Price was one of those guys who thought he could "coast" at the wrong times of his career. It was at those points that he needed to step up his training and commitment....but again, he would coast. He didn't have the kind of talent that could allow him to coast against anyone. Another very good video Rich....Like I said before, every time you post a new one its the next thing I do...watch it!! Cuevas was lucky to lose to Price, for this is the reason he got a title shot. Champ Angel Espada was looking for an easy fight, and it backfired on him.
Rich, you keep digging up these epic slugfests to such a degree I've given up on watching the present mediocrity, and prefer wallowing in nostalgia !! Looking forward to the next one!!

I was a huge fan of Sugar Ray Leonard and saw that fight where Price got battered in one. 16 unanswered shots..... And some fans had the big sign in the crowd "Andy Hawk Price - Uncrowned Champ". After the KO my brother yelled at the TV "Where's the sign now?". Dave "Boy" Green also got flattened by Ray Leonard in a title fight by a vicious, one punch KO where he was out for a while. Parkinson's no doubt caused by boxing, we've seen it before. Shame about his son too. Great job again Rich. 🥊

On Price, hate to say it especially with his successful career, but my clearest memory of Andy is getting caught on the ropes by Ray and getting taking out by one of Ray’s most beautiful ko combos. Andy was a good quality fighter.
Price started his career as a lightweight, and I asked my dad how Lightweight Champ Mando Ramos would have fared against Andy? Dad replied, Mando Ramos had too much class for Andy. Boy! Ramos must have been great.
Great as always Rich.Loved thar Hawk-Pipino footage. People forget because of the Hearns ko and to a lesser degree the Duran ko Pipino was at one time considered to have an iron jaw.And if you look at the Hitman slaughter it actually took quite a few clean rights to finish the job. Btw Rich ,did you know that Cuevas's camp only had the leather soled boxing shoes and there was no rosin at the fight ? Not saying that's why Cuevas lost but he had no chance at all slipping and sliding. But that's on his camp. And it took a couple of more losses here in the Usa before Mexican fighters switched to rubber soles.
Thanks, Antonio. I didn't know that about Cuevas' shoes, no.You're certainly right about Cuevas' rep of having an iron chin before the fight with Hearns...
Great video. All I knew about Price was that Leonard fight whoch was my introduction to boxing and what made me a fan. He appeared to be quite the talent when he was on his game.
Excellent Doc Rick. Really enjoyed the footage of the Cuevas fight, although the rounds I watched appeared to be the ones that Cuevas won. I actually witnessed the match with SRL in Las Vegas, which was only a month or so before SRL would stop Pete Ranzany in five rounds. I made a wager that SRL would stop Price within five rounds, but like all amateur bettors, I had my doubts going into the match. That first round KO startled me. There was this notion that SRL had reached a new plateau with the ease he dispensed of Andy Price. Later we would discover that SRL, Duran, Benitez signaled a changing of the guards. Out with the current crop and in with the new. Those guys would plow through the old guard and leave stiff bodies in their wake. The ease with which SRL dismantled the same Davy Boy Green that Price struggled with, really show the gap between two eras. I had a lot of admiration for that old guard of boxers. The Cuevas, Palomino's, Armando Muniz, Harold Weston, Randy Shields, Pete Ranzany etc... Yet this new crop was special and remains so - IMO. Thanks much for the footage Rick!
Yup the Cuevas fight was impressive at one point Pipino had him on the ropes and was blasting away he withstood that without folding that was a good win but when Leonard had him on the ropes it was duck season on him
Price always had terrible timing throughout his career. Losing after a major win, then facing a red hot Sugar Ray Leonard in 1979 and getting blasted inside of 1 round. His wins over Palomino and Cuevas could have gone either way, so they weren't convincing wins, which was probably the reasoning of him getting snuffed when a title fight opportunity arose. Carlos Palomino had the backing of Don Chargin & Aileen Eaton, the two most prominent figures in the Southern California boxing scene throughout the 60s & 70s, which led to his shot at John Stracey WBC welterweight belt in 1976. Cuevas, based on an 8 fight win streak before the close decision loss to Price, had already secured the shot at Espada's WBA title, hence the brief 6 week period between the Price loss and the victory over Espada. Price had talent, but his lack of a big punch and streaky win/loss performances doused any true hopes of securing a world title shot.
The older brother of Albert "Superfly" and Bantamweight Champ Richie Sandoval, Named Joe Sandoval beat Andy in the pre=pro ranks. Richie told me Joe was the best fighter of the 3 of them , but 3 years in Jail took his best years from him. Joe won both his only 2 pro fights.

This is another of those anomalies in boxing where things don’t seem to add up. A particular fighter beats the top contenders, but somehow gets overlooked for a championship opportunity. Curious how he beats Cuevas and Palomino, and both receive title fights within a year and become champions. Price got SRL on national television. But no title opportunity
My dad started his pre pro career as a middleweight and finished as a pro middleweight. Retired 31-0. He wished he had dropped down to welterweight, but 2 things prevented that; BEANS and TORTILLAS.
Good job Rich. Price beat both Palomino and Cuevas in his time, but he got blasted out by the legendary Sugar Ray Leonard. Price was one of the best welterweights in the 1970s, but had he faced Thomas "Hitman" Hearns, "The Hands of Stone" Roberto Duran and "El Radar" Wilfred Benitez, Price would have feel the wrath of the Hitman and Duran would have hurt Price badly and Benitez would counter Price all night. Well obviously I'm sort of kidding, because I actually know why he thought he could get away with it against Leonard. It worked well against Cuevas, so he obviously figured he'd be fine doing it against Leonard. Price obviously underestimated Leonard's ability to be extremely accurate and devastatingly deadly against boxers trying to rope a dope him. Sugar Ray Leonard was basically a combination of Sugar Ray Robinson, Kid Gavilan, and Joe Louis. If Andy Price had just stayed away from the ropes, then he would've lasted at least 4 rounds I think. He Really Obviously wasn't the same fighter Anymore though, by 1979, that he had been, in 1976, which was a few years before taking on Leonard in 1979. His bouts against Cuevas, Palomino, and a prime Davey Boy Green, apparently had an accumulative effect. Davey Boy Green made it to the 4th round against Leonard because he stayed away from the ropes. He was basically washed up by then himself. Had been knocked out by Palomino and then Jorgen Hanson, prior to taking on Leonard. So yeah, in conclusion, Prime Price, Prime Green, both would've gone at least 8 rounds against Leonard, at least in my own speculative opinion.
