In the 1990's I worked as a hostess at a very busy upper class restaurant. Natalie Merchant came in as a walk in ( no reservations). The only table I had open was one of the worst tables in the house. The one right next to the in door to the kitchen with waiters, food runners , and bus boys constantly going in. I felt like crap seating her there because I Love Her! She sat at that shitty table and thanked me. She enjoyed her dinner with her friend and seemed to have an awesome time. I stood at the hostess desk glancing at her every now and then thinking she would come up and ask to b moved but she never did. On her way out she thanked me again, I Loved Her Even More.😍
In a parallel universe, I'd like to think that Stipes and Merchant wed and produce an offspring of super gifted magical musicians that rule over the planet for eternity.
I'm having a Natalie Merchant (new album) and remember this performance. I completely teared up watching it. It still packs a beautiful punch 30 years later.
This is one of my favourite cover songs by Michael and Natalie. I have had the opportunity years ago of meeting them both in person. Hearing this is nostalgic and always makes me well up with tears to hear this song...lol... coming from a 44 year old guy! Absolutely beautiful.
To whomever said Natalie Merchant is average looking at best... seriously, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and Natalie Merchant is Wonderfully Beautiful!!!!
I can't believe this was almost 25 years ago! I remember watching live and squealing like a school girl when Michael stepped out on stage. Two of my favorite artists!
This Italian Goddess and Mr. Stipe have created a classic video for the young and the people that saw the original in black and white. From crayons to perfume!!!!!!
Their voices separately make my soul feel a sort of homecoming. Both together, I am nearly brought to tears. Endless love to the both of them for sharing their art with the world.
+Eldon Stracke II Yes they do. I know she is still in music doing her own thing after giving up on those that tried to drive her to do things she didn't want to do. Not sure about Michael Stripe any more lost track of him about 10 or so years ago. I just love her voice and his isn't bad. I miss the old school REM
I got hooked by this song when I listened Lulu singing... But, Natalie and Michael gave a fresh tune for it... And, both singing... I really got speechless!! 🎶🎶🎵🎵💕💕💕💋💋
Came across the audio version of the song some time ago and have played it loads of times but seeing the performance of Natalie and Michael on You Tube has enhanced this and made it one of my favourites.
Love this version of Lulu's To Sir With Love. I loved the movie and the song and heard this version for the first time today on WXPN out of Philadelphia. They kind of did a block of the end of the world theme today.
In case anyone is interested, this is from one of the Clinton Inauguration Balls in Jan. 1993. I remember it fondly, as it seemed the dawn of a new day after 12 years of Reagan/Bush.
I am reading Clinton's book. He didn't mention Natalie and the 10000 maniacs in his book. Where was he? One of the best voices God put on this planet ! Michael Stipe is excellent too! However, Natalie is the total package! Natalie's new CD is fantastic!
WOW!!! Thanks so much for uploading this gem! I've watched three times already!! Natalie and especially Michael really put their heart and soul in this classic song!!
Incredible !!!-- awesome !!! thanks for posting this! along with CANDY EVERYBODY WANTS - two of the best videos on youtube !!!!!!! the joy, the innocence... makes me wish we had a time machine so we could go to back to those sunny, optimistic, and exuberant early years of the Clinton presidency...
I remember watching this live when I was 23 - Merchant and Stipe would not have played for just anyone, and this song speaks volumes. We were so sure things were really going to change - and they did. And then they regressed. Here's hoping Hillary can save us. (and I made a political comment because that's what this event was all about. Context is important, if not essential.)
***** I can agree to that. I think part of my recollection of things changing is due to my youth at the time, and how horrible the next decade was in comparison. Ah, gilded memories....
+SueSnellLives! Thank you, you are so right. This is the.smartest and most insightful comment on here. I remember watching this when I was a bit older - 32 - I was so optimistic and excited for the future, and knew things would change for the better...and they certainly did. Hillary will save us. Thank you again for a great comment. And, this song does speak volumes - it doesn't get any better than this.
How grotesque that you worship an old rapist and the corrupt wife who enabled him. Thankfully the Clintons have been relegated to the dustbin of history. Take a moment to weep for all their victims.
cant answer that one , but her voice is timeless if you ever get the chance , see her live . don't you know you never try to put a time frame on a woman? lol
@vikingivor I remember watching this the night it aired. How exciting it was, both to have a new President, and also a President whose musical tastes reflected my own (a first at that time). He used a Fleetwood Mac song as his campaign theme song, named his daughter after a Judy Collins song, and had people like Michael Stipe and Natalie Merchant at his inauguration. (not to mention, he played a mean saxophone himself!) As someone who grool!ew up listening to rock and roll, that was very c
Pretty cheesy in parts, but I think Natalie does this song real justice. I remember hearing a version of this by them on the radio a good bit as a teenager, so I'll always like their rendition because it introduced me to this great song.
Lol! I agree, I'd be biased toward someone who helped me to make mega millions. But I do think Stipey is amazing. And yes, I do agree he can be nasal. Rob, I try to keep up with the current pop hits -- I love Power Pop mostly as a genre -- and I'm always ready to find more singers, because the singing is more important to me than the music. Can you advise me on 3-5 singers that I should check out? Thanks, bro!
Michael Stipe is a very good singer who sings great songs that he wrote who's personal connection to the song comes across very clearly which makes his singing that much more engaging; but in terms of pure skill-set he's pretty limited and really isn't in the same class as some of his contemporaries past and present; David Gahan, Robert Smith, Steve Perry, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Dickinson, Geoff Tate just to name a few.

Natalie is a beautiful woman and a beautiful soul.
Three years have passed and your story is still appreciated.
In a parallel universe, I'd like to think that Stipes and Merchant wed and produce an offspring of super gifted magical musicians that rule over the planet for eternity.

I'm 61 and I got goosebumps.....Awesome. ..Thank you Nat....
im 61 and i get goosebumps and tear up , so good.. always loved the song and this version is amazing
Natalie Merchant, the voice of an angel. With Michael, a fantastic version of the song.
That's unbelievable ! I've never seen this awesome duet before. Thanx TH-cam !
One of the most melodically and lyrically moving songs of the twentieth century...Songs, like, "To Sir With Love", will live on forever.
I can't believe this was almost 25 years ago! I remember watching live and squealing like a school girl when Michael stepped out on stage. Two of my favorite artists!

This is fantastic. Nice and loose. Stipe does a great job complimenting Natalie's phenomenal voice.
Real singers/songwriters doing real singing...FRESH!
When a cover is done right it is a thing of beauty!! This one is!!
This song gives me goose bumps....love them singing together!
I remember these two performing this at a celebration of Clinton's inaugural.
Probably the best version of this since the original. This took me back. Thanks for posting
I amso convinced... Natalie Merchant with or without the Maniacs can perform anything to perfection!
Ouvindo novamente em 2021! Alguém mais?
I love this song! Like the old version, but this one is so much better! Great Movie, awesome duo. You should work together more often!
I'd almost forgot how good Natalie Merchant was (is?) . Very distinctive, she sounds like no one else.
TWO OF THE MOST COMMANDING VOICES OF THE ERA...SIMPLY LOVE THIS ....
Natalie proves again and again her incredible talent. It stands the test of time. Major props to Michael as well!
That is excellent. "Hello in There". I love it.
These two together are magical. I didn't know this was for Clintons inauguration.
this is sooooooooooooooooo amazing
I got hooked by this song when I listened Lulu singing...
But, Natalie and Michael gave a fresh tune for it...
And, both singing...
I really got speechless!!

I saw REM and 10,000 Maniacs in the 1980's in shitty clubs and arenas. This is my favorite performance.
Came across the audio version of the song some time ago and have played it loads of times but seeing the performance of Natalie and Michael on You Tube has enhanced this and made it one of my favourites.
Oh my God I just Heard Natalie Merchant sing with Michael Stipe. What is left in life after this?
Love this version of Lulu's To Sir With Love. I loved the movie and the song and heard this version for the first time today on WXPN out of Philadelphia. They kind of did a block of the end of the world theme today.
I just stumbled upon this. Magnificent!!!

Love this! Have an audio version but so lovely to see it. Thanks for posting
Every time I hear this, I'm 14.

What a freaking great song. I looooooove Natalie!!!!
That's amazing. I ALWAYS thought Natalie and Barbara Hershey were strikingly similar. I never heard anyone else share that view. Too funny!
Yeah, that was fun. At least we got to see it for a while.
Natalie = Goddess. Michael's voice does help this version.
2 songs from this day were put on an EP called Few and Far Between.

One of my fav songs (this version)
A música já era ótima. Cresceu ainda mais com a interpretação dos dois...
Pete Buck once told an interviewer that he believes Michael Stipe is the greatest white male vocalist alive today. I agree.
Lol! I agree, I'd be biased toward someone who helped me to make mega millions. But I do think Stipey is amazing. And yes, I do agree he can be nasal.

George Michael/Kenny Loggins/Daryl Hall----but Stipe is top 20.
Jeffrey Schwartz Those were some impressive logical contortions you just put on display there.
He's number 1 by a country mile
WOW!
