that game was the best i ever seen in 35 years,not only the goals,every action was a suspence on both side,a lot of tricks from both sides,and well it was a minor cup but the 2 squad really wanted to beat the others.too bad a match like this cant be even matched today ,even because ...watch the nams of the players on both sides..legends everywhere XD

Cesare Maldini's Italy scored 3 to 3 with Brazil and then to the World Cup in 1998, scored 0 to 0 with France losing only on penalties. So Italy equalized with the champions and vice champions of the world of 1998. Nevertheless Cesare Maldini was exonerated. What an injustice! RIP Cesare.
Because his tactics were confounding and old school....i.e. negative football. The France game wasn't close btw, gli Azzurri sat back pretty much the entirety of the 98 match and only showed any type of brilliance when Roby Baggio was on the pitch (who incidentally was a late sub if I recall correctly)....

I strongly disagree. We had great defenders and forwards back then, but we were not a great side: we didn't have any world class central midfielders - Albertini, Dino Baggio, Di Matteo, Di Biagio were all good, but not great, nowhere near the likes of Pirlo and De Rossi. As for the team, we got by because of those defenders and forwards, but we rarely bossed games. We had to go through the play-offs to reach France 1998 and in this tournament we finished bottom of the group.
@@dangiambrone7350 I concur. The 2002 squaddra imho was the greatest on paper and we were fvcked by fifa and that little pear shaped pissant from ecuador. That WC still pisses me off. No love for byron moreno.

That team finished the World Cup in quarter finals unbeaten, they lost to France at the penalty kicks and by bad luck in the 120 minutes game as we had more chances to score than them. And we won our group: 2-2 with Chile, 3-0 with Camerun, 2-1 to Austria, then we defeated Norway (that had just defeated Brasil) 1-0.
This team was a great one and it deserved more than it achieved.

In the 1997 tournoi de France competition, the game this 3-3 draw took place, we finished bottom of the group, losing to England 2-0, drawing with Brazil 3-3, and picking up a very lucky 1-1 against France.
I maintain that were not a good side. Cesare Maldini saw to that with his selections and extremely defensive set up. Whatever good we achieved was down to individual excellence rather than good team play. Another problem was that the midfielders that I mentioned were good, not great. Albertini, Dino Baggio and Di Biagio were nowhere near as good as the likes of De Rossi, Pirlo, Verratti etc, and could not boss a game.
As for France 98, we were not unlucky. We were terrible against France. Maldini insisted on starting an extremely out of form Del Piero ahead of Baggio who was in great form and far better physical shape that he was in 1994. France bossed the game thanks to Maldini starting the game with Dino Baggio, Di Biagio and Gianluca Pessotto starting in central midfield - Pessotto was used to man mark Zidane. We only started to play once Baggio came on the pitch. Had Baggio started that match it could have been a different story.

Then I disagree with you about Cesare Maldini, if I compare how Italy played in 1994 with Sacchi (despite being 2nd overall) and in 2002 with Trapattoni (totally disappointing) the team of Maldini played a good and sometimes spectacular football. Roberto Baggio played in every game and he had his chances with France, but he missed by bad luck, and that's not fault of Cesare Maldini. With the same team just 2 years later Dino Zoff almost won the Euro championship.
That was a very valuable team that achieved less than it deserved.
How did we blow leads of 2-0 & 3-1? Unbelievable. Brazil's been the bane of my existence for many years. For the exception of that magical '82 WC victory for the ages, they are the incarnation of Rasputin-hard to kill when you have your foot on their throats. With that being said, they have, & always had, world class athletes & deserve respect & recognition.

Im portuguese but i would definitly say that germany is ahead of italy. Same number of world cups, three euro cups and more finals than the azzurra. This match highlights what a huge mistake it was to not take Romario to France 98.
Romario was injured so he was not selected for the 1998 World Cup.
Wrong he was fit by June, Zagallo still picked Edmundo instead.
As a supporter of Flamengo, the club of Romario back then for which he even played a friendly match during the group stage of the WC, I've always mentioned how this cost Brazil the 1998 World Cup. Specially if indeed Ronaldo had a nervous caused (and not french "cuisine" induced) convulsion on the day of the Final...

I don’t think Italy has beaten Brazil after that fateful day (Italian supporters exception) in 1982. That match was over 40 years ago but it is still not forgotten by ANY football fan who was old enough to remember! And from the results thereafter, I don’t think any Brazilian has forgotten either!!

Also a diver for the penalty here.
Two problems with that- one, it doesn't look like a dive. The defender puts his hands on the attacker, and appears to push into him and start to cut across the legs of the Italian; that is a foul. Aside from techincal definitions, he is slightly putting the attacker off balance with the hands and body pressure, and starting to trip him. The contact was fairly light, but then it doesn't need to be very heavy to push someone off balance when they are running, and that's a foul (unless it is a shoulder barge, shoulder-to-shoulder contact). Secondly, the attacker in question was Inzaghi, not Del Piero.
Whoever it was it was an obvious dive. Saying otherwise is like saying that the ocean isn't really all that wet. It's nonsensical exhalation of air pretending to be sentient communication. I know what a dive looks like and that was a dive.
@ Fishslap 33 It may be a dive, but shortly before that, there was a foul and the referee did not give the penalty... so this time he felt, he had to give it.
