that you show the differences between different light modifiers, such as the gradation from light to shadow, would you consider doing a video showing the difference between images from a large sensor, such as medium format, to a small senor, as an extreme, micro four thirds? Not a camera vs camera comparison, but a size comparison - as an extreme example medium format vs micro four thirds.
    I think intuitively that there are differences, such as noise at higher ISO values, that are understood. But, in the real world, Instagram, A4 prints, 30 x 40 images and 15' laptop screens, what does the difference in sensor size actually return?
    I hope that I make more sense this time 🙂

      Which means the 100S is under $3k used for the first time. Such a steal of a deal.

    I own the GFX100s as well and the files coming out of it are astounding. Never thought I could afford a medium format 16bit camera that's brand new and runs the latest sensor tech. Crazy! ... What I hate? Well, that it isn't a GFX100R, the rangefinder style body. I really enjoy having labeled dials instead of custom keys and DSLR style front and back dial. Seriously, why does a Playstation ... sorry, Sony camera have a labeled exp. comp. dial but my medium format "we-got-back-in-the-game-with-vintage-controls"-Fujifilm doesn't?!?!? WHAT THE .... anyway.
    Btw.: If you are ok with a lens that's essentially just bad in almost every way, the TTArtisan 90mm f/1.25 (no, that's not a typo) is bonkers. I bet you can already imagine what it does and it's exactly that. It does nothing else well ... but man, that look. 😉

    great video in any respect … I agree entirely to your comments ... "but" you forget one thing to mention 😊 : for a medium-format-size camera the shutter is soooooo silent compared to my X-T3 // X-Pro2 and nearly without any significant vibration. Realy amazing for such a camera

    I always "love" all those guys sayin' things like : "... 100 Megapixels? Aaa-bah, you don't need that." I never listen to these people and I'll tell you why : in 5 years, this 100 MPIX will become the common standard. No one will even think picking something which is less than that. I don't know what you guys, but me personally, I like to be in front of the crowd. I simply want to stand there already - now, not waiting for anyone, especially not waiting for the boo-ing crowd which will arrive to this spot in 5 years. Because in 5 years I will be far away from this spot, far away in front again.

      That’s a little misguided. Witu why rising spec soon comes diminishing returns. There’s a reason 100mp suits larger sensors like GFX but would be rough for full frame. Cramming pixels on a smaller sensor means making them smaller. This leads to 1. Diffraction where you will see loss in detail negating that resolution due to how the light has to spread across the smaller array.. then you’re stuck with the cost, power and bandwidth of processing all the data leading to slower functionality like FPS and so on for no real reason. And 2. Noise in image thus causing negation of the boosted resolution detail. What you might want to say here instead is medium format might become more standardized to where full frame is but that will take way longer than 5 years if at all

      The Hasselblad x1d etc., use the exact same size sensor, and nobody says they are not really medium format. How come? Snobbery or ignorance.

      Yea ok 👌 is right. Maybe you havnt seen the years of videos from brands handing me one of kind prototypes to work with. If it’s “abuse” then they wouldn’t trust me with it. And if it’s “abuse” then the equipment is hardly an investment when you feel you need to be as delicate as you clearly think you need to be ..with equipment that’s weather sealed .. to be hand held, slung around your neck and lugged around the world. I have over 2 decades shooting for a living I know how to handle gear.
