- This is my landscape photography daily vlog number 5. I am travelling to Spain for a commission and I will be documenting the entire journey as I travel around Andalucia in search of beautiful landscapes to photograph. Today I try to rescue by favourite image so far, which is soft. I then continue on to photograph more beautiful locations in Andalucia. Sponsored by the Consejería de Turismo, Cultura y Deporte de Andalucía. Co-financed with European funds.

I hope your view count and engagement numbers are proving what I have always believed: As great as your photography is, YOU are the star of this channel. I really hope we get to see more like this (or perhaps a hybrid of your usual content and vlog-style) in the future. Keep up the good work, Thomas!

I applaud your honesty on how this project is going for you. You're a great photographer doing the best you can with what has been thrown your way. Stressful? I'm sure,. Rewarding? I hope so, only you can tell. Informative for all of us watching? Absolutely. Well done, Thomas.
I have never seen you so stressed out. Take care Thomas. This is not the world photography competition, it’s a tourist project. Enjoy it!
"Half the images are behind you" is GREAT advice (and quite profound). Thanks for these amazing videos!!
Feel really sorry for you, the pressure to produce something and not knowing the area. You are doing well and showing us the warts and all side is great story telling. Great to watch. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Loving these vlog. Behind the scenes is something most landscape TH-camrs don’t show. Very refreshing and informative. Hope to see more in the future.
I'm a hobbyist photographer and filmmaker, and the Topaz suite has helped elevate some of my work. I see it as a tool, just like the rest of the gear, and it has a time and a place. I am loving this adventure and the behind-the-scenes of a commercial job and vlog you are doing. Well done.
I do have a sense of appreciation that it's not always easy for a professional like yourself to find the shot and when you do, they aren't always perfect. I need sense of motivation is in my view. Thank you.
I bit the bullet and upgraded to PhotoAI during their black Friday thing. I use it a LOT for wildlife photography. My kit doesn't lend itself to super low-light, so a lot of my images are noisy. PhotoAI does an AMAZING job cleaning them up. Very, very cool to see what it does w landscape images.
One of the things I love about landscape photography and watching you do landscape photography is that the journey/hike is half(or more) of the fun of it. Thanks again for taking us along! Have a great day.
No doubt it’s a lot of hard work but I’ve been enjoying your “vlog” posts, Thank you!
Now that was a daily vlog pal! Raw, honest and highly engaging ! Fair play for the superb juggling too 👏👏
Was interested to see todays video after you discussed this in your newsletter Thomas as crowds is definitely not your thing after watching you all these years. Glad you got your image salvaged from the day before too as this was a lovely composition
Been using the Topaz suite for about six months now am loving the amount of bad shots I’ve recovered. Broke my right wrist about 2 years ago so my handheld shots aren’t the sharpest but the AI Sharpen has been able to correct the softer ones.
TH I'm loving this format. I know it's not sustainable nor arguably desirable in the long term but if your on a gig like this, it's really working for me. X
Phew! Can't wait for tomorrow's video! Very glad that Topaz saved that image. AI sharpening is quite amazing now in some situations.
Can’t wait for tomorrow, bet your learning more than you realise doing this. Channeling your inner Casy Niestat on the daily’s, great job.
loving this daily vlogs, good luck with the production day Tom from the next video
This looks like hard work and lots of stress! Weather doesn’t always cooperate.
Enjoying the series, keep them coming.
I got onto Topaz several years back and have keep updating, so yes, it is a marvelous programme. Well done for giving it a go! (That image was lovely too)
We're enjoying the vlog. Thanks Thomas
Talking to camera in a crowd! Well done Tom we're proud of you.
I love these daily vlogs as well as the weekly productions ... the best thing about Thomas is the honesty, the "what's on the lung is on the tongue" aspect of his comments ... not seeing that with other photography sites, keep it up and thanks
I like this vlog format. It is more interactive, provides more BTS, and shows your thought process even more than your traditional videos. Would love to see this style applied to more future video, doesn't have to be daily, but vlog style can work well when well done.
I dont comment often but man I really like your daily vlog Thomas. We can see another side of the creation of an image, if I can say so. Something to do again for me. And thanks for your work.
I shall so miss these vlogs!!!
I’m enjoying this series of videos. . I'm sure it must really add to the work load. Thanks for doing this for us.
I enjoy this format more than your other style
I have Topaz Photo AI. I've found it does a fair bit of sharpening even when I've only set it for denoise. And I usually only set the denoise to minimum. It's really powerful!
I'm with you on the crowds thing: I struggle with them too.
Fella! These have been epic, well done. You need to do this on your next trip. Thank you for the time and effort, I know you’re out of your comfort zone, but you’re smashing it 😊
Topaz is amazing! I screwed up my settings bad once when I was being a dad taking snapshots of my daughter with her favorite TH-camr Chandler, from Chandler's Wild Life, and not a photographer. I cranked my ISO without even paying attention and everything was absurdly grainy. I decided to give the noise reduction a try, was blown away, and paid for the entire suite. It has since saved me on a couple real estate shoots where it looked good in camera, but focus was just a touch off once I got it into Lightroom. Now it can go way too far sometimes, but man does it fix some blunders!
I love photography, but the pressure of 4 images a day and a documentation in an area that I am not familiar with would kill the joy for me. My respect for doing it anyway.
I really liked that reservoir shot!
This is such a fantastic project and series. Something new for the channel and I for one have loved it so far. Thank you
Come on Thomas, the force(all these years you talked to us that the force is the perseverance) will be with you and you will find the way like always to take the better image on the better timing…💪🏻
Topaz Smart Sharpen has saved multiple birds in flight photos for me. It’s worth a purchase!
Topaz De-Noise is also amazing!
You're at least pulling it all together. We believe in you. Thanks for being an inspiration for "Just get the F&^% out there with the camera, and take some photos." You always seem to get something! Cheers
Thumbnails have looked good mate don’t worry.
Great video again mate, shows these journeys have ups and downs.
This is wonderful stuff. Thanks for sharing it and taking us along.
Tom, absolutely great videos as always! Re: the issue of tripod-mounted but 'shaky' conditions, have you ever considered carrying 1-2 bungee cords and a tent stake? You could place your camera bag under the tripod and tighten a cord to the tripod bottom hook. OR, where you are on dirt, you could plant the stake under the tripod and then attach the cord to it.
Your negative video intros got my attention, but we like the positive ones too!
🕊
Welcome to the club. I've got lots of smaller company software and each of them have their particular uses. Topaz, DxO, Nik, Nikon NX etc.. Topaz, especially the individual apps, can save a day and has controls of the settings. Motion blur, lens blur can all be improved to a degree, just watch artifacts and dial down as necessary. For high ISO, noisy raw files I find DXO the best starting place. People often complain about buying software but, compared to the price of our camera gear, it's tiny and can save the day...
I'm looking forward to the next one -- your film crew predicament sounds a right pain. Excellent viewing
I have been using Topaz Sharpen AI for about a year now and it is unbelievable. It works wonders, especially with old scanned negatives. It is also great with digital B&W images. Of course it also works with digital color images, but can make them a bit crunchy, unless they are horribly unsharp to begin with. All the best.
A Heaton saga every day for a week......brilliant entertainment for us, although I suspect not so much much for yourself?
Loving these vlogs Thomas, thanks for taking us along for the ride.
Looking forward for the Junta campaign! Been there, done that in almost every location.
I've been loving this series. I've actually been looking through every photographer's videos. I'm so glad that you went through at a little slower pace than everyone else. I kept on wanting more with everyone else's videos. Also I actually love that you used all the resources available to you and tried to pronounce the names of the locations. They have all been really close, if not spot on. Many others never even tried, even though they had drivers as well.
I really felt for you in this video with the amount of people on the river walk.
The stress you must have been going through with all those people around, i can only imagine.
The amount of image's that you could have taken were endless on the walk.
Thank goodness for Topaz to get you out of a bad situation.
Look forward to the next one.
Ha! Glad I could save your arse and to see you took my advice about Topaz!
Yw! 🙏🏽
As a videographer, I appreciate when the client doesn't require us to hike for many hours with 60+ kg's of gear. But you do what you have to do. I shoot stills for myself on the weekend. Wildlife and rocket launches. I have started initial processing of my images (I shoot with the Canon R5) in their software before I go into Lightroom. Their software seems to handle initial editing better. Their proprietary color science seems to do a better job. I am also a fan of Topaz AI. It is remarkable at sharpening and denoising. I appreciate your hard work and enjoy your channel. Cheers:)
This series of Vlogs is great! Just like being there. I wonder, how a black mist filter would help with an flat milky sky? Should it not make it even milkier and less contrasty?
01:33 Great bit of image *shaping* there Tom ;)
I appreciate all the effort you take to make everything happen. Can't wait to see another episode of this trip!
Very exciting this roadtrip!
Topaz is brilliant I purchased it last year and used it here and there wonderful. Amazed you haven't come across it before now.
Man, this series has been amazing! You should do more
You are trooper TH!
Oh hell ..... stress .... I won't sleep until I see if you survived the filming ..... Kind regards, Guy.
I have ave been using Topaz for years as a plugin for Paint shop Pro and Luminary.
I was once "counseled" by a nice Colorado State Trooper for stopping in a safe spot along a wide shoulder to snap a quick but wonderful shot of a draw with stunning fall colors. So now while driving I keep a "snapshot camera" (a camera setup so I can use it one handed) on the seat next to me to try to grab shots I see as driving and when I can't stop. It does not always work, but sometimes does.
Hi Thomas,
Tip for taking pictures with lots of people around and not having them into the frame is to stack ND filters and take 15 to 30 minutes long exposures, even an hour, then all you have to do is to guard the camera/tripod so that nobody bumps into it. Once I managed to take a pic of an empty San Marco square in Venice using this technique,
Does that really work well? I mean surely a person deciding to sit somewhere for 15 minutes will come up as a shadow on the photo or not?
@@alexven92 you are right, if someone is sitting or standing relatively still for the majority of the exposure it will show up in the picture, and also the difference between the brightness of the background and obstructing object ( people, vehicles etc.) plays a factor on how long a a details has to be in the frame before it actually chows up; someone dressed in black in front of a white wall can definitely stay in the frame a lot longer than someone dressed in white against a dark background. As an example of two extremes you could think of taking a picture of the Brookling Bridge, at rush hour it won't work, but one hour after sun rise in the summer it will and you would get the bridge totally empty.
It's so difficult editing on a laptop and especially while on the road doing something quick. The story worked and that's what counts!
Wow! Impressive all the work you do! Thank you to bring you with you. Impatient to see tomorrow vlog! I am sure you will impressed them
that was great for me to watch but for you..... Well done
Gav's new office is ACE - must be all those books he's sold..... Thanks for 2023 👍👍👍
12:24 you say not a good day but that’s a nice shot!
This video really shows some of the stress of working with clients and wanting to get the shots. You worked your butt off on this day.
Quite the challenge but I have no doubt your client will love your work! This has really been fun to watch! Thanks for taking me along!
I was in on the Beta of that Topaz software. I had images from years ago that were just that little bit too soft and it did an amazing job with them.
Would you, could you take that same landscape image and sharpen it in Lightroom using the new (relatively new) Enhance feature...I've had great success with it and don't own Topaz. Since you've used your trial version, a comparison of that same image with Lightroom's Enhance feature, along with YOUR opinion of the comparison would be very valuable. BTW, I am SO enjoying your daily Vlog of this project!
Honestly i like the footage of the gimbal camera more than your usual. It may not have quite the same image quality, but it's super stable! The warp stabilizer always threw me off.
Waiting for this like an addict!!!
I commented in IG & everything 😂😂😂😂
I'm excited for the documentary!! 😅
Can’t wait to see what tomorrow’s video brings !! You’re doing such a great work with the videos and your photographs !
I'd give the DXO PureRAW a try to - I've found it gives better results than the Topaz
5:50 Great Image the yellow really lifts it 12:21 Nice location just needs a bit of light If this is your worst day, it's been great! thanks for sharing
Welcome to the dark side :D Topas are amazing. Great Vlog, you should try this again.
I’m really enjoying this series and have been looking forward to each day… the suspense for tomorrow is real 😂
Thanks for another instalment into this fascinating story of the life of a professional photographer - great stuff!
Well now I've got to add spain to my bucket list!
Loving the dailies, Tom. It must be very challenging to navigate through all those people while searching for the perfect shooting location.
I have all the topaz products. I like photographing wildlife. I have found sharpen the least useful because it does very strange things with fur. Denoise, however, is pure gold. I have taken pictures at ludicrous ISO, and had them clean up like I had used ISO 100. Denoise has become a normal part of my workflow.
have you tried the new Lightroom AI Denoise ? since getting that I've not used my Topaz Denoise.
@@TomYnysMon I imagine it's a great suggestion but I use affinity and not Lightroom for post process.
Oh hell! Rather you than me with that dilemma lol 😂 done well considering the more built up scenery
Loving each and every day of this.
For those windy conditions, could you speed up your shutter instead to compensate (and bump your iso some)?
Please do more daily vlog series. I'm really enjoying this one.
this is my favourite channel of all time
Take the lens hood off in the wind. It helps. Also if it is really cold - take the lens hood off.
their new Photo software is cool, covers noise, sharpening and upscaling all in one package '')
Very much enjoying these daily vlogs Tom, thanks.
Finally, each video you release, I wonder how I can use what I learned from your “Lake District) shots, and use it here, in this completely different Spanish landscape.
In the last few days, you have shown me exactly that.
Just need to put it all into practice
Welcome to the world of imaging sharpening. Been using Topaz for over a year and yes I don't use it on every image - just those rare ones that need that little bit of adjustment. Glad you found your way to the future.
Really enjoying these daily vlogs. Hopefully it’s something you incorporate more regularly.
I love this série in Spain !
These are just brilliant and love it. 👍👏
As a wildlife/bird photographer I do not stress over acute sharpness or ISO noise nearly as much as i had to years ago thanks in large part to Topaz AI. Of course, I try to keep the noise low and the sharpness tack sharp out of the camera but many more photos are salvageable thanks to the new software.
Topaz Sharpen AI is the only supplemental program I use outside of PS. It has saved several good bird photos for me. I agree with your assessment of today's shoot. That big clump of bright orange grass in the middle foreground on the first shot is distracting. I would take another look at it with that clump toned down a bit and see if that allows the beautiful background to draw draw me in more. But you are the pro. And, like you said about the second shot, it is a pretty viewpoint shot but maybe just the type of thing they want for this PR program. Anyway, I have more confidence in you than anyone else participating. Good luck tomorrow. You are probably already on your way now since it is 10 p.m. here. Don't let those studio directors screw you over too badly. You are The Photographer and you are The Boss of what you do.
