    Botanicare fails to note, the Cal-Mag + should be added first. The instructions on Dutch Master Grow Chart and General Hydroponics CaliMag both mention this. Additives first, then Micro, then Green and Red. Adjust Ph.

      I read that cal-mag may not be necessary in hard water areas.

    No need to pH the water before adding nutes. In fact, it could make your pH too low, as the 3 part has stabilizers in them that bring most tap water down into the proper hydro range. 3 part first, then adjust pH if needed. You're using lemon juice, but if you were to add pH down or up, you should mix it into a smaller amount of water first then add to res, rather than right into the reservoir.
    And GH does recommend adding the 3 part in the M - G - B order, to prevent lockout.

    Make sure micro goes first the grow then bloom, cal mag comes before everything else. You should buy a chlorine tester one hour is not enough to remove chlorine

    Did he mix the grow in the water first? That will lock out the other nutes? You are supposed to mix in the micro first , the grow second , and then the bloom? He is mixing the Cal mag last? That should have been done first and if he put a silica supplement that should be be for cal mag.. Let's get that straight. #1 Silica#2 cal mag #3 micro GH #4 grow GH #5 bloom GHand last rapid start. Some body correct me if I'm wrong? I'm just saying would not want to confuse the new guys. It's gonna be where I had to say something.

    ProTip: Goto Amazon and purchase 100 disposable 5 ml syringes for $12. The black ink dashes and numbers rub off super fast. So place a piece of clear packing tape over ink and they are good for weeks.

  • @TheGrowGeek

    good point. I got them cheap so it was much fast or me to use with out having to washout a measuring cup every time I need to add another. the point is not to cross contaminate the nutrients. if you dip the same syringes in each of your bottles then you are going mix your nutrients together and ruin your bottles. my way I only dip in the nutrient bottle once. get the exact amount with out having eyeball it, mix them in the bucket and then clean the syringe at the end with all my other equipment.

    According to Dutch Master, ppm readings are not accurate when additives are included after main nutrients. I believe this also means some nutrients are reacting prematurely.

    Great video, I am just about to get started on Hydroponics and are trying to learn how it works so this question might just be too obvious to some: What do you do when moving to a new week in the chart that has a different mix of nutrients? You kind of worked around this by using the week 3 mix for all your growing weeks, which seem like a great idea. But what if you grow tomatoes for example that would need more weeks or if you really wanted to follow the chart as it is? So when you get to a week with a different mix do you flush the system or do you just apply the new mix to the water you add to the system during that week?

    Hey TheGrowGeek , I am getting a 4, 5 gallon bucket system with a 5 gallon reservoir. My question is, how do I manage the nutrient solution? Do I mix up the nutrients for the total amount of water in the system (4x5G+5G = 25 Gallon Approx)? It's a top fed recirculating system so I need the water level in each bucket to at least touch the roots of the plants (around 3G per bucket).

    Does this work for all different plant types? We want to grow various vegetables indoors and we want to do it hydroponically. What about lighting? I'm still trying to get the seeds to germinate now. Once the seeds have germinated and are in the rock-wool, do I set the rock-wool in a bucket and let the nutrient water barely touch it? Is it okay if the rock-wool is continuously partially submerged in the water? I'm a beginner lol. Obviously.

    Great video! Suggestion. SHAKE THE HELL out of those nutrients before you pour from them or pull from them with a syringe. ALWAYS check the bottle, no matter what you're working with to see if the mfg recommends shaking first. This goes for MANY bottled products, not just ferts. For example, if you always just pour straight out of your steak sauce bottle, you're never gonna actually get the correct mix of the ingredients, and as you near the bottom of the steak sauce container, it will start to taste much differently. And I think we ALL know why you must shake the ketchup bottle before attempting to pour from it! lol

    I've really enjoyed these series but have a question or two. First I don't see anything in the channel on once you're done with the seedlings and need to put them into netpots and in a tote with a solution. Could you discuss at what point you would do this in the growing process and since you use your nutrient solutions on various weeks how is that done. Is that in a tote or what?

      @TheGrowGeek  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      GorillionDollars Ive grown bell peppers successfully using the system on the box minus the first week because you don't need it in my experiments. so I guess cucumbers will be the same, the yellowing could mean you should increase the cal mag and adding extra Epson salts has never done anything bad to my plants just made them greener. I had a problem with yellow crinkly leaves and it was a calcium deficiency so I increased the cal mag and Epson salts and that cleared it right up

    Hydroponics is a good system but it also have some disadvantage, you must buy some "plant food", nutrition and supplements which may be high-priced. Before making any hydroponics system, you must think about the advantage of aquaponics system, which can automate 95% of work.

    • @TheGrowGeek
      @TheGrowGeek  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a home made IBC system that im working with. they both have advantages and disadvantage the hydroponic system works well indoors and with very little maintenance once setup. I buy in bulk and over the last 2 years I have consistently produced 40 to 60 heads of salad greens, peppers and herbs for pennies and head. the aquaponic system takes a lot more of my time to maintain and is very sensitive to change. but the operating costs a better and when they reach maturity the fish will be great too. I have a lot of projects and the time saving of hydroponics systems are a better option for me personalty but I have great success with both

    Just a quick pointer on the Hydrogen peroxide. 3ml a gal is the correct rate but your conversion into tsp is going to get people in trouble.
    1tsp = 4.9ml ..... 2.5tsp (4.9 x 2.5) =12.25ml per gallon is a bit excessive. Now however I know people that run 8ml of the un-concentrated hydrogen peroxide

    • @TheGrowGeek

      thanks for the feedback...I understand a lot of people are do not like the use of Hydrogen Peroxide in their systems but I have used a lot higher than this in the past and have no problems. I also have friends how use Hydrogen Peroxide directly as part of the weekly maintenance of the system to keep the algae at bay. I found this mix works well for me for cleaning my buckets with no ill affects to my plants or system. I leave it up to the individual to do the research on whether or not they want to use Hydrogen Peroxide has part of there cleaning / feeding regiment
      ....also I use retail Hydrogen Peroxide (3%) and not food grade (30%)

      I'm fairly new at this and after losing my first batch of strawberries this year to some fungus I introduced using 4 day old rainwater (yes learnt a lesson there), I super cleaned my system, got more strawberries, started it all up again, the plants seemed to start failing again around the 2nd day, the edges turned brown and the were dying again, I think they were having trouble with uptake, so I dumped a bottle of peroxide in my 25 gallon can and now things seemed to have stopped dying. I then added a tablespoon or so of powdered rooting hormone, the kind you dip your plant starts in for dirt growing. Now two days later there is huge, golf ball sized opaque globules, big, covering the roots, so big I really can't see the roots, but the plants that have the biggest 'globbs' are actually doing rather well!! I have no idea what has happened, my pH is ok though, the water smells ok, I use a good nutrient solution, are the globbes the rooting hormone mixed with the peroxide?????

    The drawback to hydroponics is you have to pay for "plant food" or nutrients and supplements which can be pricey.

      Actually it cheaper than growing in the ground. you still need to feed those plants plus most of that food is wasted. then there is the insects to contented with, bad weather conditions, too hot, too cold, hydroponics if faster, cheaper and you get more consistent results than rolling the dice with growing out doors
